Chapter 3

“Letting go means to come to the realization that some people are a part of your history, but not a part of your destiny.”

― Steve Maraboli

5:30 AM, Two months later.

That is what the clock read when Prerna heard the knock on the door. That was the signal that her husband was at her door, after his morning run, with an Accucheck in his hand to check her insulin levels. On her last doctor's appointment she had been diagnosed with gestational diabetes, which translated into her husband being an insufferable dictator. It was absolutely impossible to have an argument with her husband, Prerna had learned in last one month because you can not have an argument if one party refuses to argue back. Once the man makes up his mind, you can come up with any reason, make any argument, he will calmly listen to you as if he is holding on to your every word and in the end will stick to his decision.

She hated needles, infact, she was terrified of them which made absolutely no difference to the man. He paid no heed to her pleas, instead he was at her doorstep every morning with an Accucheck in his hand to inflict pain and drain blood. Agreed, that it was a little prick and just a drop of blood but that was not something anyone looked forward to first thing in the morning, unless of course you are Rishabh Bajaj, then you reslished it.

“Prerna,” she heard her husband call out as did not not open the door at his first knock, she got up to open the door before the man did something over the top in worry.

“Are you okay? What took you so long to open the door,” Rishabh asked as soon as the door opened. His wife simply turned on her heel and made her way to the bathroom, shutting the door on his face.

“I hate you,” She exclaimed from the bathroom.

This time, instead of pain to his heart, the remark brought a small smile of amusement to his face. “I know you do Mrs. Bajaj,”he said stuffing his hands in his pockets leaning with his back against the bathroom door, “After all, I am, what did you call me yesterday? Yes, A Bloodsucking Business Machine,” he replied their conversation from the previous morning.

“That is not what I hate you for today. I have made my peace with your neanderthal ways. You will poke me with that needle even though I eat every horrible thing you put on that diet chart of yours.” Prerna replied from the bathroom.

“Prevention is better than cure Mrs. Bajaj,” he simply answered, “ So, if not for the needles why do you hate me today?” He asked amused.

“You are not human, you know that right?,” Prerna retorted, “Because you are already ready to go in one of your master of universe suits at 5:30 in the morning, not human at all. It makes normal people like me useless,” replied Prerna with irritated disgust evident in her tone.

“Correction Mrs Bajaj, I was ready at 3:30 AM as I had a meeting scheduled at 4 am with the Japanese. I just wrapped up that meeting before I came to see you,” he replied and moved aside from the door as he heard the door unlock.

“Please, stop talking,” Prena said as she whizzed past him to sit on the end of the bed.

“No morning sickness?” He enquired as he sat next to her and took out the Accu Chek.

“None at all, Don’t worry,” She reassured him, inspired she tested the waters, “I do not understand why I can not have any Fuchkas after I eat that god awful spinach salad.”

“That is not how it works Mrs. Bajaj, you have to eat healthy all the time,”he chided and taking her hand in his asked, “Ready? Remember it is just a little prick.”

“Just be quick,”Prerna said looking away and clutching the bedsheet as her husband pricked her finger to take the blood sample.

“All done.” He told her when he was done, “What did you eat yesterday Mrs Bajaj? You blood sugar level is up two points than normal.”he asked as he recorded her levels in the phone. When he did not get any answer from his wife, “Next time Rajan sneaks you junk from Chakraborty’s Chaat House, he can do it after packing his bags,”he declared coldly and made his way to the door pocketing his phone.

“You are overreacting Mr. Bajaj,” Prerna called from behind, “A lot of women have gestational diabetes and still have a natural birth ” her husband turned and she could not form another word. Fear and anger. His eyes were full of it, emotions so strong that it pierced her soul.

He was next to her in two steps, gripping her arms in anger, “I lost my mother when she had Ruhi, I lost my Ruhi, my baby, when she had Sneha. I am not going to lose another woman who is important to me to this curse you women call a blessing. After nine months, you all leave me.” He roared, his fingers digging into her arms, “But this time, I will win Prerna, I will not let you leave me and Sneha. I may not be the biological father Prerna, this child is as much mine as yours. So don’t you tell me about other women. I am not married to other women, so I don’t give two hoots about them. You are my wife and you are not leaving me alone.”

His words thundering in the Mansion he left without breakfast and goodbyes, first time since he got married.

All his meetings were finished for the day but Rishabh Bajaj did not want to go home. He had walked into the office with a thunderous mood which both Mehra and Rosaline, his personal assistant picked up instantly. He had snapped at minor issues, he almost fired Rosaline and he fired Mehra thrice. Both of them had managed his wrath so that it did not get passed onto other staff who were made of lesser material. He had skipped all meals and had been running on coffee all day. He had crossed a limit today with Prerena and in a fit of anger and fear had shared something with Prerna that he had no intention of ever telling her. Resting his head on the chair he ringed for Mehra. Eyes closed he smiled for the first time in the day when there was a knock on the door, announcing Mehra’s arrival. Mehra simply entered right after.

“I fired you three times today,” He said as Mehra made himself comfortable on one of the visitor chairs.

“Yes, you did, but there have been days when you have fired me at least ten times a day,”He had two whiskey glasses in his hand, one of which he slid towards him from the other side of the table. “Take a sip.” Mehra said with a smirk on his face, “You look like you need it. Welcome to married life, my friend.”

“How long has it been?” Rishabh asked.

“Seventeen years, you were eighteen,”Mehra replied

“You were young then Mehra, 30 years old, Junior Partner at the law firm I walked into seeking legal advice. You left that position to join me in my startup. What made you do that?”Rishabh asked.

“There was a storm in your eyes yet your demeanor was calm so that eight years old Ruhi does not pick up on it. I felt that storm needed to be shown direction so that it creates instead of destroying. You needed an anchor. You and Ruhi were mine the minute you walked into my office with a little girl in tow as I was yours. We were destined,” Mehra explained, “And you have made me quite a lot of money since then.” He said saluting his glass to Rishabh.

“You are not scared of me. Why?”Rishabh asked, “You should be, you have seen the worse I have done, a normal person would run at first chance.”

“The world has only seen Mr. Bajaj the Business Monster, I have seen Rishabh who used to wake up at 4 in the morning to sort his day, make breakfast for his sister, do her pigtails, drop her to school, and love her with every bit of his being.” Mehra replied, “Plus, I have the ultimate way to blackmail you,”Mehra laughed.

“Could you please burn that video tape?”Rishabh groaned.

“It’s my wedding video, no one will find my body after my wife is done chopping me into small little pieces. It's my leverage. Plus, now it's tradition to play that video on every diwali. I mean Rishabh Bajaj, dancing Shirtless on a tabletop. Priceless. You should be scared of me, not the other way around.” Mehra said.

“I was 21 and drunk,”Rishabh defended, taking a sip.

“You redefined young and wild in those days. Thank God, there was no social media back then. You kept my hands full as it is.”Mehra looked at the man sitting in front of him, whom he considered his younger brother, “She is made of steel,” he continued, “Your Prerna, you are putting the shadows of past on her, all it will do is eat your present. Believe in your choice.”

Of course, Mehra would understand without him saying anything, “She is Sneha’s choice, not mine.” Rishabh said a little too forcefully, more to convince himself than Mehra. “But she is knocking on doors that I had shut a long time back, Mehra and there is nothing but darkness there. And now she matters. I don’t think I have it in me to go through that pain a third time. This time my daughter will suffer as well. I will do anything to spare my daughter that pain.”Rishabh finally said feelings out loud.

Before Mehra could continue, there was a knock on the door and then Rosaline simply entered his office a coffee mug in hand , “You were an ass all day today!” She exclaimed as she made herself comfortable on the other visitor chair in his office.

“She matters,” Mehra told Rosaline as she sat next to him.

“Really, that is what you picked up from that enrite triade of mine.” Rishabh exclaimed at Mehra, “I am sorry Rosa, Today just started on a bad note,” he apologised to his PA. “How long has it been that all three out sat with drinks after work?” He asked. These two were more his family than employees. Rosaline, five years older than him was in her forties now. He was 22 and in desperate need of an assistant who understood the needs of a dylesxic boss. Rosa was 27, who had just lost her husband to Cancer was in desperate need of a job. She had a 3 year old and two sets of parents to take care of. Their needs became an opportunity for both of them. He was willing to pay and she was willing to learn. Her hardships had made her very attuned to human emotions. She handled his young, hyper-focused yet unorganised self very well. She showed him that his dyslexia was a gift instead of a curse. He really did not know what would have become of him if they had not found each other.

“Thank the Gods! She matters,” Rosaline held her mug high to salute the sky totally ignoring Rishabh’s question. “I don’t have to field women away from him anymore, she can take over that job as well. I have to extend my sincere thanks to her for taking over your file system. My son really appreciates the extra time his mother now has for him the day now that I do not have to make audio files for you.”

Rishabh smiled at that memory. Rajan had forgotten to put his ipad on charging that night and in the morning he could not listen to his schedule. It was one of those rare moments where he lost control and went into a bit of anxious state, his emotions heightened due to a mis-step in his routine. He was yelling at Rajan for not being diligent enough when Prerna had walked into his room. She simply told Rajan to leave. She took his face her tiny hands, told him to close his eyes and take a deep breath. It was a simple gesture, but it had calmed him. She had then simply called Rosaline asking to send her his schedule and read it for him at breakfast. That simple gesture of quiet understanding had undone him. From that day onwards, Rosaline sent his schedule and all the files that needed to be turned into audio files. He now looked forward to the time to listen to those audio files, her voice surrounding him with comfort and breaking down on the doors of his heart. The laughter of his friends brought him back from his thoughts.

“What is so funny?” He asked again.

“The mighty seems to be falling and we were just enjoying the view,” Rosaline teased him.

“She is 10 years younger than me.” Rishabh pointed out.

“Yes, 25 to your 35. The outrage!” Mehra mocked, “You cradle robber.”

“She has seen much more than her age Rishabh.” Rosaline continued, “She is not your mother or Ruhi, do not put her in a glass box. I know, initially she was just Sneha’s mother to you, even though I did not agree with your methods, I understood your reasons. But something has changed in between you. She seemed to have steadied you. Let her thrive Rishabh, I promise you that you will blossom with her.”

“It's not that easy,” Rishabh began.

“Love rarely is easy,” Rosaline smiled at him.

“Love,” Rishabh choked on the word as the air went out of his lungs. He felt the blood drain out of his brain as the realization hit that Rosaline is right. Nothing good was going to come out of this.

Mehra laughed, “Congratulations my friend, you are falling for the mother of your child.”

“I have emailed you her apology gift, consider it.”Rosaline said. “Your Prerna is very intelligent.”

“She is not my Prerna,” He fought back but the words from this morning came back hauntingly. You are my wife and you are not leaving me alone.

“Go home and grovel my friend, that is the key to good marriage.” Mehra said. They then calling for his driver Rosaline left with Mehra.

A/N: Okay so I am finally done with this part. I know we have not covered much ground in this one but this was all my tired brain can manage. Lemme know if I shall continue. Do ignore the typos, i did not proof read it.
