I feel he was awake. He know that the event management company of Vya would not be that careless to put the decoration esp. the hanging in the centre to fall.. He could not trust the people of BB given how they are behaving now adding to that past that the Basus are not aware but RB clearly knows what they are capable off. He might have suspected Basus in all this that’s why he wanted to see what will happen when he remains unconscious
