Chapter 45

Sameer and Naina both woke up feeling fairly hungry the next morning, after their early dinner the night before. And so, they headed downstairs well before eight, Naina showered and ready for the day and Sameer still in his tracks.

The crowd enjoying breakfast at that relatively early hour of the morning was mostly elderly. Mr and Mrs Sharma who were seated at one of the tables, smiled at them. The younger couple stopped by the elder couple, to exchange some greetings and enquire how their trip was coming along.  Sharma uncle very enthusiastically insisted “Aare yahi baith jao humare sath!” As Sameer and Naina joined them, he winked “Bhai shaadi ke pai-tees saal baad… biwi se meethi baaaton ka quota bilkul khatam ho jata hai!” Sharma Aunty shook her head at him “Aap bhi na… aare yeh log abhi Honeymoon pe aaye hai, abhi se kyun dara rahi hai bechari ko? Naina, tum uncle ki baaton ko bilkul ignore karo, samjhi?” She then turned to Sameer and advised “Waise bhi tumhari generation ko thoda wife ke mamle mein jyada sensitive hona chahiye… humare zamaane ki baat alag thi… humne toh jaise-taise gaadi kheech hi li! Iska matlab yeh nahi ke tum bhi wahi galtiyan karo jo humare husbands ne ki hai…”

Sameer just nodded and smiled, indulging the older lady. Some discussion took place regarding the tourist attractions in and around Mt Abu and what they had seen so far. Sharma uncle chuckled “Don’t worry young man, you are doing a fine job! Dedh din mein, already bahoot kuch dekh liya hai… warna toh mujhe itne saal tumhari aunty ke taane sunne padte thay, ke isse Mt Abu toh dikaya hi nahi tha. Isiliye itne saal baad wapas lana pada!” Sharma uncle winced as his wife kicked him under the table for making such inappropriate comments in front of present company.

Sharma Aunty shared some tips with Naina for local shopping ideas and gave her the names of couple of shops where the local textiles were sold at reasonable rates. When Naina mentioned that the Maheshwaris were in textiles themselves, Aunty immediately noted down their name and contact details muttering something about her niece’s impending wedding.

After they finished breakfast and bid goodbye to the Sharmas, Sameer chuckled teasing his wife “Agar bhaanji ki shaadi ki shopping karne Auntyji Ahmedabad pohunch gayi toh unhe discounts dilwane ki responsibility tumhari hogi!” Naina muttered “O ho… suchi mein thodehi aayengi itni dur shopping ke liye… yeh toh bus kehni ki baate hoti hai.” Sameer continued pulling her leg “Chahe kahi bhi le jana bus tumhare Tajike rishtedar ki dukan pe mat le jana jaha se tumhari sarees kharidi thi!” She pouted “Sameer, aap kitne din tak mujhe Taiji ki sarees ko leke taane marenge?” He laughed “Taane thode hi maar raha hu… par ha, cheedana toh main kabhi nahi chodunga! Naina, kasam se, kya choice hai yaar unki… bechare Tauji!” She joined in his laughter too.

As they approached the main reception area, Naina said “Aap uppar jaake taiyar ho jayiye… main lounge mein thodi der magazine padhti hu.” He headed upstairs by himself and she sat down in one corner with one of the recent copies of Flimfare which had Aamir Khan featuring on the cover and which promised the readers a bare-all interview with the superstar. Though the interview indeed shed a lot of light on the Cute Khan’s journey, Naina found her mind drifting to her own hero and his declaration the night before that he did not want them to move forward in a rush.

As she had laid awake for a long time the night before, even after he had fallen asleep, Naina had felt overcome by her own irritation at his lack of wanting to kiss her again. His words humme aage ka sab theek se soch samajh ke hi, aage badhna hai had seemed rather cryptic to her. She had said something similar to him couple of nights back, but she had been thinking of not wanting to get pregnant so soon. Was he too thinking of the same now? Did his hesitancy steam from their decision that they shouldn’t start a family at this point in time.

She flipped some pages and checked out the glamorous outfits featuring in the issue. Noting there was almost no possibility of her every wearing any off those off shoulder and cliched waist dresses, she instead looked at the accessories with more interest. But, none of it could hold her attention for very long. She considered taking a walk in the surrounding garden before heading to their room but soon abandoned that idea too and headed upstairs.

Sameer had taken the key, so Naina stood knocking on the door when she headed to the room. After couple of minutes of increasingly loud knocking, he asked from the other side “Kaun hai?” She replied a little impatiently “Main hu!” As soon as he opened the door, she barged in complaining “Kitni der se darwaja khat-khata rahi hu… so gaye thay kya?!” But then felt a little off balance seeing him in his vest and a towel tied at his waist. After a few moments of staring without blinking, she turned away flustered. He replied as he walked towards the closet to fetch some clothes “Soya nahi tha… nahane gaya tha. Woh TV pe cricket ke highlights dikha rahe thay pehele, toh bus wahi dekhne main late ho gaya.”

She watched him guardedly from the corner of her eye as he pulled up a pair of jeans and then pulling the towel away from his waist started drying his hair with it. Sameer glanced at the clock as he headed towards the mirror and remarked “Waise abhi aur pandhra-bees minute toh hai. Daro mat late nahi honge hum!” She was too lost in admiring the Adonis in front of her, the white vest highlighting his lean muscular build. Naina wondered disconcerted, Sirf jeans aur baniyaan mein koi itna handsome kaise lag sakta hai? Inhe toh baniyaan ke liye modelling karna chahiye! And then she immediately took the thought back, not wanting anyone else to fawn over her man.  Fortunately, or unfortunately, he soon pulled a pale blue t-shirt over his head and continued getting ready.

Sameer cast a look in her direction as soon as he finished drying and combing his still slightly wet hair, she sat on the bed looking lost. He walked over and asked her “Kya hua? Kaha khoi ho tum?” She fumbled “Main toh bus dekh rahi thi… soch rahi thi…” He probed “Aur kya dekh rahi thi ya soch rahi thi??” She stammered looking worried “Nahi… matlab kuch yaad kar rahi thi.. woh neeche baithi thi toh kuch yaad aaya. Bus wahi soch rahi thi…” He sat down next to her “Kya hua Naina? Itni pareshaan kyun lag rahi ho?”

She averted her gaze to her lap and after fidgeting a little with her dupatta started hesitantly “Sameer, woh… shayad aapko pata nahi hoga… mujhe bhi nahi pata tha. Par, ek baar... hum jab gaye thay na unke ghar… Pooja mein… tab Poonam Bhabhi ne kuch bataya tha. Mujhe toh kuch theek se samajh hi nahi aaya tha, par unhone kaha, toh theek hi hoga na?” He clasped her hand gently “Naina, kya bol rahi ho tum? Poonam Bhabhi ne kya kaha tha?” She struggled to remember the exact word now “Kuch toh hota hai… shayad Comdol… ya Condol… mujhe theek se yaad nahi” He was utterly confused “Comdol?? Aur kya karte hai uska?”

Her shoulders slumped “Pata nahi… mujhe toh laga tha shayad kiss karte waqt use karte hai. Par aap ne toh kaha ke usse toh kuch hota hi nahi. Aur jab maine pocha tha, toh aapne kaha tha ke aapke pass toh koi talwar bhi nahi hai… aur waise bhi talwar ka kya lena dena hoga family planning se?!” He was even more confounded, what was she going on about? Family planning, swords, kiss?? He asked “Naina, Bhabhi se exactly kya baat hui thi??” She felt a little stupid now for bringing this up “Chodiye… mujhse hi samajhne mein koi galti hui hogi.”

He persisted and she finally explained that Poonam had mentioned that they were practising family planning and she had asked if that meant that they stayed in separate rooms too. Poonam had seemed very surprised at this insinuation and mentioned this ‘Comdol’, which is apparently like a Mayan for a Talwar, but she couldn’t see how any of that could be related! Sameer experienced a eureka moment and asked “Comdol nahi… shayad Condom kaha hoga unhone!” She looked up in surprise “Ha! Shayad wahi kaha tha… Par, aap ko Pata hai uske baare main?”

It was his turn to fumble a bit now “Ha, pata hai na… woh main… pehele wale toh ghar par hi bhool gaya tha, toh kal hi aur kharide bhi thay…” She uttered “Par uska karte kya hai? Kiss mein toh nahi use karte na?” He suddenly burst out laughing at her misconstructions and went on as she looked at him baffled “Bilkul bewakuf ho! Condom aur kiss ke liye… Naina, seriously aisa idea tumhe aaya bhi kaha se hoga!” She looked at him feeling like an idiot, his laughter did nothing to comfort her already frazzled mind. Naina rubbed her kangans, eyes lowered trying to swallow the moisture starting to suddenly gather at the back of her throat. He still amused by the idea, missed the look of apprehension flickering across her face.

The phone rang and it was the reception calling to inform them that their cab booked for the morning tour had arrived. Sameer confirmed that they would be downstairs soon and then said to her “Cab aa gayi hai, jaldi se camera rakhlo!” And then he called over his shoulder chuckling as he headed to the restroom “Itna socho mat… Comdol ke baare mein hum baad mein baat karenge!” Naina sulked as she added the camera to her bag and then brushed her hair quickly, Jururat hi kya thi inhe kuch batane ki?? Bahoot shauq hai na khud ki hassi udwane ka!

Sameer still amused by her inference thought to himself as he washed his hands, Yaar, such mooch bilkul buddhu hai! Comdol?? But then a look of fondness came over him, Meri bholi si buddhu… Waise, sukhar hai bhagwan ka… kuch toh pata hai, aur uppar se soch bhi rahi hai!

Naina was ready to leave as he exited the washroom and they headed to the foyer. There were two other elderly couples waiting by the car. Some nods were exchanged and the Maheshwaris got into the back seat of the van. The other four passengers travelling together, seemed to be from some part of South of India and did not speak much Hindi. Plus, they seemed to be happy to leave Sameer and Naina to themselves and chat with each other.

Once they were on their way, Naina asked Sameer how long the drive was supposed to take. He muttered something about probably an hour and half to two hours, but when she seemed dissatisfied with his vague reply, he asked the driver for confirmation. The driver informed them that Achalgard fort was about 11 kms away and the Achaleshwar Mahadev temple just a few-minute walk from the fort. Sameer uttered surprised “Par receptionist toh keh rahi thi ke dedh-do ghante lagenge!” Driver replied “Sahebji, aane-jaane mein aadha-pauna ghantha lagta hai, aur udhar mandir aur fort dekhne mein karib-karib dedh ghatna lagega aapko… toh do ghante ho hi jaayenge.” Hearing this explanation, Naina muttered “Itna pass hai toh tour book karne ki kya jarurat thi? Humari gaddi mein hi ho aate…” Her husband mumbled back “Yaar, ussne theek se bataya nahi tha… warna main book hi kyun karta…”

Naina feeling irritated looked out of the window thinking, Jarur woh bright red lipstick lagane wali receptionist rahi hogi kal waha… tabhi galat sunn ke aaye hai! Khud ko itnisi baat samajh nahi aayi, aur mujhe hass rahe thay… Comdol-Comdol karke! Aage se main bhi kuch na toh bolungi… na poochungi! Itni bhi bewakuf nahi hu main!!!  Sameer looked at his wife and thought, Jarur yahi soch ke ghussa ho rahi hogi ke khamakham tour pe paise spend kar diye! Theek hai na… ho gayi galatfaimi… toh kya ab pura time muh banake hi baithi rahegi?! He tried putting his arm around her, but she shrugged it away gesturing towards the other passengers. He half-heartedly started looking at the passing sights from the window on his side.

The fifteen-minute trip was quickly completed, and the van stopped near the gate of the temple. The driver shared some directions for heading towards the fort after visiting the temple and then looking at his watch told them that he would be waiting for them in the little restaurant opposite the temple in an hour and half. As he drove away, Naina asked a little confused “Tour kyun dene wala hai humme?” Sameer shrugged and then muttered “Shayad fort ke pass koi guide hoga… dekhte hai. Chalo pehle darshan toh kar lete hai tumhare Shivji ke.”

Equipped with the Pooja thali bought from one of the stalls outside the temple, Naina entered the temple closely followed by her husband. It was a very old structure built in an ornate style associated with Jain temples.  As per the information boards hanging by the entrance, it was built in the 9th century by the Paramara Dynasty, but had been recently restored in 1979 and hence the marble structure now stood in much better shape than it had over the few hundred years preceding the renovation.

A few devotees lingered in the premises. A group of about half a dozen older men sat chatting on some benches to one side, probably an everyday meeting point for them. The bronze bell hanging at the entrance to the inner sanctum, chimed loudly every few minutes.

Suddenly they came across one of the biggest and rather unusual Nandi idol, a huge four tonne statue made of Panchadhatu. Sameer and Naina walked around the Nandi in awe, taking in the finesse of the idol and wondering how it gleamed like it had been recently created, when it had been exposed to the elements for about a thousand years.

After offering their prayers, they walked around the temple taking in the beauty for some time and then settled in a quite spot. Naina’s earlier annoyance diminished to a great degree, as she prayed for their future successes and happy life together. Sameer offered a small prayer very much to the point, Bhagwanji isska mood jaldi theek kar dijiye… aur mujhe bhi aage ka kuch rasta dikha dijiye!

By the time she finished praying and opened her eyes, her smile was back, and she remarked “Kitna sukoon hai ka iss jagah mein?” He agreed and then after a few moments of thought asked “Naina, yeh mandir ke darwaje pe ghanti kyun hoti hai?? Nahi matlab, humare ghar ke bahar toh bell isliye hota hai taaki gharwalon ko samajhe ke koi aaya hai aur aake darwaja khole… Bhagwanji ko announcement ke kya jarurat hai?!” She pondered over his question for a bit trying to find a reason and then muttered “Shayad Poojariji ko pata chalne ke liye hogi…” He countered “Aur unhe kyun batana hai? Mandir toh Bhagwanji ka ghar hai, right? Aur bhar timing bhi toh likha hota hai ke kitne se kitne baaje tak khula hai…” Naina couldn’t come up with a satisfactory answer to his query, but both left the place discussing the different hypothesis for the presence of a bell in a temple. Years later, Sameer would read and share with his wife the supposed scientific reason for the bell in the temple – ‘It clears our mind and helps bring the focus to devotion as we enter the inner sanctum’.

The Achalgarh fort which was a couple of minute walk from the temple, was in a fairly dilapidated condition having been last restored sometime in the fifteenth century, not at all as well preserved as the temple. The first gate to the fort called Hanumanpol was in sort of decent condition, but there was hardly anything standing inside, just few bits of crumbling stone walls here and there. The older couples accompanying them in the van had trudged up the slope, and after a few minutes of looking around and probably not finding it a fort that was worth exploring, had shortly headed down.

It did present a good view of the surrounding region though. The weather was pleasant, and the surrounding greenery provided a good background, hence a number of photos were clicked. Sameer was happy to see his wife’s unrestrained smile, as she posed for him. She was dressed in an ink-blue shalwar-kameez which had a narrow white lace border and a white dupatta to go with it. Her open hair and dupatta flew in various directions as the breeze at the top of the mountain picked up. Chuckling softly, he clicked a couple of candid shots as she struggled to hold on to the dupatta and grumbled about his fondness for open hair.

Just a few meters away there were two other couples, who based on the henna and the red bridal bangle set worn by the two girls, seemed to be newlyweds too. The young men were either close friends or related, as they seemed to be very friendly. After clicking a lot of couple shots, one of the guy’s walked over to Sameer and requested him to click some group photos too. He then offered to click some couple shots for Sameer and Naina too. Sameer stood hugging her tightly from behind in one and pulled her in a side hug in another. When Naina then had asked him to stand at a respectable distance in the next one, he grumbled “Yaar, unse kya sharmana… dekha nahi kitne chipak-chipake photos nikal rahe thay woh log!” She tutted “O ho… kuch sath wali photos gharwalon ko bhi toh dekhne padegi… Taiji ne koi aisi-waisi dekh li toh hazar baate mujhe hi sunni padegi!” As they headed back, Sameer complained “Naina, tum yaha bhi, baar baar unhe kyun yaad karti ho yaar? Enjoy karne aaye hai!”

On reaching the restaurant as per their driver’s directions, they spotted the elderly couples sipping on some hot drinks, but the driver was nowhere to be seen. Sameer ordered some cold drinks and a plate of onion pakodas.

Twenty minutes later, the food and drinks were all gone and yet there was still no sign of the driver. The other passengers had also started getting a little restless. When he enquired with the guy at the counter, he was assured that the driver would arrive eventually. The driver arrived almost an hour later than expected and fumbled some excuse about the van encountering an issue with the engine and having to stop at a garage, but Sameer was far from convinced about the authenticity of his claim and kept asking him various questions trying to expose his lie.

Naina was once again in her silence-is-golden mode, and despite repeated questioning and some self-analysis, Sameer couldn’t figure what had triggered her withdrawal. After all, he had even made it a point to offer her some of his cola and had sipped a few times from her bottle of Fanta!

When the van dropped them off in the market, Naina insisted she wasn’t hungry and would rather just walk around and finish some more of the gift shopping. Sameer was starting to feel a little irritated himself, and hence announced that he would head back to the hotel and just order some room service. As he walked away, he was thinking, Ajeeb ladki hai… Subhe family planning ki baat karni thi madam ko, aur ab baat hi nahi karni! Sau baar pooch liya, har baar wahi jawab hai ke kuch nahi hua. Agar kuch nahi hua, toh yeh maun vrat kiss khushi main rakh liya hai ab?! Nahi batana, toh bataye… ab main bhi nahi poochunga!

Naina returned to the hotel room about an hour and a half later laden with couple of heavy bags. She seemed to have mellowed a little and shared “Bookshop mein gayi thi, kaha tha na kal Chinese recipe ki books lungi, toh socha dekh leti hu… Preeti aur mere liye li hai. Chachiji aur Taiji ke liye ek Knitting ki kitab, aur Deepika aur Pralay ke liye kuch story books kahridi hai. Bus Mummyji ke liye kuch samajh nahi aaya, soch unke liye koi local style mein Saree ya Shawl le lenge.” After Sameer had a quick look at them and made the expected response, she put away the books away. He remarked to her “Sandwiches mangwaye thay maine lunch ke liye. Extra bhi hai, bhook lagi ho toh kha lo.”  She murmured her thanks and nibbled on the cheese and chutney sandwiches.

Sameer had been watching some English movie but remembering her outburst from the night before changed the channel to one playing some old Hindi songs. She suddenly uttered “Aaj sham ko bahar jaayenge toh ghar pe phone karenge, kal toh kiya hi nahi… Nanaji ne kaha tha na, ke roz phone karna.” He nodded in agreement thinking, Baaki sab ke liye shopping karni hai… Nanaji se phone karke baate karni hai… bus mujhse hi baat nahi karna hai! Aur bahaar jaana hi kyun hai?? Van mein kuch kum ignore kiya tha, jo ab baaki kasar kissi boat mein nikalni hai?!

He muttered “Mere sar mein dard ho raha hai. Thodi der soyunga, uthne pe decide karenge ki boating jana hai ya nahi.” She quickly finished the sandwich in her hand and heading to the closet started looking for something and then called to him “Sameer, balm toh sath lana bhool gayi main, par abhi leke aati hu… pass mein hi maine medical dekha tha.” Feeling placated by her instant concern, he replied “Nahi, uski koi jarurat nahi hai… bus thodasa hai, aise hi theek ho jayega.” She asked anxiously “Tel laga du? Thodi malish se shayad behetar lagega…” He mumbled “Boating ke photos mein tel acha nahi lagega. Bus adha ghanta aaram kar leta hu. Meri aankh lag jaye toh, utha dena panch baaje tak.” She nodded “Ji, main tab tak kuch kapde dhone thay toh dho leti hu.” He exclaimed “Yaha kapde kyun dhone hai?! Laundry mein do ya ghar jaake dho lena. Sukhaogi kaha unhe?” She replied calmly “Bus woh andar wale dhone hai… subhe tak toh bathroom mein hi sukh jayenge. Aap so jaayiye.”

Sameer heard her moving around the room for a few minutes, tiptoeing towards the bathroom, the door closing and then he drifted off to sleep.

He woke up with a start, it seemed eerily dim and quite in the room. He looked at his wristwatch and then looked again, how could it be half past six? And why was he alone in the room? Did she go boating by herself?! No, that was a ridiculous idea. A glance in the direction of the bathroom and the light filtering through the bottom slit, indicated she was inside. He jumped out of the bed and banged on the door “Naina, mujhe uthaya kyun nahi?? Sade-chee baj gaye!”

Naina was startled by the banging. She had put the toilet cover down and was propped on it, lost in one of the books purchased that afternoon. She scrambled off the makeshift stool and opening the door squeaked “Sade-chee??! Sorry, mera dhayan hi nahi raha.” He asked astonished “Itni der se andar hi ho kya?!” She stuttered “Ha… who Kapade dhone liye… phir… ha, phir socha bahar light lagayungi toh aap ki neend kharab ho jayegi… isilye andar hi baithi.” He exclaimed “Kya?! Tum aise hi andar baithi rahi dhai ghanta?” She muttered “Aise hi nahi… padh rahi thi...” He looked lost “Tum kya sath mein notes banane ke liye kitabe bhi leke aayi ho?” She gulped nervously “Nahi toh… woh toh aaj layi hui kitab padh rahi thi.” He asked uncertainly “Chinese recipes wali?” She looked a little relived “Ha… wahi padh rahi thi! Maine kaha tha na jaate hi ghar pe try karungi…”

He shook his head and entered the bathroom dumfounded and then looking at the bucket remarked surprised “Kapde toh panni mein hi hai! Matlab tumne yeh dhoye bhi nahi?” She looked confused too and then muttered “Bus ek minute, aap bahar jayiye… abhi sukhane dalti hu!”

Sameer stood by the window watching the dusk settling, feeling more and more unsettled and annoyed. Another day gone… and apart from the few minutes of light conversation in the temple and fort, it felt like nothing of significance had happened, nothing that they would recall happily years later. Wasn’t a honeymoon supposed to be a period of being cloaked in each other’s love, where the rest of the world ceased to exist? And she had spent the last few hours locked in the bathroom reading recipes! What was the point of being on this trip?!

Naina put their undergarments to dry on the rack behind the door, wrapped the book in her dupatta and stepped out of the bathroom. He was by the window, his back rigid. She took a few steps towards the closet to put the book away, wondering what she should suggest, now that boating was once again off the agenda for the evening. Sameer tersely called over his shoulder “Samaam sametna shuru kar do. Hum kal subhe breakafast ke baad wapas chalenge.” She halted in the middle of the room looking like a startled doe “Wapas jayenge?! Par abhi toh, do aur din ka booking hai humara…”

He turned around and said sounding dejected “Ruk ke kya karna hai? Kum se kum waha ghar aur office mein char log toh honge baat karne ke liye…” She took a few steps in his direction “Sameer, hum bhi toh baate kar rahe hai na…” He snorted “Peechle che-saat ghante mein tumne geen ke dus sentence bhi nahi kahe honge…” She blinked and mumbled “Aane ke baad shopping dikhayi toh thi aap ko… kisske liye kya laya.” His uttered exasperated “Bhaad mein jaaye woh sari shooping! Pehele char ghante books kharidne, aur phir char ghante unhe padhne mein! Pura din tum bus usme hi busy rahi. Aur main pagal ki tarah yaha akele baitha hu!”

She wanted to highlight that he was vastly exaggerating the time she had spent shopping and then reading the book, but it didn’t seem prudent in that moment and she instead said timidly “Abhi toh aap so rahe thay na…” He turned his back to her again and shot sounding infuriated “Maine sone se pehele, bahoot clearly kaha tha tumse ke mujhe paanch baje tak jaga dena, hum boating chalenge. Par tumhe to mere sath kuch karna hi nahi hai. Na baate aur na boating! Mujhe nahi rahena yaha!” She stammered “Sameer… wapas jayenge… toh… gharwale sab poochange na, ke jaldi kyun aagaye hum…” His jaw clenched “Bata dena, ke itna acha recipe book mila ke tumhe usse try karne ki bahoot jaldi ho rahi thi!”

Eyes tearing up she looked at the book under her dupatta and then stepping forward hugged him very tightly. Sameer was stunned to feel her crash into his back and to see her one arm encircle his waist. He felt her rub her cheek on his back and press herself even harder against him as she muttered “Sorry… mujhe samjha hi nahi ke aap itne naraaz ho jayenge.” When he did not reply, she went on, her voice catching a little “Please, jaldi wapas jaane ki baat mat kijiye… Pakka promise… main bahoot baate karungi aapse.”

He softened but not completely and asked sounding disappointed “Naina, aisa kaise kar sakti ho yaar tum? Kal tumhe movie pasand nahi aaya toh maine immediately band kar diya tha… aur parso jab hum… tumne kaha toh main ruk gaya na? Aisa thodehi hota hai ke sirf main tumhare mann ka sochu. Kitni baar poocha maine aaj, phir bhi tumne bataya nahi ke chup kyun ho gayi ho… koi mindreading superpowers toh hai nahi mere pass!” As She murmured another apology, he pointed out “Abhi bhi tumhari woh recipe book choob rahi hai meri peeth mein!”

She moved it away from between them. This was so not going as she had hoped! She had wanted to fix it all, but instead it was just spirally out of control. His ire she could handle, but his disappointment was another thing. Her voice wobbled precariously as she extended the book to the front “Recipe book nahi padh rahi thi…” Casting a cursory glance at the book veiled by her dupatta, he turned towards her and went on “Recipe book ho… ya Dohe ka… usse koi farak nahi padta. Baat tumhare “ Pushing the dupatta to one side, eyes lowered, she presented the book almost in front of his face.

He looked at it slightly irritated for a moment and then his expressions turned to confusion and then one of mounting shock. He tugged it out of her hand and after looking at it for a moment exclaimed “The Cowboy’s Seduction??! Yeh toh… waisi wali kitab hai??” As she stood silently avoiding his eyes, he asked “Yeh kaha se aayi? Matalb, tumhe kaha mili??” She replied “Aayegi kaha se? Main hi bookshop se leke aayi hu.” He was stumped “Par, tumne jo books dekhaye thay usme toh nahi thi…” She muttered “Purse mein rakhi thi… taaki aap na dekhe.” He responded sounding a little apprehensive “Toh yeh padh rahi thi tum andar baithke… Isski kya jarurat thi Naina?”

Naina turned away slightly “Subhe jab maine Poonam bhabhi wali baat batayi, aap hi toh hass rahe thay mujhe… ke main bilkul bewakuf hu… kuch nahi samajhti. Aur baad mein woh dono bhi…” She continued after a brief pause “Maine socha, pehele jo pata chala tha, woh bhi kitab mein se hi samjha tha… toh ab bhi koi kitab hi shayad kaam aaye.” He quickly flipped the pages and then observed “Issme toh koi tasveere nahi hai…” She was confused “Kaise tasveere??” He fumbled “Nahi…. Kuch nahi… par sab kuch likha hai iss mein… pehele toh tumne kaha tha ke sirf kiss ke baare mein padha tha.”

She explained that she had first picked the other books and then had started browsing through the romance section. Fortunately, the shopkeeper had sensed her anxiety and helped her choose this one. He looked at her in dread “Tumne kissi ajnabi dukandar se yeh discuss kiya?!” She muttered “Koi Chachiji ke umar wali aurat thi… baaton pe se toh Bengali lagi mujhe. Unhonon mujhe poocha ke kuch khaas dhund rahi hu kya? Mujhe toh suza hi nahi kya kahu… phir unhone poocha, honeymoon pe aayi ho kya? Jab maine ha kaha, toh unhone do kitabe nikal ke di, aur kehene lagi inhe padhungi toh samajh jayungi.”

Taking her hand, Sameer gently pulled her towards the sofa and said as they sat down “Naina, ek toh main tumhe nahi hass raha tha subhe… bus mujhe Bhabhi ne tumhe jo bataya, tumne jo socha aur kiss tarah mujhe toh dur dur tak kuch samjha hi nahi tha jab tumne mujhe talwar ke baare mein poocha tha… uss puri situation ko soch ke hassi aayi thi. Bewakuf toh bus tumhe pyaar se kaha tha…”

She rubbed her kangans “Par aap bhi toh pareshaan ho rahe thay… maine dekha aap kaise baar baar soch pe pad jaate thay.” He admitted “Ha… bus samajh nahi aa raha thay tumne kya aur kaise batau. Par main koi na koi raasta dhundh hi leta… tumhe pareshaan hone ki koi jarurat nahi thi Naina. Agar woh shopkeeper koi aadmi hota toh?” She flushed a bit “Pata nahi…” And then she added “Mujhe nahi laga ke humari chaar din ki chandani… bina kissi chandani ke hi khatam ho jaaye…” He was perplexed “Chaar din ki chandani, matlab?”

Naina recounted that when she had headed to the restroom in the restaurant after the fort visit as they waited for their driver to show up, she had run into the two newlywed girls that they had seen while clicking the photos. As she waited for the toilets to become available, one of them had smiled at her and enquired where she was from. Presuming that she just spoke Gujrathi, they had then continued chatting in Marwari with each other, while she was in one of the toilets.

Girl 1: Maine bhi aaj bola tha inko, bahoot celing fan dekh liya maine, aaj toh Mt Abu mein romance ke alawa kuch aur bhi dekhna hai!

Both had giggled before the other one replied.

Girl 2: Muhje toh samamjh hi nahi aata ke kitne baar wahi karna hota hai! Sone se pehele, subhe uthne ke baad, dopahaar mein… Har waqt bus wahi. Ghar jaake kaam kaise karungi main?!

Girl 1: Aare darro mat… Meri jethani keh rahi thi,  yahi khoob enjoy karke aana, yeh toh bus chaar din ki chandani hoti hai… Honeymoon khatam, toh bus sab romance ka josh bhi khatam! Phir bus woh unke dhaftar ke kaam mein, aur hum apne ghar aur ghar walon ke peeche busy.

Girl 2: Acha?? Phir toh abhi enjoy karna hi chahiye. Waise bhi suna hai mere sasural mein toh bahoot mehmaanon ka aana jana laga rehta hai. Meri kamar toh un sabki seva mein hi toot jayegi!

Girl 1: Shuru se hi bol dena ke haath batane ke liye koi achi kaam wali chahiye… warna toh pura din kitchen mein hi khada rehna padega.

They left the restroom planning their strategy for their new life.

Naina had stood in the restroom for some time pondering on what she had overheard. Other girls in her situation were complaining of too much romance, while he had not even repeated the kiss! What if that girl’s Bhabhi had been right? Pooja didi still blushed at the memory of her honeymoon! Was her obliviousness spoiling an important experience or phase of their relationship? And how did all these other girls know how to romance with their husbands?! His laughter that morning had pricked her ego a little. She had almost always known all the answers in the class, while most of the other students had appeared clueless. Seemed like the tables were turned. Well, she was determined to find all the answers even now!

Sameer spoke as she finished “Oh… issiliye mujhe silent treatment de rahi thi tab se…” She muttered “Silent treatment nahi… bus soch rahi thi ke kya karu.” Her eyes turned little damp “Aap toh phir se kiss bhi nahi karna chahate thay… Main nahi chahati thi ke meri wajah se humara honeymoon kharab ho jaye.” He gently tilted her chin up “Naina, meri taraf dekho… kuch kharab nahi ho raha hai. Dekho har rishte ke kuch alag dynamics hote hai, aur sab ka apna speed. Yeh koi competition toh nahi hai na. Aur pyaar toh zindagi bhar ka hota hai, chaar din ki chandani toh nahi ho sakta, right?”

He asked softly “Yeh padhke… are you ok??” When she nodded wordlessly still not meeting his eye, he asked “Main padhu, kya likha hai? Matlab… such mooch sab hai ya nahi…” She paled a little wondering, Isse jyada aur kya ho sakta hai?! But replied “Woh kuch pages fold kiye hai maine… bus wahi hai.” He uttered without thinking “Tum toh such mooch notes bana rahi thi!” She coloured deeply and headed to the bathroom mumbling “Aap padhiye main aati hu…”

When she nervously entered the bedroom sometime later, Sameer already dressed was combing his hair and said “Naina, sade-saat toh baj gaye hai… thodi der market mein ghoom ke dinner karne chalte hai. Aate waqt Nanu aur Chachaji ko phone bhi kar lenge.” As she nodded and quickly dabbed on a little lipstick, she was wondering about his verdict, Kaise poochu ke wahi hota hai ya kuch aur?? He suddenly stood behind her encircling her waist lightly and whispered “Puri information hai tumhari kitab mein… Bookshop wali aunty ko ek thank you card bhejna chahiye!” She leaned back into him in relief.

The stroll through the market was accompanied by a lot of knowing looks and blushes from both. That evening, after two consecutive Chinese dinners, they were both craving for some proper Indian food and enjoyed Pav bhaji with extra butter and mango lassi. As they passed a guy selling roses, Sameer smirked “Bookshop wali aunty ke liye le lu?” She hit his arm “Sameer! Please… baar baar iss bare mein tease mat kijiye…” He chuckled putting his arm around her “Waise, tumne kaha thay do books de thi aunty ne…” She muttered sounding nervous “Dusri abhi padhi nahi hai… par uss mein bhi wahi hoga na.” He rubbed her waist reassuringly “Bus aise hi poocha maine… kuch aur padhne ki jarurat nahi hai.”

The phone calls to Nanaji and Chachaji went well, everyone back home was pleased to hear that they were enjoying the trip. Preeti had a lot of questions about Mt Abu, their hotel and of course about the food they had eaten so far! Chachiji had few instructions about the importance of wearing warm clothing in such weather and ensuring that she bought gifts for all her in-laws. Vishakha assured them that Nanaji’s was in good health and they should just focus on enjoying the trip.

When they retired to bed that night after watching a movie on the TV, Sameer whispered comfortingly as he cuddled “Naina, tum tension mat lena, tumhe ab pata hai, iska yeh matlab nahi ke humme koi jaldi hai.” She relaxed a little, but just a little. Couple of hours later she was still wide awake, her mind buzzing with all the newly acquired information, and her body in acute anticipation and some anxiety of the awaiting experiences. Would it all be exhilarating just like the kiss?

The next morning, they decided to go boating before lunch, as it was not going as per plan in the evenings due to some reason or the other. She wore the jeans with a black top while he was dressed in his jeans and a black and white stripped t-shirt. They had a lovely time in the pedalling boat, Sameer every now and then teasing her that he was doing all the hard word, while she just clicked photos and hardly pedalled. The sun was starting to come up at an angle, and so seeing her squint, he handed her his sunglasses. When the boat lurched to one side a couple of times while changing directions, he laughed heartily at her reactions when Naina squealed, which of course earned him some annoyed looks from his wife.

Afterwards while in the market, Sameer bought her a pair of sunglasses. Naina protested as usual “Isski kya jarurat hai? Mujhe kaha itni peheni hoti hai…” He overruled her objections “Hello… yeh acha hai, jab jarurat padegi meri le lo gi… nahi nahi, tum apni le lo. Naina, mere wale toh gents wale hai, tumhare liye thode chote chahiye. Aur Ahmedabad mein bhi kitni dhoop hoti hai, kaam kyun nahi aayenge??” They ended up buying another pair of Sunglasses for his mom too and some showpieces for the Somani’s Delhi home.

Post a quick lunch of Aloo and Paneer Parathas at the Paratha House, they headed back to the hotel for the mid-day rest.

Naina changed into a previously worn green and pink shalwar-kameez, regretting her lack of foresight in packing a change of clothes for the hotel. Sameer was soon chuckling at the antics of Tom and Jerry, while Naina sat next to him on the bed fidgeting with her dupatta. She was feeling torn between some relief at his being so understanding and giving her the time to get used to the idea of intimacy, but also feeling agitated at the idea of experiencing it for the first time in a house full of other family members. She paled thinking, what if it really hurt a lot and she screamed… would his mother or Nanaji come knocking on their bedroom door to check if everything was alright?

He suddenly held her hand “Phat jayega woh dupatta… kitna torture kar rahi ho bechare ko!” She smiled shakily. He scurried closer and drawing her into a hug asked “Kya hua Naina? Phir se pareshaan ho??” She shook her head in negation not sure how to share her apprehensions and just rested her head on his chest.

Sameer was feeling a little lost too. The fact that she had hugged him after reading that book had been reassuring. At least she was not turned off by the contents and did not find the concept of their closeness repulsive. But, did that mean she was ready to actually experience it all? The night before he had deliberately refrained from initiating anything, wanting to give her some time to come to terms with these new ideas.

He hesitantly kissed her cheeks and then further emboldened by her not pulling away, sought her lips. Naina first sighed in relief at not having to broach the subject herself and then in contentment at re-experiencing that pleasure. This time around, her lips opened with very little prompting from him. His lips and hands soon seemed to be everywhere. As he impatiently unzipped her kurta, he whispered in a raspy voice “Naina, tumhe jab bhi lage, mujhe rukne ke liye kehna, okay?” She nodded, her love for him growing more tender.

He groaned at the sight of the red lace and peaks that had been awaiting discovery. She shuddered and moaned at the assault on her senses as his mouth first explored her tiny waist, the soft raise of her belly and then moved upwards. As he unhooked her bra, he set free their passion and innate need for each other too. For something so new, it still felt so oddly familiar, so right. She welcomed his bold expressions of love with her own shy ones. When he unknotted her shalwar, she lifted her body slightly to let him slide it away easily. His exhilaration was at a fever pitch as more red lace was revealed.

Time and everything around ceased to exist. As if they were the only man and woman in the world. Their lovemaking which started soft and slow, and was interjected with a few moments of fumbling, soon gathered an urgency, like the survival of the universe depended on their union.

The pain when it came, was sharp and swift for her, but the joy and wonder of the moment far greater. When he mumbled an apology for the pain as he collapsed all spent on top of her, she only clung to him harder and pressed her lips to his in answer.

Pulling the sheets over them, they laid finally satiated in each other’s arms. A tiny satisfied smile played at the corner of his lips, while she blushed time and again remembering the endearments and caresses that he had just showered her with. Sameer thought contently that though at times nervous and slightly surprised, she had mostly moaned his name in response to his ministering of love and desire. The afternoon grew hazy and their eyes heavy.

Sameer woke from a sated sleep, with his wife curled in his arms. He was still unclothed, but she had managed to slip into the t-shirt which he had discarded earlier. He wanted to protest at this need to cover herself, but realised it was probably too soon and instead awakened her with some nuzzling and kisses. She mumbled noting the darkness starting to settle in the room “Kitne baje hai? Lagta hai bahoot der soye thay hum…” He snuggled some more “Toh?? Abhi toh humara honeymoon shuru hua hai…” She blinked hard trying to think of a response and then stayed silent flushing yet again.

As she scampered to the bathroom holding her bunched up clothes, still dressed in just his t-shirt grazing her mid-thigh, he had hardened again and wanted to pull her back to bed. But he exercised an enormous amount of self-control in that moment and for the rest of that evening wanting to give her body and mind both a chance to acclimatize to this new experience. He probably needed some time as well.

Naina stood in the shower, marvelling at the happenings of the afternoon. She felt like she was seeing every part of the body she had known for the last twenty years in a new light. It had never occurred to her that it was capable of feeling so much, of giving so much. His intense pleasure as he touched and tasted her, had left her reeling. At one point, after he removed her bra, he had turned her around and urgently kissed and nibbled some point on her back moaning “Naina, tumhe nahi pata tumhare iss til ne kitna tadpaya hai mujhe. Bus uss red blouse mein se dikhta hai… waise sataya toh tumhare saare modern blouses ne hai!” And then sucking on her soft oversensitive earlobe he has promised huskily “Dekh lena, ab main bhi geen geen ke badle lunga!” She clenched down there at the memory of those words.

They decided to stay in for the rest of the evening and order some room service. There was a new awareness in every gaze exchanged between them that evening.

The cable played the brand-new release ‘Andaaz Apna Apna’ featuring Aamir, Raveena, Salman and Karisma. The movie which would go on to become a classic cult over the years, had Sameer and Naina in splits over the attempts by both the heroes to woo the wrong heiress and then Salman reluctantly falling under the spell of the real heiress.

When the song Yeh Raat Aur Yeh Doori, Tere Milna Hai Jaruri played on the screen, Sameer happily murmured as he snuggled closer to her “Mere liye toh ab absolutely no doori!” She smiled contently as she placed her head in the crook of his neck.

Hey May,

Thanks for such a long and lovely update...

The update was as usual very realistic. I loved the fact that Naina took the job in her hand and got the knowledge to save their moments...  Very few girls have the courage to take this step and after knowing the facts it takes a lot of time to accept it...

Even Sameer's self control and concern for Naina was beautiful...smiley27 Specially after they had the conversation...

After so much of hesitation b/w them, their consummation was described in a very organic way smiley1

There is so much to say about the scenes you described...Loved it to fullest...

Now I think Majnu Sameer will be uncontrollable 😂

Cheers,

Akanksha

First of all, Kudos! to you May for writing such a lovely chapter. Loved every bit of it. No one could have ever explained about their insecurities at that point in time the way you did. Finally, they have taken an important step ahead in their marriage.

I am glad that you took it forward realistically. Many couples can face this situation when they don't have any clue about the next step to be taken. But, you managed to convey it to the readers in the most simple way.

Eagerly waiting for the next update. Lots Of Love❤

Awesome, lovely ,superb, romantic update dear. Totally loved this update. His anger was though on point. But finally Naina found about intimacy herself. Hence their honeymoon started. And my dear May u have written it so wonderfully yaar no vulgarness nothing such but simple love making between a couple. And will be eagerly waiting for your next update. Because as now the show is in last phase I can't express how bad it felt as our show is ending but will be truly remembered by reading ur ff. So will be waiting for next.
