An Amazing Chapter

Geet performed and everyone loved it

however she was disappointed not finding Maan there to congratulate her

and when he did take her into his arms Geet felt that he was embarrassed to be

seen with her but he explains just how mesmerized he was with her

now asking her to come away with him and she not replying he got that she

is denying his request , thought she wanted to go I believe Geet should have at least

spoke to Maan not let him think that he is doing something wrong

Geet’s first performance in front of Maan. And not seeing him in the auditorium after the performance she assumes the worst. But of course Maan soon disabused her of that notion.

Will she go away with him? Does she have the courage to do it.

Sorry, sorry, sorry for the late post! I was busy with exams and a few other things. Wait's over. Here's the next chapter:--

18: Lovedale

“Maan! Would you mind taking your honewali biwi out today? Take her somewhere, anywhere... just get her out of my hair. I can’t handle her anymore! Please, will you do it for me?”

“Sure, mummy ji. Whatever you say.”

Kiran shook her head and smiled as she headed to get her sulking daughter out of her room. Kids! Who would believe these two are going to tie the knot in a few days!

***

The weather was unusually warm and muggy and the skies were overcast over the city of Ooty, the Queen of the Hills, but nothing could trounce the expression on Geet’s masculine companion’s face.

Earlier at her suggestion she and Maan had accompanied Sid and Tanya and their new twins to the annual flower show at the Botanical Gardens but the trip was cut short when one of the boys started throwing up repeatedly and had to be taken to the clinic. Sid, apologizing profusely had offered them a ride back but Geet suggested they take the train to the valley instead. She wanted him to stay with those who needed him the most. Maan had approved with a curt nod but had refrained from saying anything. In fact he had barely spoken all morning!

Geet cast another anxious glance at him as they ambled slowly toward the railway station.

With his jaw set and lips compressed into a thin line he looked as if he was about to have a violent seizure. In other words he looked mad. Absolutely positively mad!

I am sure he’s upset with me about the other night. Or else why didn't he call or come over for two whole days? He just couriered over the wild flowers, as if they are all I care about! Perhaps I should apologize.

“Maan I’m so...”

“What?!” He turned to her abruptly with a dark frown on his face.

She swallowed hard, “I… I think we are very likely to miss the train if we don’t hurry. Follow me!”

“But that isn’t what you were about to tell me Geet! ….Stop! Right now! Gawd!"

She didn’t. Instead she swung sharply on her heels and scrambled fast down a steep rough path that coursed through a thick grove of eucalyptus trees. It served as a shortcut to the train station that even many of the townsfolk were unaware of.

“Slow down Geet!”

But she ran faster, her feet hitting the uneven turf almost as hard as her heart thudded inside her chest. Then all of a sudden she was airborne and would have pitched headlong on her face had it not been for…

“What in hell are you trying to do to me?”

Geet leaned against the rough tree bark, her breath coming fast and shallow, and her head very much in a daze. All she could see clearly was the handsome face in front of her and that he was holding her in bondage. Her limbs refused to move a fraction though nothing visible held them down. She was engulfed by a feeling of abject helplessness unlike anything she’d ever experienced before. Yet at no point did she want to trade it for freedom. Yes. There was no question that there existed something unique and palpable between them that had been given various names in the past. And that something had not diminished but grown stronger over time. It was this very same thing that had brought him back to her. The sensation was eerie---dangerous, wild, and deliriously exhilarating at the same time.

***

Maan on the other hand found himself in a far worse jeopardy as he took in the alluring vision in front of him.

A strong aromatic fragrance scented the air. Light filtering through the canopy composed a poem of gossamer over her sublime form while her luxurious mane woven in a single thick braid lay in dreamy languor alongside her neck--the image was strangely reminiscent of days way past. Yet it was not.

Her bright kohl lined eyes and baby pink cheeks contrasted delightfully with the lavender of her blouse. Tiny diamonds sparkled in her ear lobes and the thin rope of silver she wore around her neck lay in delicious disarray on the silky bed of her heaving chest. And to add to the provocation--- they were alone—all alone!

A groan emanated from somewhere deep within his soul.

“How much longer Geet?” He finally blurted out albeit somewhat tersely.

She blinked; “For what Maan?”

“For the moment when I’ll make you mine?”

***

Geet’s breath snagged in her throat. The world had begun to spin dangerously out of control as he leaned forward and stole the remainder of the light.

She was like a fragment of tattered parchment drifting aimlessly in the breeze when all of a sudden a negative force yanked her backwards and sucked her into a deep bottomless chasm. Her lips parted but she didn’t cry for help. She simply closed her eyes and waited---waited impatiently to be rescued.

“TOOOOT!”

The sharp blast of the train’s air horn sliced through the air and smashed her fantasy to smithereens. Even Maan looked shaken.

“If... if we don’t right leave now we’re sure to miss the train.” She murmured turning away abruptly. It wouldn’t do for him to see the disappointment on her face.

“Damn the bloody train! I’d rather remain here with you Geet!" He declared, reaching for her but she managed to slip away.

***

Lovedale---Geet was hard-pressed into a smile when she read the station name sign inscribed in black on a yellow background. Folks hold such weird romantic notions, she thought. Yet the setting was perfect---a rustic hamlet nestled in the hills, far away from the madding crowd with an adorable blue toy train snorting clouds of white steam as it waited in earnest for passengers to board.

Luckily the crowds were small and Geet was able to procure a seat next to the window. Exhaling with relief, she rested her head against the grill, and allowed the cool breeze to bring welcome solace to her heated complexion. The move at the same time provided her with an excuse to not face him—a situation she was quite desperate to avoid.

But in due course, her agitations were to be allayed by the invigorating scent of pine and the endless vista of soothing green panorama as the train wound its languid way down the hillside. The quaint vision of the tiny engine with the blue carriages trundling behind, as it rolled over bridges and slunk through tunnels brought back wistful reminiscences of a happy and untroubled past. Instinctively she stretched her arm out through the window and spread her fingers wide to feel the wind as it rushed through.

“Geet...Don’t!”

She jumped like a startled hare. She’d forgotten she had company. “Don’t what?”

“Don’t put your arm out unless you want it hacked off.” Maan articulated slowly as if he was speaking to a child. His expression was unfathomable.

“It’s what I’ve always done and see--- here I am in front of you—absolutely unscathed!” she scoffed.

“Stupidity always comes at a price.”

“Are you calling me stupid?”

“I was simply making an observation.”

“All right, so I am! But what does that make you...an imbecile for wanting to marry me?" she demanded with a haughty tilt of her dainty head.

His lips twisted into what she supposed was a condescending smirk; "You should hear yourself speak. A five year old would die laughing.”

“Yes, I am dumb and am proud to remain one!”

“Suit yourself."

She turned her back to him again, furious at losing her calm. It had forever been that way-- their arguments had always made her want to kick and scream.

Fortunately reprieve arrived when the train stopped at the next station. But as luck would have it, Maan beat her to the platform. Geet chose to remain on board taking the opportunity to curse him heartily under her breath while following his progress unhindered.

And she had to admit, despite all her foul feelings, that his tall striking figure and easy carriage as he strode toward a group of small stalls located at the northern end of the platform, turned heads and drew attention from strangers and her alike.

It's a crime against humanity to be so dashing! Oh how I wish he’d never proposed!

Then all of a sudden she felt the compartment jerk as the engine sounded its familiar whistle and the train began to draw slowly away from the station. But her fiancé was nowhere to be seen. Does he plan to abandon me? The creep!

She was distracted from her preoccupation by the businesslike voice of the ticket inspector.

“Can I see your ticket miss?”

“Uh..huh..? she pursed her lips in confused panic.

“The lady is with me and here are our tickets.”

Thank heavens! Her eyes closed in relief. And when she opened them again she was astonished by the sight of a large fresh green tender coconut stuck under her nose. She raised her eyebrows in inquiry.

“A token peace offering;” her companion explained simply.

She accepted after a slight hesitation. The hydration was decidedly welcome.

“You got just one?”

“I took a gamble thinking you may consider sharing it with me. Or was I wrong?” Maan asked, his eyes glinting with devilry. “And to answer your prior question--- yes I am an imbecile for wanting to marry you but I wouldn't change my decision for all the riches in the world. May I...?” His hand extended for the fruit.

“But of course." She said and watched as he sipped deliberately from her straw. Her pulse went haywire. Damn him!

Snatching up a large kalamkari cloth purse from the seat, she began digging in it at random. “Care for some chocolate?” She asked.

“Sure. I’m starving!”

Geet then spotted a couple of young children, a boy and a girl, who were sitting on the bench across from them. They were both staring longingly at the bar. She held it out along with a couple of others. Being an ardent chocoholic, she had the habit of always carrying a small store with her.

Their mother smiled her thanks, then turning to her husband, whispered something rapidly in his ear. He nodded then looking directly at Maan addressed him in the native tongue.

“Are you both married?”

“Yes we are.” Maan asserted without as much as batting an eyelid. At the same instance he seized Geet’s arm and tucked it snugly through his.

“Children?”

“Uh…no.”

“Expecting?” The man’s wife broke in.

Maan shot an inquiring glance at Geet.

“No!” She vehemently shook her head while trying frantically to free herself. His hold just wouldn’t give.

“You don’t like children?” The woman muttered in a disapproving tone.

“We do...” Maan laughed. He seemed to be having a gala time, “…and we’ll probably have at least a couple sometime along the line.” He directed a sly grin at Geet, “till then it’s going to be a prolonged honeymoon." He drawled; "am I right sweetheart?"

She was at a loss to respond. The look in his eyes had rendered her whole body deliriously numb.
