Lack of promotions and weak plotline were the reasons. In fact Padmaavat was always in the news coz of the Karni Sena controversies and Shahid was highlighted just like DP and Ranveer. Even the trailer included Shahid's footages more than Deepika's and equal to Ranveer's, you can't deny that.
