It's common gossip. KRK posted a few days ago that the Pandeys live in Mannat with SRK and Gauri and that they wouldn't even have a home if SRK wasn't providing for them.
It's not true but this kind of gossip floats around. Everyone in put down in subtle ways and then they in turn do the same to people below their level. The Pandeys are looked upon slyly as lower level hangers-on who rely on the Khans. The Pandeys themselves look down on others for not having a nice car or not being able to get their daughter into Le Bal and things like that.
Nobody is spared. The super-rich also subtly look down on each other. The business people think actors and models are trashy. The less rich think the businessmen are crooks and evil and hoarding their money.
Middle class people are no different. They also wear certain brands because they don't want to be confused with the poor who shop at Walmart. There are lots of subtle things every class does to separate themselves from those below them.
