As the movie is in Netflix now, finally watched it ..
The film as a whole was entertaining and even though the subject was controversial, the writers handled it so well, it was more about a child's acceptance in her family and it can happen with anyone, straight or homosexual.

This movie also reminded me of Kapoor and sons (one of the rare gems of recent times) where the subject was similar and just how sweety wants acceptance from her father, Rahul wanted his mother's acceptance. But ELKDTAL seemed more like a fairy tale, where Rajkumar plays the definite hero and makes it very very easy, infact it only took him one play to get sweety her much deserved communication with her dad. I guess the writers needed this movie to be on a more realistic ground. In kapoor and sons, the situations were more real and natural compared to ELKDTAL.

But I really liked Anil kapoor's character, his dreams of being a chef and how he could not pursue his passion because of his mother and still went ahead with his business.

Now, the biggest problem this movie had was Sonam as sweety ... I felt so bad for the child sweety whereas Sonam was just bland, she was delivering sweety's lines and i felt nothing for her. The only connection of the entire struggle of sweety's homsexuality was only felt because of the child actress who played younger sweety. This movie should not have flopped, because a movie like Kapoor and Sons with a similar subject and a lesser accepted pakistani actor as the lead was accepted and was a hit too, and here they had such a great combination of Rajkumar and Anil kapoor and yes Juhi too, how natural Juhi was in the movie. Juhi and Anil kapoor does a great job and their scenes are so likable. Rajkumar was coming from back to back hits and he is always known to act well and he did his part well too. But sadly the central character was sweety and sonam was awful, her dialogue delivery is just so bad and why is her laugh so fake and cringe worthy? If they would cast someone expressive and a better actress as Sweety, this film would be a commercial success, Sonam looked pretty and that was all about her.

I wonder would the makers cast sonam had she not been Anil's daughter? It is a genuine question because when they made the movie, didn't they see that the movie was so likable yet the actress could just not connect as sweety.

I liked the movie. It was sweet.

And I kinda agree with you. The most emotions I felt was thru sweety's diary, when Anil is standing there at the end of the play and child Sweety calls him out from glass box.

Sonam was good in some scenes like when she interacts with Kuhu for the first time and her face shows attraction towards Kuhu. Though her acting leaves lot to desire when it comes to delivering dialogues. It's difficult to empathize with her.

Yes the glass box scene was so well acted, Anil kapoor and the little girl were so convincing. The movie was a nice attempt and even i liked it.

Sonam blew away one of her best opportunities to prove her critics wrong. her acting was below average, and nobody, no writer should ever write a scene where her character has to giggle or laugh, she sounds awful in those giggly scenes.

I watched the movie too.
I had major problems with how the movie was made. Though it was a decent watch , I felt the story could have been told in a better way.

And Sonam was definitely the worst part of the movie. Her crying scenes were the worst. She did not make me feel for sweety at all. Wish they had taken a better actress who could have pulled it off. Sonam was plain bad.

Anil Juhi were the best part of the movie. They were lovely.

Kapoor and Sons movie was more about family dynamics than a "coming out" story! ...
As for Ek ladki .. we watched it just recently and like many stated in the review thread it was a half-baked product! ... Too much focus on Anil-Juhi and RKR character ... RKR character didn't need as much screen time! ... Also taking someone like Sonam for such a movie was a huge mistake .. she is a weak actor so it was hard to feel for her! ... I was disappointed that story didn't focus on Kuhu or their struggle .. It was too easy for Kuhu to notice Sweety .. also making Kuhu a Muslim?! .. Wow .. I was more interested to know how did that happen.. I mean her family or religion reaction .. how she came to terms with her sexuality .. It would have been worth an effort to focus more on these two than Anil, Juhi and RKR (-even if they were great in their respective roles) ... Little girl was wonderful fosho ... but even there it was shown too easily how she recognized herself to be different (-I would think it would take a lot more than that to realize you're a lesbian)!

Overall good concept but horrible execution and struggling acting by FL!

The story seemed too easy on eyes, the way Anil watches a play and accepts his daughter's homosexuality is far from what might happen in real.

Sonam's crying scenes and even her confrontation scene was just awful, this character needed a better actress and even if not a known name, a better actress could make the movie and the character more watchable.

Juhi's character was one of the best things of this movie, I loved her scenes especially with Anil⭐️

The film is garbage
And it's because there is no character arc and no complexity.
First of all the main character is herself in background most of the movie.
We are introduced with anil ,but he come as more jovial than anyone else and willing to accept even before he gets to know , which is at the climax and is resolved easily just by reading her diary and play, let there be complexity , rejection , confrontation and completion, the whole thing come in foreground in last 20 mins and resolved asap.
The brother character is introduced as someone who loved her sister more than anything but changed due to her being homosexual, but that character doesn't change , he don't accept her by the end , remains homophobic and is only silent coz of their dad.

The aunties and all seemed like be characters who would part in this but all are forgotten in the end.
Half baked character , and all the film was damp squib.
