Right now he is the biggest showman of Bollywood, whether u like it or not. It took him years of networking, manipulation, asslicking to reach where he is now.

Well you don't become powerful when you start your career. You become powerful after working hard for few years. Even SRK wasn't powerful when he started his career. Besides hard working, you also have to make smart move, which KJo seems very smart at. He worked with big stars and talented actors in the 90's and early 2000's like SRK, Kajol, Rani, Preity, Kareena, HR, etc. SRK and Kajol mostly made him famous. He recreated their onscreen chemistry after DDLJ in KKHH. Then, he made KKKG, KHNH, KANK and My Name is Khan with SRK. All these movies made him famous. I have to say he is very good at making connection with the right people that benefited him and he have very good marketing strategy. Also, Koffee with Karan made him popular too. People got to know him better from that show and other shows that he hosted. Top of that, he is the son of late Yash Johar who was one of the biggest producer and director in BW. He is also nephew of Yash Chopra. So all these factors made him powerful.

Seriously though, this dude makes it his business to know other people's business. I'm sure he has plenty of of dirt on everyone, and they know it. With that and his PR/blind items/leaked info tactics, it's enough to convince people not to put up too much resistance where he is concerned.

He had those genuine Blockbusters with SRK- Kajol, but in recent past hes produced mostly medium/low budget hits but his PR projected those as superhits. Through his talk show and presence on TV and various other platforms he makes sure to always be in the news. Actually Kangana calling him the Movie Mafia gave his image a big boost, since then hes actually perceived as the Head Honcho of BW. KJo feeds on publicity and hype, even negative publiciy is good publicity for him.

As pointed out, KJo is a master manipulator, a brilliant filmflammer who has successfully deluded people into believing that he's huge. Negative publicity boosts his image and makes him look like a mafia who controls the industry.

He is not powerful but a good businessman. Certain things he nailed is networking, associating himself with successful franchise, good conversationalist, scope for jobless people to give them job, wide range of visibility in industry i mean he is everywhere movie, tv, reality show judge, chat show host, award function presenter, Youtuve radio show and god knows what?
