I was extremely disappointed the other night when I heard on television that each player was awarded about 58 lakhs on the Indian cricket team (I confirmed this amount from one source, but the source is not very reliable, so if I am wrong, then please overlook the amount).

Don't get me wrong I enjoy cricket and I really appreciate the players. But I strongly believe that all this money could have gone to charity instead. There are so many poor and needy people in India and we have so many other problems we could have used up this money for improvement of our country.

Yes, I agree these players do deserve to be rewarded for their efforts. But they all have other sources of income as well (i.e. advertisements) and they should be given money, but not in such large amounts, because a few years down the road I cannot imagine how much more they will start demanding.

I really think we should consider the condition of our country before giving off money seriously there are so many people who aren't even employed, live on streets and cannot even afford money to get food. We have way too many problems on hand and we cannot afford to give off large sums of money. What are your thoughts on this subject?

i totally agree with you! agreed, cricket is a very popular sport in India...but why all the money to them..they're are other sports as well to give the money and fame to..why only cricket? and there's soo many better ways to spend all that money..i mean if u are going to be giving a bonus to a cricket player, give it..but in such HUGE amounts 😕 i dont understnd that....im pretty sure India is a country that is needing money to help itself modernize and help its country become a friendlier enviornment...y is all this money being wasted by giving it to cricket players? 😕 use it to help the poor, to build more useful buildigns (schools for poor or any neighbohood, hospitals, medicine, science, books...etc.) use it for anythign! but why soooo much to 1 cricket player???? 😕

I think you guys are forgetting basic economics or marketing. The simple thing is that noone gives you the amount you demand, same for the cricketers. It's all about how badly people want to see their face and how much they are willing to pay for it. Based on that desire BCCI makes it's riches and obviously shares it with it's players. Now you can't blame the cricketers cos you and millions other get hooked to their TV set whenever they play. If all of us can cut out that desire you'll automatically see the values of these players plummeting.

I am a huge fan of cricket and cannot get enough of it. Although, I would love to see it more of a sport than a business. All the hype surrounding cricket, worshiping the players and the expenditures really irk me. However, I agree with souro, we have no one to blame but ourselves. It is economics, if there was no demand there would be no supply. The day we treat cricket just like a sport played by ordinary mortal men it will make a world of difference.

You brought up a good point. But at the end of the day I still feel its the BCCI that decides the amount to pay to these players. My complain is about the amount (58 lakhs). I really felt that 58 lakhs to each player was a ridiculously large sum and felt they could have paid a much lower amount. You're right the cricketers never exactly demanded for 58 lakhs and I think even they were well aware that it was a huge amount.

I really don't think all the hype about cricket would go down in a few years. We just give this sport a lot of importance. And as you mentioned the more the demand for these faces and the game the more the amount the BCCI will pour on them. And if we have 58 lakhs now, then somehow I doubt it with all the hype these players will settle for anything less in the future. They would definitely want a much higher pay. Can they go strike?

I have a question to ask you, why do you think the BCCI paying the players a sum of 58 lakhs each is a bad thing?? Cos as far as I understand BCCI is the employer and the players the employee. So, if BCCI didn't pay that amount it in no way means that all those money would have been put into charity work, it would have only made the BCCI's purse heavier. You can't expect to make money out of someone and yet not share your profits with them. Moreover, BCCI is a private body not a govt. organisation, so all the more reason they'd not have shared their wealth to uplift other sports.

Do you complain when the Hollywood producers pay some of their actors and actresses $30 mn for a single film. It's also grossly unjustified in that sense. But the producer knows he'll make several times more just cos s/he is starring in that film. He might refuse to pay that amount but then the actor will work for someone else who'll pay a higher amount. And even if all the producers came together and decided to pay not more than a certain amount, it'll only mean that they'd make even more profit, for you can rest assured that no way are these producers going to ask the theatre owners to reduce the ticket prices cos they suddenly felt that the stars and they themselves are making too much money.

Before anything, we are responsible for everything and it's us who have decided to pay any amount to just watch that piece of entertainment.

What do you mean by ' the money can be put to a better use'???The players are helping the BCCI make all those loads of money and what's wrong in getting back a micro part of it in return????Like Souro said, its not like otherwise BCCI is going to distribute all that money amongst the needy...😕

Its like questioning why a software engineer makes sacks of money while a rickshaw puller barely manages with a pocket change, inspite of the fact that the effort put in was many fold...

Who said life is fair...

One more thing, irrespective of our financial conditions, all of us have equal opportunity...No one is forcing those poor and needy to stay that way...There is no denying that its a uphill task for them, but still they have only themselves to complain about, for their poverty...just because some people decided to take it easy, doesn't mean that the hard workers should be punished and not be rewarded with what they deserve...😕Just wanted to mention that...
