So I saw Gully Boy. And a couple of other movies of Alia.

She still annoys me because it seems like KJo hands things to her on a platter, but after GB, I got to thinking. She has neither the face nor the figure of a quintessential Bollywood diva. She has little screen presence. What she has is talent. In spades.

Would Bollywood have been welcoming to her? I doubt it. KJo might have shoved her down the audience's throats , but without him, she and the audience would've lost out. I'm going to assume he was doing his part to ensure talent succeeded in spite of all odds.

PS. He still comes across as an arrogant snob. IMO, he didn't need to malign the competitors to build her up,

Alia has a good work ethic and is a treat to watch

But I think she doesn't have the aura of a star, and people don't really appreciate her talent as much as they should. I suspect it's because she doesn't have the trappings of a star- beauty, screen presence, charm etc.( though she is cute and bubbly, these qualities are present in other actresses like Parineeti in higher dosage).

KJO backing her has nothing to do with her talent IMO. He promotes all nepo products and is highly biased. He would do anything for his friends like Kareena n Alia.

The trophy girlfriends, wives, that fans of Male sport stars,Film stars want to see, are either 6 feet tall supermodels-or someone who is fabulously rich and famous-much above them.

That reflects in Showbiz business patriarchal mindset.

All the top heroines since decades have been stunners,good dancers,or had sex appeal and glamour.

If not any of the above,the actress has to be a terrific talent..even then others will be picked over her.

Alia seems to be a terrfic actress.but when her male co-stars get bigger-They will want someone who makes THEM look hotter.

Raazi,GB, are great films for her.I will still give kalank a chance.There are 4/5 other stunners and performers.Will the pint sized Alia in her big lehengas overshadow others?

As you said the only thing going for Alia apart from getting best of the best scripts carefully curated for her to showcase her acting ability is her talent. (She is a decent actress but she is not the goat some people and media hype her to be). She is not beautful, lacks screen presence, have no star quality, have no oomph what so ever.

If she had debuted a decade or so ago she would have been outright rejected by the audience. It is just that she debuted in a time where good content can make a movie a hit. also she or her mentor is smart enough to know her limitations hence only get her roles suited for her looks and skill set only. Roles tailor- made for her. She is definitely not going to be a versatile actress because of her looks and lack of star quality.

My theory is the audience will reject her the minute a more prettier, more glamourous actress with good acting chops and immense screen presence come in to the scene. Indian audience have always been more enamoured by beauty, screen presence, dancing skills of actresses more than talent.

Kalank is a big budget film, Varun is going through low phase. Upar se Sona, ARK, Madhuri... Jinke har movie pit ahi hai... Toh iss combo ka pehli piti hui movie shayad Kalank hone wali hai.
