Why Cheat India Movie Review Quicker: Electrifying Emraan Hashmi Tricks You Into His Charm!

Why Cheat India Movie Review Quicker: The movie starts with Rakesh Singh (Emraan Hashmi) narrating the tale of a scholar student Satyendra Dubey. Rakesh leads a group of people who make sure that people with money get the degree.

After a heroic entry in a theatre, Rakesh gets close to Satyendra aka Satu and convinces him to writes exams for those who rich students aren't able to clear them on their own. Amidst the pressure, Satu breaks down and an incident leads to build up the curiosity for the second half.

The story, though heard many-a-times, intrigues your interest in it. Hashmi's electrifying presence and few entertaining dialogues mould the story well in the first half. Till now, the story just builds the grey shade of Rakesh's side. The pre-interval moment gives a hint of Rakesh getting a reality check and that's where the makers will try to cash-in through the second half.

Why Cheat India Movie Review: A Flawless Exercise In Guileless Storytelling

A film that's pointless not just because it seems enamoured by the conscienceless crooks driving the nation's coaching-class culture, but also because it has no idea whether Emraan Hashmi is playing a hero or a villain
Why Cheat India Movie Review

Director: Soumik Sen

Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Snigdhadeep Chatterjee, Shreya Dhanwanthary

Have you ever seen a movie that is soaggressively daft that it's too smart for you? The kind of self-obsessed, tone-deaf, overwrought corruption po*n that believes that showing dishonest people in a hopeless system automatically makes them the heroes? The sort of morally warped, star-worshipping, formula-pandering anti-narrative that spends 118 out of 120 minutes romanticizing the machinery of cheating only to tell us that cheating is correct and India is doomed? The kind of unimaginative, unoriginal social-message drama that makes you feel like you're a masterful fortune teller (scamster enters, starts empire, becomes rich, tragedy, grows conscience) within the first three minutes? Me neither. But if you can get past the grammatical wrongness of the title of a film that is ironically all about the awfulness of our education system wait, is that deliberate? you just might.

Why Cheat India is pointless on many levels not just because it seems enamoured by the conscienceless crooks driving the nation's coaching-class culture, but also because it has no idea whether Emraan Hashmi is playing a hero or a villain. It begins as a B-grade Laakhon Mein Ek (a rare show that authentically depicts the curse of the academic rat-race), outlining the life of one particular "scholar in Jaunpur. This kid, Santu, who might otherwise easily pass off as a teen-aged Rahul Bose, passes the engineering entrance exam with flying colours and fulfils his domineering father's wishes. Mostly because he is more expressive than Rahul Bose. He has a pretty sister who has eyes for Santu's shady mentor' Rakesh Singh (Rocky, because Emraan is cool like that), a man who beats up bullies in a Gupt matinee show and pulls Santu into a racket that's simple enough to understand in the first half; the boy is paid to impersonate bad students (remember: bad students are always rich and fat) in their entrance exams so that they score top marks. Intelligent Santu is Rakesh's golden goose.

Simultaneously, a thread detailing Rakesh's family life (of course he has daddy issues) unravels in a parallel dimension of Bollywood storytelling. At one point, he takes his position in front of a harmonium during a wedding function but belts out the voice and lyrics of a song that is more suited to an erotic romp on the beach. Meanwhile, all is not well with Santu. How can we tell? Because he now sports a goatee. A goatee is to Hindi movie males what cigarettes are to the females.

The racket in the second half is so complicated banks, honest cops, stringers, politicians, Mumbai, hotel rooms, sex workers keeping the golden-goose nerds happy (?) in hotel rooms that I'm not sure even the filmmakers understand it. Incessant split-screening suggests that they think it is something very clever. In fact, I was convinced I had walked into the wrong cinema hall after the interval.

I'd be under house arrest in Switzerland if I had a tax-free penny for each time a film stars Hashmi as a smug Robin-Hood-style con artist trying to dupe the system while magically producing a lilting Bhatt-style ballad with a heroine that appears out of nowhere only so that he can kiss her completely out of context and still end up being a knight in murky armour. To be fair, Hashmi likes wearing a moustache and a shirt. His face has that natural "I'm unreliable and I love grinning because you trust me becauseI'm unreliable look about it. While it can't be pleasant to know that directors can only visualize you as a professional liar, it's not all that bad. Look on the brighter (darker) side: He pulls off a better Azhar here than he did in Azhar. Which makes Why Cheat India more of a biopic tagline.

WHY CHEAT INDIA MOVIE REVIEW
Critic's rating 3.0/5
Rakesh Singh (Emraan Hashmi) runs a scam wherein he gets brilliant students give engineering entrance exams in proxy for not-so-brilliant but rich students for a fee. Sattu (Snighadeep Chatterjee) is one such star pupil that he uses in his schemes. Sattu's elder sister Nupur (Shreya Dhanwanthary) is smitten by Rakesh and a romance of sorts grows between the two, though he's too much of a businessman to let emotions hold sway. The pressure of studying for his own engineering course and writing exams for others gets to Sattu. The easy money takes its toll as well. He begins doing drugs and starts hiring prostitutes. Sattu gets rusticated by his college in the process but Rakesh sets him up with a fake degree and gets him a job in Qatar. Mounting police pressure makes Rakesh shut shop in Lucknow and move to Mumbai. He's after a bigger game now and soon sets up a network there as well. All seems to be going hunky dory for him, till one day his past catches up with him and his house of cards comes tumbling down...

It's a known fact that every year millions give entrance exams for just thousands of seats. Students pay heavily to study in coaching classes specialising in targeting a rank. Question papers get routinely leaked. The director is attempting to question a system which has flaws and it's inherent corrupt practises. Don't expect Why Cheat India to do a serious expose on the grim reality though. It just skims the surface, using the subject to make a masala entertainer full of one-liners designed to win the claps of the audience.

Emraan Hashmi has made a career out of playing an OTT anti-hero and is in his element here yet again. He makes you believe in his character's angst, especially in the first half. If only director Soumik Sen had kept the tone of the first half intact in the second half as well. While the first half is logically constructed, all logic goes for a toss in the second. Proceedings get more ludicrous by the minute. The twist, when it comes, is so convoluted that you can't help but shake your head in disbelief.

What works for the film is the acting. Emraan and newbie Shreya have done a well-enough job and share enough of a chemistry for you to be interested in the outcome of their old-school romance. Emraan knows how to deliver punch dialogue in style and is given plenty of lines to amply exercise his talent. The film is supposed to be a satire on the education system but the bite comes when the film touches upon interpersonal relationships. Thank You For Smoking (2005) exposed the lies of the tobacco industry. Why Cheat India starts off with similar intentions but ends up as yet another potboiler. And in glorifying Emraan Hashmi's character, it has ironically added to the problem it addresses...
