To be honest, I don't really think Kunal has to regret or redeem himself given the circumstances here.
Mauli is a wonderful person no doubt there. But sometimes you can't just love someone no matter how great of a person she is but can fall in love with a rather flawed person hopelessly. I don't see the reason why Ishaan has to be praised so much (I am referring to several other threads). It's not that he has done something great. He just loves Mauli & is doing everything in his power to please her. There's nothing extraordinary about it that he has to be constantly praised & compared with Kunal.
There is a Thai movie called Yes or No: Come back to me which dealt with the issues of a young couple with a lot more maturity & reality. There is a dialogue of the 3rd angle that was she wrong to fall in love with someone already committed. And the answer was she wasn't wrong. But it was just bad timing that she came later. And sometimes no matter how good you are, you can't be the chosen one.
The same goes for Mauli & Nandini here. I, well no one really knows what was the thing that attracted Kunal to her but he was very sure about his love. And frankly I think instead of living in a loveless relation & cheating his wife, it was better to divorce Mauli anyway.
Frankly if it was only Kheer or Physical intimacy that DISTRACTED him that would actually make him worse because then there would always be a possibility of cheating Maui even if Nandini wasn't in the picture. But right now at least it's clear that he was truly in love with Nandini & for that I would have let him be only if he hadn't abused Mauli mentally.
If Mauli still can't find peace it's not wrong or impossible & neither has anything to do with self-respect Its just her emotion that she is stuck with a person's memory who wasn't right for her. Kunal has nothing to do with it or anything related to it.
The only thing I personally expected from Kunal is just the clarification that why did he fall out of love. He could then live with Nandini or who so ever.
