Shah Rukh Khan Bollywood star and India's icon turned 40 on Wednesday. Cruising from obscurity onto the world stage the man who has done the impossible of dethroning the great Amitabh Bachchan epitomises a life that has invigorated India.
"Only sex and Shah Rukh sells in Bollywood," says sex siren Neha Dhupia. Everyone has supported her to the hilt, as far as the latter is concerned. King Khan has proven it while delivering brilliant performances one after another. The energetic Khan brings the screen alive everytime he is on screen. The amount of energy he brings to the silver screen is awe-inspiring, to say the least. The screen is on fire whenever he appears is stating the obvious.
Love him or hate him, one thing is for sure, you can never ignore the charismatic Shah Rukh Khan. 'You never win the silver, you only lose the gold,' says the 'Badshah', and he definitely lives by the phrase. Shah Rukh lives by his own rules.
Defying all stereotypes, conventions and established formulae, the magician has mesmerised the audiences world over, ever since his tryst with celluloid began.
Khan never follows the trodden path. Exploring and experimenting comes naturally to him. That's what he has been doing since his starting days on small screen.
They say: boob tube actors can never succeed in the big and manipulative world of Bollywood. Starting with small screen, the man is today virtually ruling Bollywood. Never since the Big B, has any other actor had such a terrific hold over the box-office. Because, whether one likes it or not, it's the box-office which decides the fortunes of an actor in filmdom and Khan has been delivering for Bollywood Inc time and again.
After his stint with the boob tube, he ventured to conquer the silver screen and took Bollywood by storm. Shah Rukh is not shy of calling himself the best in business. He dared to experiment during the early stages of his career. After a decent start with movies like Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Deewana and Chamatkaar, he started the trend of anti-hero in Hindi cinema. He virtually played with fire, as no leading actor in the history of Bollywood had done it. But here was the man who wrote his own rule book for celluloid success.
His anti-hero avataar left audiences spell-bound in movies like Darr, Baazigar, Ram Jaane and Anjaam. The film critics who had written an obituary of the lean and thin looking simple guy as another kid on the block, were proven more than wrong. But this was just the beginning of an unparalleled golden journey in the history of Bollywood.
But then came role reversal! With movies like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dil To Pagal Haiand many more, King Khan created the lovable character 'Raj', who made the female audiences, irrespective of age, going weak in the knees.
These are just a few in the long list of bo hit movies. Its not so much that his movies sell as his name sells. He has converted himself into a brand no less in importance as some mega companies in India Inc. He struck gold whatever he touched. Be it endorsing various brands or art cinema. For him there is no such thing called art or commercial cinema, it's cinema that matters to him.
Shah Rukh is no doubt a deadly cocktail. The King Khan is a potent combination of a great actor with a terrific global star appeal. Proof? His last venturePaheli directed by veteran Amol Palekar is India's entry to the Oscars. Also, film-maker Karan Johar is struck with Shah Rukh's overseas appeal. He's awe-struck with his amazing fan following overseas.
There's something about him that can't be put in words. The charisma, the enigmatic appeal of SRK deserves words that are hard to find.
Khan has a virtual monopoly over various film awards. In fact, it's no secret that many of his contemporaries have started skipping the award functions because as usual, he always walked away with the laurels.
Last but not the least, Big B, the legendary Amitabh Bachchan, himself has crowned SRK, "Shah Rukh is the real Badshah of Bollywood". Do we need anything more than that as the cinema aficionado?
More than touching the hearts and minds of the all generations as an actor, SRK is also the face of a new, confident and successful India. Having captured the globe, he will no doubt scale new peaks. He is galvanising India's GenNext to ever greater feats of achievements across the spectrum of human activities.
His show is a light for Indians who are carrying starry dreams, having no godfather to ride on.
Three cheers to the Badshah on his birthday. Carry on the good show Shah Rukh Khan.
