Cut out the circus

Kaveree Bamzai
March 1, 2008

There was a moment in this year's Oscar telecast which many thought was a snooze. Scott Rudin, giddy with excitement at having won an Oscar for Best Picture for No Country for Old Men thanked his partner, John Barlow. "Honey, without you this would be hardware."

Now just picture an awards night in Mumbai, one of those where actors perform on stage to their hit songs, and then feign surprise when they win. Imagine such candour about their sexual preferences beamed live to a global audience (although later the squeamish Academy dropped it from the transcript). More than ever this year the 80th Academy Awards were about honouring the movies, no matter the country of their origin, in the most parochial nation in the world.

As the film awards season kicks off this summer, there's much Bollywood could learn from them. Hollywood keeps its acrobatics for its summer blockbusters. On Oscar night, it chooses to present to the world a sedate industry, one that means business, that makes art and that celebrates intellect.

Our awards nights are exactly the opposite. Bollywood stars use these nights as rehearsals for their mega concerts which they depart to in droves when the summer peaks. The actors twirl to songs from their own films, or if they don't have enough of a body of work, pluck some actor from the past and massacre his hard work in the name of a tribute.

The hosts usually veer between sarcasm at the expense of others or embarrassing gush. Bollywood's creative core, that magical thing that attracts crowds and binds communities, is usually a sidelight. Simply, while Hollywood chooses to appear adult on Oscar day—despite some precariously held together gowns that are only for senior viewing—Bollywood indulges its infantile self during awards season. It's like a frat party where everyone is a clown prince.

What's the solution? Simple. Scrap the multiple awards ceremonies. Media moguls and minor industrialists who wish to share the spotlight with the stars can simply call them to their weddings, birthdays or even naming ceremonies. Television channels which present these film nights can just show us a Shah Rukh Khan blockbuster.

As for the talent who get recognition, they can get themselves one homegrown awards ceremony—it will prevent them from hankering after what Daniel Day Lewis called the "handsomest bludgeon in town".

And the audience sitting at home? They can just go to the circus

😆 😆 but i do love all the naach gana that goes in the filmfare. such a true representation of majority of the films our bollywood churns out 😉

i wld love to have a dress code thou. it's an eyesore seeing a couple of heros dressed in formal suits and rest showing up as if they r going down to the pizza hut or kakey da dhaba for a quick snack rather than an award ceremony 😊 bollywood women, i feel, do a better job of dressing up (or down 😉 ) than men on the whole. 😊

I could not make anything from that article. What is the writer trying to say? But I agree these days Bollywood awards (be it any) have become a Nach Gaana show. How about having some live acting performances, live singing, live orchestra..apart from dance performances. Tab aayega mazaa. Plus humare technicians ko aur jyada credit milna chahiye.

Aajkal to awards sirf ek group ko hi milta hai which included SRK, Chopras, Johars, Kapoors, Bachchans etc. TallyHo can you please post the link also?

I agree...i would love to see say Sonu or shreya singing their hits of teh year to a live orchestra...and techinicians are just sidelined and paid lip service...

Why is the author trying to compare Filmfare vs Oscars.. hello? Its like trying to compare hollywood vs bollywood movie.

Don't know if anyone noticed in filmfare awards show but SRK did try to use his brand of sick humor about his fascination with KJO when he commented on Kareena's name tattoed in hindi on Saif's arm as not Kareena but Karan. 😕

Agree with Gauri here that the dances by Kareena, Deepika and Akshay were fabulous. It is sad that the only stars in the audience are the ones getting awards and if SRK is nominated in the best actor category then he always gets it. 😉

Did you see SRK's wife Gauri? 😆 I heard she paid $5999 for the "designer" gown. 😕 I think Kareena and Karisma looked great.

The dress that Gauri is wearing is really pretty...another model wore this same outfit someone posted the link in the bollywood section (i could not find the link) Gauri is pretty.... she looked fab when she came towards the end in OSO, but I don't understand why does she opt for oil based foundation she looks nice when she is not over dressed. Recently she was on the cover of Vogue.... but I think they did a good job with the air brush... 😳

Karishma and Kareena both looked pretty but I also liked Riddhima (Rishi Kapoors daughter) she is a stunner. 😛

I like the Filmfare Awards - warts, warped humour, repeat winners and all 😛 What's with people - why do they always find Hollywood a better act?? 😕

@ Lighty - I wanted to wipe the lipstick off Gauri Khan's face! Don't care about the gown, but that shade of lipstick just doesn't become her!!!
