The panditji said that the male is needed for the pooja. So just curious to know, can a female really not lead a pooja? Then what happens to ladies who are widowed, divorcee or unmarried, can they not perform any pooja at home? Or was this another cinematic liberty that the CV's took?

Females can definitely lead, perform and participate in a puja. I think this puja was a couple puja, so she needed her partner. Don't know what Nandini was thinking for her to set up a couple puja. I think it's related to her prayer that she wants her and Kunal to be happy forever. She doesn't care about anyone else. 😕

For a couple pooja, pair has to be there.
One needs to explicitly mention the reason for Pooja. Certain rules apply for certain type of pooja rituals.
My mausi does havan daily all alone but when it's about family pooja where couple need to sit together, she sits with the husband.
Ladies can very well lead, perform pooja alone if they want too but that has to be stated earlier before inviting the pandits or if emergency comes then ladies have to clearly state it that they wish to do it all alone and certaib rituals will be skipped rather than keeping pandits waiting infintely like Nandini.
