"My songs in Jannat are not completely original" - Pritam

By Subhash K. Jha, February 28, 2008 - 12:46 IST

Pritam never denies his sources of inspiration. Whether it is the successful songs in Awaraapan or Race, he accepts the inspirational charges with grace. But the charge that the chartbuster 'Yeh Ishq Haaye Jannat Dikhaye' in Imtiaz Ali's Jab We Met is ripped off from Indonesian singer Anggun's French number 'Etre une femme' has the habitually-calm composer frothing in indignance.

"I've never denied the sources for my songs. So why should I deny it now? But the fact is, I had never heard Anggun's song when I composed the song in Jab We Met. I don't know the song myself. My friend who's a keyboard player had the groove programmed. I liked the groove and I composed my tune on it. I composed the song in front of so many people. I can guarantee the melody isn't anyone's but my own. I must admit the groove is similar to the one in my song. But that's it. And too to is totally unintentional. Not a note in the rest of my song sounds like Anggun's tune. And if anyone can prove I've copied her song I'm ready to stop composing songs forever.

Catching his breath Pritam admits, "In fact, let me tell you my songs in Mukesh Bhatt's forthcoming film, Jannat, which I had claimed were completely original are no longer so. Some parts of the soundtrack now have borrowed sounds. But 'Yeh Ishq Haye' in Jab We Met is an absolute original."

Ok , this is what he claims .. but juts give a listen to these two tracks , both by indonesian singers and judge whether it cud possibly be a coincidence that his hit song Yeh Ishq from JWM is similar to these tunes.

Err...
I have a slightly different take on it..

Honestly, How many of us wud have listened to That Indonesian song ,Or ya Ghali or The song that inspired kya mujhe pyaar hai..

Bt we all agree they are some amazing tunes..And he has never denied the source, Infact he sometimes Openly mentions the other song...

Now this way, He gives a chance to extend the frontiers of music, share that melody with a larger group of ppl

As long as they are given deserved credit and The original composers dont have a problem ,I dont think he deserves punishment

Well in this case i was talking specifically abt his insistence that the yeh Ishq track is his original composition and to me its quite obvious that it is not.

But anyhow even if he never denied the source of his inspiration its another matter alotgether if he doesnt oficially give credit to the originals. Im not singling out Pritam its just the whole thing genarally.,.

Even though we might not think its such a wrong thing becos we'v got used to this practice it doesn't change the fact that its legally wrong. He's profiting and taking credit from what is actually someone else's intellectual property. having recently read the subject id think anyone wud have a good case against him.

And the original composers wudnt always know of these liftings or know how to go abt getting a remedy for the infringement.

Persoanlly , i have no respect for his talent anymore though i admit his music is always good. admitting that the songs were copied only when ur accused isn the same as informing be4 hand on the cd or thru a statement that hes done so is the respectable way to go abt it.
