Eid Al Adha, also known as Eid Al Khabir or Bakri Eid, is an Islamic festival that falls on the 10th Day of the Holy Month of Dhul Al Hijjah, marking the end of the holy pilgrimage to Mecca done by millions of Muslims each year.
Eid Al Adha is a celebration to remember the sacrifice of the Prophet Ibrahim Alayi Salam did for Allah Subhanallah Wa Ta'Ala .
The Prophet saw in a dream that he was asked to sacrifice his son.
To prove his faith towards the Highest, Ibrahim AS was ready to sacrifice his son Ismail AS . At the moment he was about to kill his son, the Archangel Jibri'il replaced him by a lamb.
Eid Al Adha marks the end of Hajj, one of the five pillars in Islam that each Muslim should try to complete atleast once in his life. It's a time to be closer to the Almighty, seeking forgiveness, doing as much as prayers as possible and doing good deeds.
It's also a time to reflect on ourselves and to become better. During this time, pilgrims accomplish the acts of worship commanded and go to Mina where Ibrahim's AS sacrifice took place.
Each year, millions of Muslims go to Mecca to perform the journey of their lives.
The celebration starts with Eid prayer held at the Masjid till the sun rises and before Zhuhr prayer. Men, women and children wear their best clothes to perform the prayer.
Then, sacrifices of lambs, sheers, goats or veals or are done respecting the Sunnah. The thought of sacrifice can scare us as it has been a debate between many but Allah SWT have mentionned many animals in the Quran, each having a special importance. He orders us to respect and love them, as they give us our vital needs.
In Surah Al Nahl for example : "And the grazing livestock He has created for you; in them is warmth and [numerous] benefits, and from them you eat." (16.5)
"And they carry your loads to a land you could not have reached except with difficulty to yourselves. Indeed, your Lord is Kind and Merciful." (16.7)
Many Hadiths (words, quotes or sayings said by the Prophet Muhammad Rasullulah salla-l lahou 'alay-hi wa salam) show us the care we should give to animals.
According to Bukhari and Muslim, the Prophet Muhammad Rasullulah SWS strictly forbade to hurt animals. He also added : When you're about to slaughter an animal, do it in the best way and reassure the animal. Be careful at each gesture you will do. Use a sharp knife to kill and don't hurt the animal.
He also said that if you are merciful to them then the Lord will also be merciful at you (Thirmidi).
Many articles such as Guardian one or scientists accept the fact that halal slaughtering is more human than mechanical one.
Eid Al Adha is not only a festival of sacrifice, it's a celebration which brings millions of people together, where they eat together and share food together. It's a day which reminds us to be good to the needy ones and feed them, showing empathy and sympathy to them and bringing smiles and colors to their lives.
