The fact online world is filled with perverts, I think it is okay, actually recommended from my end to keep the gender hidden.
And it is completely upon a person to reveal it, hide it or alter it.

In this anonymous world does it matter whether the other person has a vagina or a penis??
It is about exchange of ideas and opinions, what has the gender identity to do anything with.
It is not like people are duping you of money, or it is a dating site, where true identity of the gender is necessary.
