so I have been watching bepannah only for a month or so but while I was zipping through all the initial episodes on voot, one of the things that struck is the impact of money on marriage and relationships. since it has been on my mind for a while now, thought I would post about it.

1. money can break down a marriage. yash and zoya's marriage disintegrates on large part because of money. yash is not able to communicate his financial situation and instead ends up confiding in pooja. that later leads to more closeness and finally affair. this is actually quite accurate in real life. did you know that a research study showed that one of the top reasons for a marriage breaking down is clashes over money? according to relationship experts, couples need to talk about how they are going to spend money, their priorities etc and come to a consensus. unfortunately, it is not something people are aware about and so many like zoya 1.0 have this la la land assumption that love will take care of everything and so don't actually talk to their spouse about this boring topic of money.

2. not being financial independent can make us crazy! look at mahi's stupid schemes. part of it was because she had no money of her own and so was angry at herself and the world. if sakshi had money, would she have leeched off aditya and stayed in that house even after pooja's death? lot of people plan for their children's education, their marriage but fail when it comes to saving for their own retirement. they just assume that the children will take care of them but this leads to lots of stress and in some cases, the families breaking apart. so lesson, always try to be financially independent and plan wisely!

3. money allows us to restart life. zoya was totally broken but one reason, she was able to restart and rebuild her life so quickly was because of waseem. assuming that he is some sort of businessman or something but he was wise in that he bought the house and put it in zoya's name. this means that zoya was able to stay in mumbai in a flat that actually belongs to her. if waseem had let yash put it in his name, then mahi and her mom would have pounced on the flat. even though it was zoya's money, they would never have given it to her.

also waseem put aside money for her and so she is able to re-start zosh events without debt and be financially independent. did waseem know that yash was no good and so was prepared for something to happen? maybe his father antenna was working overtime?

in real life, in addition to starting over, financial stress is a huge challenge. unfortunately, many women don't have money on their own and it is not like parents are able to support them either... so having that kitty and financial independence to make your own decisions is a must to face whatever challenges life throws at us...

so just some random thoughts about money that struck me while watching bepannah...

@mango_pudding you are absolutely right. Though money is not everything, you should have knowledge to deal with money as far as relationship goes. Love doesnt take care everything. When harsh realities of life face you, you need money. It's a fact.
True Aditya gave her the courage to fight it out, but Wasim too played an important part in making this Zoya 2.0. He gave the 5 crore to hoodas and on all possibility he would have closed the bank loan and then allowed his daughter to run the company. Zoya was efficient and she ensured profitability.

Yash I feel even at the time of marriage had nothing of his own and Wasim would have felt he neither have the capability and he is proven right. Yash only borrowed money and Pooja put Adi's money in a wrong candidate who had no clue how to handle it.

For Pooja also it was easy to give that 5 crore to yash because it was not her hard earned money. To know the value of money u need to earn it. Once you earn you understand the difficulty and learn wise use of it.

Both the ladies Zoya and Pooja didnt work. Hence both lived in la la land, craving for romance. Working, creating your identity, becoming financially independant to a great extend will allow you to come of la la land. And will also make you wary of people like yash.

Management of money and financial independance is part and parcel of a successful marriage.

thanks @meerahk - wasn't sure whether to post this because it is kind of a boring topic. hahahah.. not like swooning over great aditya is. 😆ahahhaha...

@shruthiravi - definitely pooja also lived in lala land. for all her mba credentials, her loan to yash wasn't based on proper financial assessment. instead, she just took advantage of aditya's trust in her and gave him the money. so aditya had every right to feel angry and betrayed when he found out...

and yash also lived in la la land -- did he really think that he was rich enough to maintain 2 households in 2 cities? either he should have made mahi and his mom move to mussoorie or he should have asked zoya to... so yea, all of them didn't have much financial sense and that led to all sorts of problems..

while it is not wrong to be want romance, we still need to have some common sense. and yea, love is great but the lack of money can also kill love. that is a sad fact of life. so good financial management is a must.

Very good post TM.
Even i used to live in lala land before marriage. I used to think if i get a loving person dt is more than enuf. Now i know how imp money is and even more so, if one partner is careless with regards to money. In Bepannaah, i feel all the 4 were careless when it came to money. What baffles me the most is Sakshi.

I agree...
Money is important and i have seen many marriages break apart or go rough becaise of financial issues..

But regard to sakshi doesn't she have a house of her home where she went off to live in between?
I think sakshi lives in hooda house only coz she considers adi her son ... or maybe not...
Mother in law can never take equal place of mom
I think ot is adis fault here he should let sakshi go or get a new house for sakshi .. he could also shift himself in a new home with sakshi but staying under one roof with parents n in laws is an insane desicion ... no one has energy fpr such every day drama

@anjaanichudi - yea sakshi baffles me as well. my impression of her is negative and I won't even be surprised if it is revealed later that she pushed pooja to marry aditya because of money. or if she turns out to pooja-yash murderer as well!

@zooni.blue - actually sakshi didn't seem to have a house to go to and was living in the orphanage and then later a hotel? have seen families in real life where both parents and in-laws stay (parents stay on ground floor, in-laws stay on another), as you said, there can be complications but it is possible to make it work.

what is really insane that sakshi stayed even after pooja's affair came out and she blamed aditya for pooja's decision to cheat. ummm, what? doesn't this woman have any dignity? just because aditya asks her to stay, she immediately stays even though anjana hates her? 😲 the only answer is that she had no money.

sakshi may have been similar to yash's mom in a way. she also had no money and no house and so was forced to go along with mahi's crazy schemes because they had no fallback.

with yash-pooja's deaths, both sakshi and yash's mom were in financial troubles.so yea big lesson - don't assume your kids will take care of you. be financially independent.

Nice Post. !!
Money really touches everything... Be it Mahi's greed for it (insurance) or Yash's impact over Pooja (5cr) destroying his marital life by randomly blaming Zoya for not being understanding. Which wasn't the real issue according to me and chose to bow out without dealing with it

thanks! :)

yash wasn't very financially smart but both he and zoya came from different worlds and so it felt like he was embarrassed to bring up how bad the finances were. zoya adored him and it looked like he was afraid to break that bubble and show himself to be a human with flaws. perhaps, he didn't really think that zoya would accept him for the flawed man he was whereas with pooja, he felt that he could be himself. hence the whole "friend" discussion etc...

also zoya came from a privileged background that she had no clue to how money worked. yash shared that he is having trouble finding another flat in bombay to rent and putting down the deposit and her solution is to buy a house. umm, what? the guy is struggling to pay the deposit and she wants him to buy a house? with what collateral? so zoya 1.0 was really quite clueless in that way. such a huge change from zoya 2.0 who haggles with her vendors over Rs. 2000. 😆
