Chapter 35: A melange of emotions: from the past, of the present and for the future

"Sahil, Sahil...Kaha ho??" Yelled Anika, panic now beginning to ring in her voice.

"Sahil!!!" Yelled Anika again. "Anika, clearly, he is not here. Why don't you call him?" Said Shivay. "I am, but this idiot, ... is not picking up." Said an exasperated Anika as she tried Sahil's number one more time. "Hello??...Hello, Sahil, Kaha ho tum??...Kya?? Joshi aunty ke saath...??? ... Kya? Theek hai aunty...thank you...Kal subhe mai aajati hoon." Said Anika as she hung up.

"Thank god! Sahil is safe and with Joshi aunty. Barish ke wajah se, he stayed back at aunty's house. Chalo, theek hai!" Sighed Anika in relief. "And here you were, about to call the cops on your brother." Huffed Shivay. "Your flair for histrionics never fails to surprise me." Said Shivay.

"Chalo Mr Oberoi, don't get cranky now. It will be a while before you can get yourself airlifted out of here, so we might as well pretend that we can tolerate each other." Said Anika.

"I don't care about you, I am completely fine with you." Said Shivay. He lied.

"Ouch!" Thought Anika.

"Fine. I am going to bring out power-cut supplies and then make arrangements for food. Please make yourself comfortable." Said Anika.

"Comfortable. What a joke!" Thought Shivay. Scanning the room, he took in as much as he could to know more about this enigmatic woman. The house was not much, about the size of a utility room in his mansion, yet it was more alive in these dim lights than even the brightest rooms in the OM. Color burst from cushions and drapes and mixed with the cluttered news papers and other house hold items. She wanted to decorate, he thought, but didn't have the time to follow through her plans. Lines of dust on the brass flower vases, and the wilting flowers bore testament to this fact. Mixed in with those odd papers were few technical manuals and some nuts and screws and wait,.. even a tiny screw driver. God alone knew what this crazy girl was up to. On a table next to the small wicker sofa he had occupied lay thick volumes of law books. If they were friends, he would have let her borrow the books from his library.

He was lost in these very thoughts, when Anika made an appearance again, with her clothes changed and a dry towel in one hand. "Mr Oberoi, dry yourself. Surely your clothes are not waterproof." Saying so Anika handed him the towel, and disappeared into the tiny room again.

Taking the towel gingerly in his fingers, sniffing it once and wrinkling his nose, Shivay proceeded to wipe the rain off himself.

Minutes later Anika emerged with candles and a small emergency lamp and set it on the table in front of Shivay. "Mr Oberoi, hand me the towel, I will take it out to dry." Said Anika. "Umm, No, let me hold onto it." Said Shivay. "Mr Oberoi, come on, if you are cold, I will give you a blanket. You don't have to drape the towel around your shoulders." Said Anika. "I am not cold" Said Shivay. "Umm, Ok. Is everything alright?" Asked Anika. "Wait, your hair is still wet, why don't you towel dry your hair?do you need help?" Asked Anika, moving towards Shivay. "Wait, I am fine, don't need your help." Replied Shivay. "Fine keep the towel. Can you ... Oh!!!...Mr Oberoi!..." began Anika half laughing, half horrified, "Is your...?" She spluttered, "What?No...No, nothing, its fine, really..." said an extremely embarrassed Shivay. "Sorry Mr Oberoi, I forgot to tell you about the glue on the sofa. It was from one of Sahil's many projects. How bad is the shirt?I can do basic sewing." Said Anika making a move to remove the towel. "No..Stop!" Said Shivay. "I don't want it mended, but if you want to help, get me something to wear. Maybe something from Sahil's clothes." Suggested Shivay. "Umm, Sahil is 13" said Anika bursting into a fit of giggles, "I will find you something." She assured him.

"Bloody designer shirt!" thought Shivay, "They took the concept of fine silk to a point where, fine gets ruined by glue. What nonsense!" He thought. "Wonder what I have to wear!" He wondered.

Again, Anika walked in within seconds and trying to maintain a straight face handed him a deep blue kurta. "This is bhaiya's. It is clean and it was the best he had. " saying so, she fingered the garment fondly and handed it to Shivay. "You can change here, I am off to the kitchen." She said and left promptly.

Sniffing the garment and relieved to detect the smell of naphthalene balls, he was assured that she at least tried to keep it clean. Knowing that it was the best he could do with in the current situation, Shivay quickly tugged it on and proceeded to dry himself.

Testing another chair for glue or other such crap, Shivay found a relatively safe place to sit on and use his phone. The rains were getting worse and the earliest flying clearance was for 6:00 am. He would have to reschedule his meeting with the group in NYC, but that could be done. He could swap them for the Japanese corporation. His mind was occupied with some numbers when Anika walked in and set a steel plate in front of him.

"Mr Oberoi, here is some Maggie..." began Anika, when the lights went out. Shivay could sense the panic set in within her almost instantly. He remembered the incident with her and the dark room from few days back. Instinctively he reached for her hand and found her take it in a strong vice like grip. "Its Ok Anika, let me light the candles, wait better to turn the emergency lamp first." He said and saying so turned the emergency light on. Reassured by the beams from the emergency light, Anika drew in a deep breath and her grip on Shivay's hand weaken.

"Honestly Anika, isn't the job of a lawyer all about dispelling the dark?" Asked Shivay. "From when did SSO become a poet?" Retorted Anika, slowly recovering her composure. "SSO..who...what?" Asked Shivay incredulously. "SSO..Shivay Singh Oberoi" explained Anika. "I got that!" Snapped Shivay. "Acha chalo eat Maggie before it goes cold." Said Anika. "Maggie, eww, no thanks, you eat it." Said Shivay. "What is eww about Maggie?" Asked Anika genuinely surprised.

"Do you know how much sodium, preservatives and refined crap is in this?" asked Shivay.

"And you know we all have to die one day right?" Asked Anika. "Whatever!" Said Shivay. "Chalo, I will eat all of it myself. Hot and spicy. I also added some extra masala on the side." Said Anika.

Picking up a spoon, Anika dug right into the hot Maggie, "Ummm...yummm" she said. Looking at her in the bluish white light beam, savoring food that smelled incredibly inviting, Shivay felt incredibly helpless. He would probably lose to her.

Pinky tossed and turned in bed and pretended to sleep for a full 20 minutes before she knew it was pointless. Try as much as she could, she could not suppress that tiny niggling voice in her mind. Eight years ago, she found out about her. The moment she lay eyes on her, she knew that there was something more to her. Her suspicions were confirmed when she let slip about how close she was to the family and to him. All the feelings of low self worth, that she battled back and bottled up, came gushing out. Pinky still remembered how she had binged on the samosas and ladoos at the party. Watching Pinky eat, she had remarked how it was apparent that Pinky loved food and wondered if Shivay was the same.

"No! It can't be." thought Pinky. "I can't let my feelings of low self worth resurface again!" She thought. "I won't let this affect me and all my relationships." She decided.

**********************************************************

Shakti sighed for one last time. Closing his eyes to meditate and settle his thoughts, Shakti began to concentrate on just that. Breathing in and out, invariably his mind went to the events of the day. "Something happened 8 years ago that affected them today. God! I must pray that things don't get worse." thought Shakti. "Did I do something to cause this?" He began to wonder. "No!." In fact 8 years back, he took one of the best decisions ever.

How could he forget that evening, when she came waltzing into his private study. Reminding of old times that she claimed to have moved on from, she wanted to be friends again. But he would have none of it as he told her plainly. Stating his love for Pinky and Shivay once and for all Shakti had shown her the door. And, that had been it, remembered Shakti. "Yes, I did the right thing. Thank God!" He thought once again and settled to meditate.

***********************************************************

"Fine,... give me some." Demanded Shivay as he noticed Anika was fast depleting the hot Maggie. "Say please first." Said Anika. "No way. Keep your Maggie. I dont want it." Said Shivay. Knowing that this battle would be lost, Anika said "Chalo, its OK. Here." Adding more to a fresh new plate, Anika passed Shivay his meal. "This is the only thing I can make without accidents." She said.

Shivay once again sniffed at the plate and the spoon. "No stench!" He thought. He watched as Anika waited for him to comment on how the Maggie tasted. This was a welcome meal, but he wouldn't let her know that. "So??" Asked Anika. "Well, I hope it doesn't kill me." Said Shivay. Exasperated Anika said "Come on Mr Oberoi, can you not admit it was good. FYI you would be complimenting Maggie, not me. Maggie is owned by Nestle. They run in the same circles as you, so it is high class after all." Said Anika. "Yeah right!" Snorted Shivay, "We beat their profit margins by 5 points at EOD." Said Shivay.

"Chalo Ok. See, you have no option but to spend the night here. Can we call some kind of truce? Try not to sneer at everything I say. I know you are the high and might SSO and I am the lowly Anika. Since that is established and I am not asking to be friends, can we just spend the night in civility?" Asked Anika.

"Why do you always assume things?" asked Shivay. "Like what?" Asked Anika. "Like not wanting to be friends." Thought his mind, but he said "Well nothing. I am OK with the truce. Just don't call me SSO." "Ok. Mr Oberoi ..." Began Anika. "You don't have to call me Mr Oberoi." Said Shivay. "Well then, Billuji since we are both here, shall we discuss the case?" Asked Anika.

**********************************************************

They talked through most of the night, discussing various aspects of the case with a healthy dose of side stories from her. Shivay now knew that there was a magic donkey in the colony that would kick people into good behavior. He was also told that drinking chai instead of his kaali coffee would immensely improve his mood, temperament and complexion. Shivay was beginning to wonder if she would ever run out of energy and shut up when he noticed the first signs of fatigue in her.

He wouldn't admit to her that he was impressed with the argument she was making regarding exposing Svetlana's baby scam. It was then, that he noticed that she had began to yawn a bit too frequently. He saw her reach for a book to check up a clause when he knew that she would soon fall asleep, and that too on the book. And that, was exactly what she did.

Moving the lamp closer to her and retreating into the shadows, Shivay watched Anika sleep.

There she lay at a respectable distance from him. Not once, through the night did she make a move on him. He half expected her to do so. After all, she was a woman with little means and here was an opportunity served on a platter to attempt to seduce him. Nor was she making a play to appear disinterested. He knew that one. Many a woman had tried to charm him by faking disinterest when servitude had failed. Nope, she was not attempting to do that either.

"Maybe she is not that into you?" Suggested his brain. "No!" He felt the emotions rise. He couldn't bear the thought of her being disinterested in him. What was happening here? Over the past few days every time he insulted or challenged her, she came back and proved him wrong. This was not when their thoughts were in sync about few aspects of the case. During such moments, even before he voiced a thought, it seemed like she understood it. Every time he was drawn to her physically, he felt she responded to him. It was just yesterday that when he gripped her waist and drew her close, he felt her arm on his shoulder grip and then relax to knead for an instant before gripping again. She was fighting some sort of an internal battle too.

This was annoying. He didn't want to think of her. This case would have to get resolved soon, so that she could go on being the nobody that she was. He needed to minimize the time he spent with her. He would need other lawyers.

Shivay Singh Oberoi had no need and would never again think of a woman, who was so ordinary that she had no last name even. Putting in a message to Khanna to rush the fly orders, he willed himself to look away from Anika's face as he waited for his ride home.

****************************************************************

Anika woke to the bright rays of the sun warming her face. She realized that she had drooled all over her book. "That would make the bagad billa smirk for sure!" She thought. Smiling at the thought of a smirking Shivay, she rubbed her eyes open and proceeded to call out for him. Not getting a response, she looked around and her eyes fell on the neatly folded Kurta on the seat that he had occupied.

There was no note for her. The man was gone. All that was left was his scent on the blue fabric. Breathing it in, Anika noted how luxurious it felt, how powerful and masculine. "What was I even thinking?!" She thought. "Anika didi!!" She heard Sahil call. Facing her reality with the biggest smile she could muster, Anika wiped away the one tiny tear that dared to escape.
