Hi,from my understanding it doesn't necessarily need 3 talaqs to be completely done . If a woman is granted the first talaq and is not taken back before the Iddah time is over that's it they are done and can't be back together unless another man willingly marries her and divorce on their own will ( can't fake or contract a marriage to gain mohalal)
In Zara's case it's strange as it's a story and there are different opinions some say when it's pronounced 3 times that's it others say because of extreme anger it can count as one .in the story 3 times at once is not allowed by law so they counted it as one . When counted as one or even 2 the wife has to stay in her husbands home as the husband is responsible for her still in providing her basic needs and shelter and during that time of iddah he has the rite to take her back . She is not a prisoner but Once the third talaq is pronounced she leaves his house as she is no longer his wife .it's irrevocable and she has to complete iddah period 3 months and 10 days as it's the appropriate time frame to make sure she isn't bearing a child before marrying another to make sure of the identity of the child in case there is one . Zara cannot be kicked out of her husbands home until she is irrevocably divorced from kabeer that's why she returned to her home and life .

When the show's first promo was launched, there were articles etc. about how this was a show that aimed at highlighting the isssue of triple talaq.
However, as the show started I felt like the issue was sidelined. First off, one has to remember that there are different sects within Islam, and the show never hinted at which sect it was portraying. Secondly even within sects there are different schools of thought that take different positions. If you wish to show a highlight an issue specific to Christian practioners, you always hint at if the characters being portrayed are catholic or Protestant, just for clarity- not to point fingers. If you wish to portray issues affecting practitioners of Hinduism, their respective castes and belief system is also portrayed. But that was not the case here.
This show classically lumped practitioners of Islam into "conservative and "moderate Muslims, which to me is a very poorly done job.
To further illustrate the point, correct me if I am wrong, Iddat, if I am not mistaken, is four months and ten days. Yet, when Zeenat asks about Iddat, she keeps saying three months and ten days and nobody corrects her.
Furthermore, there is one other thing that stands out in the show. It's when people keep refereeing to mazhab for different actions. Religion is part of culture, where Nikkah, Iddat, Parda, Namaz and Roza are parts of life they are norms and are not spoken of with any specific emphasis on religion. They are followed because that's what your parents did and their parents before them, not just because they are a part of your faith. The relationship of these acts with faith is hardly ever mentioned until and unless you are discussing fiqh academically or if it involves a philosophical discusssion about God.
The fact is that this show portrays a Muslim family, yet it does so in a manner that is reminiscent of the way English writers would write about the marriage practices of their colonial peers be it suttee or polygamy. That is to say that the show hardly ever takes a realistic point of view of the society it claims to represent. It clearly makes Zara and family "the other. Which is weird given the population of Muslims in India exceeds that of many Muslim countries.

Iddat in divorce is 3 months and if your husband dies it's 4 months 10 days.
