Shiva

Shiva is the most handsome. Lord Shiva has a typical masculine physique. He is robust, tall and handsome.
He is described as 'Karpura Gauram', white like camphor.

He is shown either in meditating or in the form of a Dancing God Nataraj where his dance is to the beat and rhythm of creation. He is also shown in sculptures with many hands. One pair of hands, for example, represents the balance between life and death. Shiva is tri netra or three eyed, and is neela kantha - blue-necked (having consumed poison to save the world from destruction). Besides, there are a lot many attributes associated with Lord Shiva. Here is a brief description of some of the important symbols that depict Lord Shiva. Each of his depiction signifies a different aspect of his Supreme Being.

Unclad body covered with ashes: This form of Lord Shiva depicts that Lord Shiva's presence is much higher than this physical phenomenon. According to some scholars, Shiva's body smeared with cemetery ash points to the philosophy of the life and death and the fact that death is the ultimate reality of the life.

Jata (Matted Hair): The flow of his matted hair represents Shiva as the Lord of Wind or Vayu, who is the subtle form of breath present in all living beings. Thus it is Shiva which is the lifeline for all living being. He is Pashupatinath.

Sacred Ganga: The holiest of the holy rivers, Ganga flows from the matted hair of Shiva. According to a legend, Shiva allowed an outlet to the great river to traverse the earth and bring purifying water to human being. Ganga also denotes fertility - one of the creative aspects of the Rudra.

The Third Eye: Lord Shiva is known as the three eyed Lord or Tryambaka Deva. The sun is his right eye, the moon left while the third eye of Shiva on his forehead is the eye of wisdom. It is the eye that looks beyond the obvious. The third eye can search evil from anywhere and destroys it completely.

Half-Open Eyes: The half-open eyes show that the universes cycle in process. When the eyes are completely closed it signifies the dissolvent of the universe and when it is completely open a new cycle of creation begins.

Crescent: Shiva bears on his head the crescent of the panchami (fifth day) moon. This is placed near the fiery third eye and this shows the power of Soma, the sacrificial offering, which is the representative of moon. It means that Shiva possesses the power of procreation along with the power of destruction. The moon is also a measure of time, thus Crescent also represent his control over time.

The Cobra Necklace: This suggests that Shiva is beyond the powers of death and is often the sole support in case of distress. He swallowed the poison kalketu for the wellbeing of the Universe. The deadly cobra represents that death aspect that Shiva has thoroughly conquered. The cobras around his neck also represent the dormant energy, called Kundalini, the serpent power. The snake curled three times around the neck of Lord Shiva depicts the past, present and future time. The snake looking in the right direction of Lord Shiva signifies that the Lords perpetual laws of reason and justice preserve natural order in the universe.

The Vibhuti: Vibhuti is a three line of ashes drawn on the forehead that signifies the Immortality of the soul and manifested glory of the Lord.

Tiger Skin: Lord Shiva is shown sitting on or wearing a tiger skin. The tiger is the vehicle of Shakti, the Goddess of power and force. Shiva is beyond and above any kind of force. He is the master of Shakti. The tiger skin that he wears symbolizes victory over every force. Tiger also represent lust. Thus sitting on Tiger skin, Shiva indicates that he has conquered lust.

The Elephant & Deer Skin: Shiva also wears elephant skins. Elephants represent pride. Wearing elephant skin, Shiva indicates that he has conquered pride. Similarly deer represent the flickering mind. Shiva wears deer skin which indicates that he has controlled the mind perfectly.

Rudraksha Necklace: Rudra' is the other name of Shiva. It also means strict or uncompromising and aksha' means eye. Rudraksha, the necklace worn by Lord Shiva shows that he is firm about his cosmic laws and to maintain law and order in the universe. The necklace has 108 beads, which symbolize the elements used in the creation of the world.

Damaru (Drum): A small drum with two sides alienated from each other by a thin neck-like structure represents the two utterly different states of existence, unclear and clear. When a damaru is shaken, the sound formed denotes Nada, the cosmic sound of AUM, which can be heard during deep meditation.

Trishul (Trident): A three-branched trident shown adjoining to Lord Shiva symbolizes His three fundamental powers will, action and knowledge. As a weapon the trident represents the instrument of punishment to the evil doer on all the three planes - spiritual, subtle and physical.

Nandi, the Bull: Nandi is said to be the vehicle of Lord Shiva. The bull represents both power and ignorance. Lord Shivas use of the bull as his vehicle expresses the idea that He removes ignorance and bequeaths power of wisdom on His followers.

Vedic writings say that Krishna has a stunningly beautiful spiritual form (Krishnameans "all-attractive").He plays a flute, His complexion is like a dark rain cloud, He wears peacock feathers in His long, black, curly hair, the soles of His feet are decorated with auspicious symbols, His voice is like rumbling thunder, and a unique gem Kaustubhahangs around His neck, along with a garland of ever-fresh flowers, attracting bees humming Vedic hymns.

The Brahma Samhita is a Sanskrit Pancaratra text composed of verses of prayer spoken by Brahma glorifying the supreme Lord Krishna or Govinda at the beginning of creation.

The lyrics, chapter 5 verse 38 reads: "I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord, who plays on His transcendental flute. His eyes are like lotus flowers, He is decorated with peacock plumes, and His bodily color resembles the color of a fresh black cloud, although His bodily features are more beautiful than millions of Cupids.

Chapter 6, verses 1-2 reads: "The Lord was dressed in yellow garments and had a blackish complexion.

The Sanskrit word "Krishna has the literal meaning "black, "dark or "dark-blue. Krishna is also called "yma, the blackish one, or the beautiful dark boy with a blackish color.

In Srimad Bhaagavatam Mahapurana , there are many descriptions of Krishna's appearance. I am quoting 2 of them-

  1. Wives of some brahmanas came to forest to give food to Krishna. They saw Krishna as follows- The brhmanas wives saw Krishna with a blackish complexion, wearing a garment that glittered like gold. He wore a nice garland of forest flowers and a peacock feather on His head. He was also painted with the minerals found in Vrindvana, and He looked exactly like a dancing actor on a theatrical stage. They saw Him resting one hand on the shoulder of His friend, and in His other hand He was holding a lotus flower. His ears were decorated with lilies, He wore marks of tilaka, and He was smiling charmingly. With their very eyes the wives of the brhmanas saw the Supreme Personality of Godhead, of whom they had heard so much, who was so dear to them, and in whom their minds were always absorbed. Now they saw Him eye to eye and face to face, and Krishna entered within their hearts through their eyes.
  2. When Akrra entered Vrindavan, he saw Krishna and Balarma engaged in supervising the milking of the cows. Krishna was dressed in yellow garments and Balarma in bluish. Akrra also saw that Their eyes were exactly like the beautiful lotus flower that grows during the autumn season. He saw Krishna and Balarma in the spring of Their youth. Although They had the same bodily features, Krishna was blackish in complexion, whereas Balarma was whitish. Both were the shelter of the goddess of fortune. They had well-constructed bodies, beautiful hands and pleasing faces, and They were as strong as elephants. Now, after seeing Their footprints, marked with flag, trident, thunderbolt and lotus, Akrra actually saw Krishna and Balarma face to face. Although They were the most influential personalities, They were glancing at him with smiling faces. Akrra could understand that both Krishna and Balarma had returned from tending cows in the forest; They had taken Their baths and were dressed with fresh clothing and garlanded with flowers and with necklaces made of valuable jewels. Their bodies were smeared with the pulp of sandalwood. Akrra greatly appreciated the aroma of the flowers and sandalwood and Their bodily presence.

Kartikeya is a synonym of handsomeness. Many parents keep their son's name as Kartikeya hoping their son would become handsome. This son of Shiva is said to have killed a demon when he was just six days old! He is the protector of heaven and is seen as the most eligible bachelor. Though he too is married , but devotees still imagine him as a young prince with youth and virility dripping all over.He is often described as exuding boyish charm and yet very reserved.Often depicted as calm and serene character , he had a face that resembled the radiance of full moon.

The handsome God of heaven Lord Indra is often praised for his virility and handsome features. His wife Sachi is sometimes called the luckiest of all as her husband was the most good looking among all. Indra's other name is Vasava and his wife Sachi is often called Poulomi. Hence many Rishis in Mahabharata are seen blessing a good looking couple calling them Vasava and Poulomi.

In Rigveda, Indra is described as strong willed. He was commonly characterized as a muscular man, golden or reddish in color, sometimes violet coloured , with four very long arms which are said to span the entirety of the skies. Indra is normally depicted riding a resplendent golden carriage which is drawn by two brown horses with flowing manes. In his right hand he carries his vajra, or thunderbolt, which is said to have been constructed from the bones of the seer Dadhichi. The weapon itself is circular with a hole at its center, and serves the purpose of creating both lightning and thunder. Indra also employs arrows, a net, a huge lance and the anka (a hook) for the purpose of catching enemies. When portrayed having four arms, he has lances in two of his hands that resemble elephant goads. When he is shown to have two arms, he holds only the vajra and a bow.
