It is said that a man is not complete until he has seen the baby he has made; that a man's life finally comes a full circle when he sees the miracle of life, in the form of a little baby, he made. For a man who was a master of words, and a perfectionist with colors, the sight in front of him was too overwhelming. For the first time in his life, Omkara Singh Oberoi was left speechless.
He looked at the little baby girl of a few hours, cocooned in a baby pink wrap, sleeping soundly in her cradle. She looked every bit like her mother, except for her big black eyes; his baby girl had inherited his eyes. Omkara carefully pulled a chair and sat next to the cradle, lest he disturbed his sleeping child and her sleeping mother, who was asleep a few feet away from the cradle. A small smile crept on his lips when he recalled the series of events since last night, while looking at his sleeping child.
Gauri had refused to be taken to the hospital despite mild pains; she wasn't due for another two weeks. However, in the middle of the night, she'd regretted for not having listened to the family after her pain intensified. It was around 2 AM when Omkara had carried her from the bed into the car, all the while rubbing her hands and telling her she was going to be alright, and simultaneously urging Rudra to drive faster.
The hours of labour were gruelling; obviously for Gauri since her contractions were getting stronger and difficult with every few minutes. But this also seemed taxing on Omkara, who despite Gauri's requests, refused to leave her side. "The cervix needs to be dilated up to ten centimetres; she's just three. We'll have to wait." The doctor had said, walking away, and the two had no option but to wait. "There's no point in ya'll coming now; I sent Rudy back too. The doctor says she'll not be ready anytime soon..." he'd told Annika, who had called to inquire about her little sister.
"I need some cold water..." Gauri said in the early hours of morning, in a tired breath. Omkara nodded, and rushed to get some ice water for her. She had seemed to be at ease gulping it down, except for the contractions kicking in every 5 minutes, lasting up to a minute. "Omkara ji... I'm scared..." she confessed, as he had held her hand through one of the painful ones. "You're doing great, love. I'm here with you. Okay?" he'd said, kissing the back of her hand and wiping her damp hair away from her forehead, while watching the monitor as the pain was reducing.
"She's ready..." the doctor said, after she'd checked Gauri, "...and the baby seems to be in position..." Whisking her away to the room for delivery, Omkara sent out a message to the family group, informing them the same.
"Push, Gauri..." Omkara encouraged, and Gauri had tears in her eyes with the entire struggle, "I cannot... I'm tired, Omkara ji..." she was on the verge of bursting into tears due to overtiredness. She'd been pushing for an hour now. "Mrs. Gauri, you're crowning. I need you to push..." the doctor told her, and Gauri fell back in exhaustion, almost giving up. Omkara kissed her forehead and held her hands in his, "You can do this... Let's do this, Gauri... We've waited for our child for nine months. Don't give up when our child is almost here... Come on..." he encouraged her, holding her, and rubbing her belly, gently. Gauri looked at her husband, who was an absolute nervous wreck, but kept himself strong for her and for their baby; she nodded and gave one hard push, and that was when everything else fell silent.
"It's a girl!" the doctor exclaimed, as she pulled the baby out, and placed the tiny infant on Gauri's chest, after covering the newborn with a warm towel. The doctor then clamped the umbilical cord, and asked Omkara to cut it between the clamps. "Will they be hurt?" Omkara said, trembling, as he held the surgical scissor. The doctor smiled, "No, they wouldn't..." Omkara cut the cord, and then looked at Gauri, who was smiling through her tears, as her baby tried to suckle her. "You'll have to push once more, Mrs. Gauri. Let's do this..." the doctor said and Gauri nodded. Omkara was confused; why push after the baby is out? Only later did he know that there was something called as the placenta to be delivered too!
"We'll have to clean her up, and assess her..." the nurse said a while later, looking at the baby. Gauri nodded, and Omkara looked at his little girl being picked up by the woman. "Careful... he squeaked helplessly, and the nurse chuckled, "We do this every day, sir... Don't worry; your daughter is in good hands..." After the little one was taken away, Omkara sat next to Gauri and kissed her forehead, wiping her sweaty face. "How are you feeling?" he asked. She smiled weakly, "Exhausted..." He had tiny tears in his eyes, "Congratulations, Mumma dearest... and thank you! For giving me the world's best and most precious gift!" She simply smiled, mouthing a "congratulations" to him, as he brushed his nose against hers. "Mr. Oberoi, we'll have to take your wife to the post-op. You can wait in the room. Our nurse will bring your daughter to the room in some time..." the nurse announced.
After collecting the ID band from the nurse, Omkara walked out to the room to see his whole family waiting there, restlessly. He smiled as Shivay and Rudra came forward to hug him. "My daughter is here!" Omkara said to no one in particular, between happy tears, in a shaky whispering tone, and the eyes of every family member turned misty. It was the first baby of the house, after all! Dadi and Jhanvi hugged him and congratulated him. "How's Gauri?" Annika asked, and Om nodded, "She's resting; both my girls will be brought to the room in some time." The pride with which he said that made everyone grin.
A few hours later, there was a knock on the door. The nurse had arrived with his baby who was wrapped up in a pink blanket. "Congratulations!" she said, handing over the newborn to Omkara, who looked nervous. What if he hurt his little girl? Heaven forbid he hold her in a wrong manner, or even worse, drops her... "Let me sit down..." he said to the nurse, and then, held his hands out to hold her. Dadi and Jhanvi sat on either side of him, as Rudra, Bhavya, Shivay and Anika watched in fascination. Omkara held her, like he was holding a ticking time bomb. "Hi, my little doll" he whispered, and the little one opened her wide eyes to look up at him.
Omkara could hear everyone around him gush as to how pretty the child looked, and whom she resembled. But Omkara did not pay any heed to any of them. All he focused was on his little baby girl- a part of him; a life that he and Gauri had made; a symbol of their love; a blessing from above. His little baby girl looked into his eyes and stared at him, as he stared back at her. It was in this moment that Omkara knew he was capable of being so much in love; it was right in this moment he knew that he would give his everything to bring a smile on this little one's face. It was as if the entire universe had shrunk and zeroed down into this one precious bundle of joy that he held in his arms. And later, even when Gauri was brought back to the room, he had gushed over how she was feeling, only to sit by his little girl after his wife had dozed off to sleep, looking at the little marvel in wonderment.
At present, Omkara looked at the little one stir and slowly open her eyes. Just when she was about to cry, Omkara stood up and tried hushing her, lest her cries wake Gauri up. "Hush... okay... okay... I'm here..." he said, slowly picking up his baby in his arms. Swaddling and gently swaying her, he noticed she was slowly calming down. Omkara sat in the chair, watching his little one drift back into sleep. And suddenly, he froze. For his daughter had slowly held his index finger in her hand. Omkara stared down at this breathing miracle, and smiled looking at her, nestled safely in his arms.
Bending down, he slowly kissed her cheek, and her eyes fluttered open. She looked at him as if she was in awe of her father. "You look at me as if I'm some kind of a hero, just like your mother does, at times!" he said, whispering to her, while she blinked at him. "But the truth is, you two were sent to rescue me from all my darkness, fears and vices; like a ray of light, a ray of hope..." He smiled as she yawned. He kissed her tiny hand that was still wrapped around his finger. "I used to see your mother as my sole reason to live. Now, you too are my reason to live. Whenever I fall weak, you will be my reason to stay firm; you'll be my faith to grow stronger. I don't know what good I must have done to deserve to have you and your mother in my life. I promise to be thankful to the one above for sending you to me. I promise I will never let anything or anyone harm you. I promise to protect you till my last breath. I'm going to hide you in my arms against this big bad world..." He caressed her heard; her soft matt of hair.
"You know, seeing you sleep so peacefully brings me so much of peace, so much of serenity... It's as if, everything is perfect in this world." He chuckled, "You may not even understand what I'm saying, right?" Then, heaving a sigh, he touched her cheek and her button-like nose as she dozed off to sleep again, "I've had a very bitter childhood... he confessed to the sleeping child. "But i'm not going to let the shadows of my past come close to you. You will have everything that I did not get as a child. I don't know what kind of a father I will be. I'm scared that someday I may disappoint you; that someday I may fail..."
"You're going to be the world's best father, Omkara ji..." he heard a croaky voice from the bed. "Gauri..." he said, sniffing softly. She nodded, calling him close to her bed. He carried their little girl and placed her in Gauri's arms. Gauri ran her hand over her daughter's head. "There may be times when she may get upset with us. But she's going to love you a lot; maybe even more than she would love me..." Omkara chuckled, "You think so?" Gauri nodded as she placed a palm on his cheek, "I know so. She's going to love you a lot. And I know you're going to spoil her with your love too..." He shrugged with a grin, "You can be the stricter one. I am never going to shout at her, you know that." She grinned, "I know..."
"Have we thought of a name?" she asked looking at her husband, while nursing their little one. He nodded as he ran a hand over the baby's hair, "Aadya Singh Oberoi..." Gauri smiled "I love the name..." Omkara sat next to Gauri and wound his arms around her. Leaning against her head, he sighed, "Life is going to get busy from now on..." She hummed as she leaned against him. They stayed that way in silence, revelling in the warmth and tenderness of the moment, savouring the joy of parenthood.
Once done with nursing her, Omkara held his arms out to carry Aadya, and Gauri happily let him take her. As she lay down, she watched the father-daughter duo standing near the window. He whispered something against her cheek and placed a kiss on her forehead. It was at this moment Gauri felt overwhelmed. She could already see how well a father her Omkara ji had become. She never realised how much she had loved her husband, until she saw him looking at their daughter with all the love in his eyes. She knew there would be times where she would be annoyed with Omkara for spoiling Aadya, but she also knew she wouldn't have it any other way. She knew he was going to play like a kid with her, support her like a friend and protect her like a bodyguard; she had no doubt about it. Gauri smiled, capturing this precious moment of their life.
Omkara coddled his Aadya as she stared at him with her big black eyes. He knew no matter how big she grows, she will always remain his baby. She was going to be his princess forever, and he would do everything to paint her life with colors of happiness. He had already self-proclaimed himself as Aadya's superhero, who would be by her side at all times she needs him. He hugged her close to his chest, and said a silent prayer of gratitude.
It was true that the littlest feet leave the biggest footprint in one's heart, and this little girl had already cemented one in his heart. He knew that this journey of being a Dad was going to be exciting; he just couldn't wait to explore more of this.
