Part 27C
A Baby Just Like You
Raman clutched his wife, securing her protectively as she fell limp into his waiting arms.
"Romi, papa he yelled, as he carried Ishita into their room, followed by his mother, mother in law and all the Bhalla and Iyer women. "Call Dr Mehta, now.
"Ishita he whispered, laying her gently on their bed. "Ishita, oh God, please be okay. Ishita, wake up.
"Puttar Kya hua ishita puttar ko?
(What's wrong with Ishita, son?)
"Raman, hato, mujhe dekhne do. Ishu, kanna, kya hua. Murugan, kya hua?
(Raman, move, let me see. Ishu, child, what's wrong? What's wrong Lord?)
"Bhai, bhabhi was fine, phir kya hua.
(Bhai, bhabhi was fine, then what happened?)
"Akka, Vandu akka what's wrong with Ishu akka?
Quiet
Raman turned to face the gaggle of women pressing onto the bed, his arms still protectively around his wife. His voice was quiet, but had a tinge of steel to it.
"Doctor aa raha hai, and until he gets here, I want absolute quiet in this room. Ishita has been sick since yesterday lekin usko rest dene ke bagair aap sab yahan shor kar rahe hai.
(The Doctor is coming, and until he comes, I want absolute quiet in this room. Ishita has been sick since yesterday, but instead of letting her rest, you all are creating a ruckus here)
"Rinki, Mihika he called as he spotted his daughters frightened face peering from behind her dadi. "Please take Ruhi outside.
"It's okay, beta he called out to Ruhi, even as Rinki stooped to life her up. "Mumma will be fine.
"Aap sab bhi please, just give her some air, she... He stopped in mid sentence as he felt Ishita stirring in his arms.
"Raman she whispered. "I'm okay..
"No, you're not he retorted. "Dr Batra told me about yesterday Ishita, and Dr Mehta is on his way. As soon as he has checked you out, we are going straight to City Hospital. No, no arguments he said fiercely, as Ishita mumbled in protest.
"Yesterday? What happened yesterday, Ishu? Vandu chipped in, as she handed Raman a glass of water. "Give her a few sips Raman.
"Kya hua tha Kanna?
(What had happened, child?)
Haan, puttar, kya hua kal? Ishita puttar ne toh kuch nahi kaha humse "
(Yes son, what happened? Ishita didn't tell us anything)
"Jab mein nahi tha, toh aap log ko khayal rakhna chahiye tha na ma " Raman muttered, as he took the glass away from Ishita and settled her back again.
(When I wasn't here, you people should have been taking care of her, ma)
Lekin bhai, Ishita me humme kuch nahi bataya " Simmi retorted.
(But Bhai, Ishita never told us anything)
'Raman Ishita touched his arm softly, her eyes pleading. " Simmi is right, mein ne kuch nahi kaha tha. Please. Mujhe aap se akele mein baat karni hai. Please.
(Raman, Simmi is right, I didn't tell anyone anything. I need to talk to you alone. Please)
He nodded and turned around again.
"Aap log please kuch der ke liye humme akela chhod denge. Close the door behind you, and Simmi, Vandu, please let me know as soon as Dr Mehta gets here.
(Can you all please leave us alone for a little while)
"But ishu Mrs Iyer was prepared to hold her ground, worried by the sight of her active daughter's wan and still form.
"Amma, let's go. Let Ishu rest Vandu shepherded her mother out and waited for Mrs Bhalla and Simmi to follow, closing the door firmly behind them.
Ishita sighed in relief and tried to sit up, smiling reassuringly at Raman as he protested.
"Raman mein theek hoon " she smiled at his worried face, wondering how he would take what she was about to tell him. "I'm fine baba. You don't have to call Dr Mehta
"No arguments Ishita he retorted fiercely, before engulfing her in his arms. "You have no idea how worried I've been since Dr Batra told me. And now, again...
"Ramannn ishita pulled back from his tight hold, lying back on the pillows and turning her smiling face up to her husbands worried visage. "It's okay baba. I'm fine. In fact...I'm more than fine. Raman...
She hesitated as a wave of love swept over her, her eyes filling with tears at the love and concern for her that she saw in his eyes.
"Ishita, what's wrong. Kya hua hai? Please tell me his voice was frantic again at the sight of those tears, his terrified heart imagining a hundred scary scenarios.
"Raman, no, don't worryshe threw herself into his secure embrace again, conscious of the joy she was about to bring to him.
"Raman...Dr Batra told you na, I fainted yesterday she pulled back again and looked him squarely in the face, her hands clutching for his, until he held them tight.
"Yes he nodded. "And why you didn't...
Sshhh she interrupted. "Mujhe bolne do please.
(Please let me speak)
He nodded, his hands tightening on hers.
"Well, after that I saw Dr Sharma, she did some tests and ...and Raman
"Kya? He whispered, confused by the juxtaposition of her welling eyes and the tremulous smile that hovered on her lips. "Ishita, kya baat hai?
(What?Ishita, What is it?)
Ishita took a deep breath.
"Raman, I'm pregnant.
There was a pin drop silence in the room, his hands tightly clasping her the only outward sign that Raman had heard her.
"Raman, please say something. Aap khush ho na? I know I said I didn't want this, but Dr Sharma said it's a miracle, yeh ho jata hai, and Raman...
He was still silent, but a sheen of tears had covered his eyes, and her own eyes started to overflow.
"Ishita, you're sure jaan? His voice was tentative, as if not quite ready to believe the happiness that was about to engulf them both.
"Haan Raman, she did a scan, I ...I saw ... Raman, I'm sure. I'm pregnant. Our baby Raman, our baby is in my womb
The tears that had been threatening him spilled over as he engulfed her in his arms yet again. They sobbed silently in each other's arms for a few minutes, holding each other tightly, their tears combining and their souls singing in unison.
"Ishita he said finally, holding her slightly away, searching her face. "But you're okay, right. I mean, you will be okay, all this fainting, your health is ok, right.
"Haan Raman she smiled tremulously. "Yeh first trimester mein hota hai, but we have an appointment with the Obstetrician next week, toh hum sub kuch clear kar sakte hai. But Raman, aap khush toh hai na?
(Yes Raman. This happens in the first semester and we have an appointment with the obstetrician next week, so we can clear everything. But Raman, you are happy, aren't you?)
"Khush? His face lit up with the smile that never failed to bring her to her knees. " Ishita, you have no idea, yeh baby, yeh baby hamara sapna hai Ishita, yeh hamari pyar ki nishani hai, aur mein isko duniya ki har khushi doonga. Yeh baby...
(Happy? Ishita you have no idea. This baby is our dream Ishita, the symbol of our love, and I will give it all the happiness in the world. This baby...)
He broke off and engulfed her into his arms again. "This is the greatest gift ever Ishita. Mein... I can't tell you... I love you. I love you so so much. Thank you. Thank you my love.
He showered her face with kisses, tender, loving, kissing away the tears that she could not stop.
"Lekin tumhe kuch hoga nahi, na Ishita. I can't lose you. Sub kuch ho tum meri
(But nothing will happen to you, will it Ishita? I can't lose you. You are my everything)
"Sab theek hoga Raman she whispered, confident and content in his love. "Everything will be just fine.
"I want a baby just like you Ishita he declared, his eyes shining. And she sunk into his arms, content.
Later that Evening
The doctor had come and gone, sworn to secrecy after Ishita had informed him of the true reason for her light headedness.
"Take it easy until you have seen your own doctor, Mrs Bhalla. And don't worry, I won't say anything to your family.
Both Raman and Ishita did not want to share their news with their family just yet, wanting to savor it just with each other for a few days. They could announce the news at New Years, Ishita had suggested to Raman, after they had seen the Obgyn and after they had gotten used to the idea themselves.
Deep inside she was also apprehensive, not quite believing the good fortune that had smiled upon them. The family would be ecstatic for them, they knew, but just for a few days, this was their sweet little secret. Just theirs.
Raman had kept the hordes out of their room after the Doctor left, telling the family that Ishita was fine, just tired and overworked, and that she needed to rest, without any disturbances. Only the mothers, Ruhi and Adi would be allowed in, he decreed, and that too for short visits so as not to disturb her.
So Amma and mummyji had been allowed in, and then shown the door by Raman while Ishita called apologetically after them, not daring to get up from bed while he glowered at her from the door.
The children were next and their visit was equally short.
"Raman, aap kya kar rahe ho Ishita protested after he led Adi and Ruhi out of the room, assuring them their mumma was fine but to keep the noise volumes down. "Amma looked so upset, aur mein theek hoon na. It's Christmas today, mujhe bhi sab ke saath enjoy karna hai, please.
Her Amma had not only been upset, she had turned on Raman with ferocity, demanding to know why he was being so secretive, when he had just been telling them all off for not taking care of Ishita in his absence.
Ishita understood her husbands possessiveness, his determination to shield and protect her, but this was her family, she loved them, and today was Christmas after all.
"Please Raman she had repeated, entreating him with her sad eyes.
"Okay he had relented, with a sheepish grin, " I just wanted to keep you for myself a little while. I missed you madrassan.
He smiled and came to her, lying down on their bed and pulling her tenderly into his arms. "Baby aa jaayegi toh baby ki papa ko toh tum bhool jayogi, so how about some attention for baby's papa today huh?
"Jaayegi?Acha toh aap ko ladki chahiye?
"I told you. I want a baby just like you
"But I want a baby just like you she retorted. "My junior Raavan
"Lekin madam, agar woh junior Raavan hoga, toh woh tumhari saari attention chahega na? Aur phir Senior Raavan ka kya hoga?
"Kya attention chahiye mere senior Raavan ko?Ishita asked wickedly, stretching up on top of him until her lips were tantalisingly close to his. "Yeh?
And she bent her head, softly touching her lips to his.
He made a happy sound of victory and captured her lips firmly, kissing her with all the yearning and joy in his heart. She exulted in his kisses, until a knock on the door reminded them of the anxious family outside.
"Raman please ab chalo na. Let's join everyone.
So they had joined the family, and Raman had hovered protectively around her until the others had gotten the message, and Ishita was able to join in the family fun, but in a quiet corner, and mostly undisturbed. She loved how protective he was being, how he would not let her lift a finger, and how he adroitly maneuvered away anyone (mothers and sisters included) who tried to question her on her faint earlier in the day.
At last dinner had been eaten, and the children had retired to Ruhi's room, to play with their new gadgets and toys. It was time for the adults to exchange presents.
Raman had let go off Ishita long enough to grab a few things from his bag, and he demanded to open the present giving.
"A special present from someone who can't be here he smiled as he handed over a jewellery box to Mihika.
"From my budhu? " Mihika exclaimed as she hurriedly unclasped the box, to display a beautiful set of silver earrings. "mere budhu ki itni acchi choice? Jeeju, you must've helped him, no?
"No, Mihika Raman laughed. "I'm just the delivery boy. Bala, I hope you have something amazing for your wife. Warna ye Mihir sab ko piche chod dega
The others then took turns to hand out their presents, interspersed with oohs, aahs and thank yous until Mihika turned on Raman again.
"Jeeju. Akka. Aap dono ke gift kahan hai, huh? Aap toh bahut chup ho
Ishita straightened up -She had been sitting back in Ramans arms on the floor, along with the other younger Bhallas and Iyers. She turned her neck to look at her husband, her face glowing.
"Mein ne toh Raman ko gift de diya Miku She addressed her sister but her gaze was fixed on her husband.
"Haan Mihika Raman drawled, his eyes caressing his wife's beautiful face. " That's why we were late coming out, you know. Mujhe meri gift mil rahi thi
"Oh wow Jeeju Mihika exclaimed. "Kya diya akka ne aap ko?
"I'm sorry Mihika, lekin meri gift zara private hai. I can't tell you. She colored even as she made that statement, realizing how her family would interpret it.
"Aisa kya gift Ishita? Mrs Iyer asked puzzlingly as Romi, Bala, Vandu and Mihika hooted in delight, causing Ishita to blush furiously.
"Lekin aap kya de rahe ho bhabhi ko, Bhai? Romi insisted. "Woh bhi private hai kya?
Raman smiled, and unheeding of their relatives sitting around them, placed a loving and lingering kiss on his wife's forehead. "Meri biwi ko aaj mein khud ko gift karta hoon - Mihir can look after the overseas business, Lekin ab mein Ishita ko chod kar nahi jaoonga
And then Raman Bhalla took his blushing wife into his arms, having received the greatest gift of his life this Christmas.
A savior King was born that day
A baby just like you
And as the wiseman came with gifts
I come with my gift too

EditedVeee that was awesome...after reading the update I wanted to shout out loud and say "..And she's back!!" Such a sweet cute emotional romantic update. I wasn't expecting romance in this update but you surprised me and I'm certainly not complaining. Ishra romance I enjoy any day. Feels good to read a lovely update like this one after the crappy current track.I loved how puttar packed everyone off. I was not ready for a family celebration just yet. As it is their family is a circus isme yeh news milega toh bas ishra private moment ka band bajega.I enjoyed their Jr Raavan Jr Ishita banter. I liked how while he was very happy to hear the news, he was concerned about her health and was worried about losing her. It's nice to know that biwi is his top priority.Coming back to the romance...that kiss omg omg 😳 this was my exact reaction.I am very happy to see you investing so much time and effort into this story. Proud of you. And no it doesn't seem forced. It seems very natural and still so enjoyable.Thank u for the heads up..I got to res first🥳
