There has always been an element of
competition between Sonam Kapoor and
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. But while the two
actresses engaged in a cold war till a few
years back, the two have been on cordial
terms ever since the last couple of years.
Last year, when Aishwarya's contract with a
prominent jewellery house got over after
three years, Sonam was roped in. Both their
outfits at Cannes are hot topics of
discussion among the Indian media and
their fans, with debates and polls forming
on who looked better. But now all that
seems to be a thing of the past. It's a happy
event that is happening in Bollywood next
week and one of the biggest weddings of
the year when Anil and Sunita Kapoor's
daughter Sonam gets married to Anand
Ahuja and bygones are
best-left bygones. Sonam has personally
invited Aishwarya to her wedding.
Says a source, "Last week, when Sunita
Kapoor bumped into Aishwarya at the
wedding reception of Saudamini Mattu, the
niece of designer Sandeep Khosla, she made
it a point to greet her warmly and personally
invited her for her daughter's wedding.
After a couple of days, Sonam also called
Aishwarya and invited her. They chatted for
a few minutes after which Aishwarya
graciously accepted the invitation. While the
younger Bachchans (Aishwarya, Shweta
and Abhishek) have been invited by Sonam
too, the older ones have also been invited by
both Anil and Sunita. Weddings are special
moments, it's a time to have fun and forget
the past and everybody is doing just that for
Sonam's wedding. Abhishek has worked
with her in two films Delhi 6 and Players
and both are good friends.
The rivalry between Sonam and Aishwarya
started when Sonam was announced as the
face of L'Oreal in 2009. She spoke about
walking the Cannes red carpet but the
company finally announced otherwise.
Reportedly, Aishwarya had expressed her
unhappiness on the younger actress
walking the red carpet, especially as she was
the international face of the company. It was
reported that a deeply upset Sonam, on
missing out her debut at the French Riviera,
had apparently said, "Aishwarya is an aunty
from another generation. While Aishwarya
chose to maintain a dignified silence on the
matter, Sonam had later denied the
comment saying she was misquoted. She
had later walked the red carpet at Cannes in
2011 and since then, what Sonam and
Aishwarya have worn has become a much-
discussed topic among Indian media.
In 2016, when Aishwarya's purple lips
became a rage, Sonam again shocked
everybody when she told PTI, "The whole
idea of fashion and makeup is for people to
discuss it and I guess she (Aishwarya)
wanted to be discussed. She achieved what
she wanted to achieve with it, which I think
is great. I think it (purple lip colour) looked
great and she (Aishwarya) carried it off with
aplomb. I think it was great to do it in the
15th year, it's cool. She was trending
everywhere.
In an interview with Anupama Chopra,
when informed about Sonam's remarks,
Aishwarya said that it was premeditated at
all. She said, "I cross my heart and I promise
you that it was not premeditated at all.
But truth is that Sonam and Aishwarya,
despite their tongue-in-cheek witticisms
towards each other and fashion rivalry at
Cannes, have maintained their cordiality
since 2012, when a patch-up was brought
about by Aishwarya's husband Abhishek in
New Zealand. He and Sonam were shooting
together when Aishwarya decided to visit
him on the sets. Aishwarya and Sonam's
alleged war has been much spoken about.
Buzz is that Aishwarya and Sonam sorted
out their issues at that time.
