Ranbir Kapoor the Goodwill Ambassador of Mijwan Welfare Society with Shabana Azmi and Namrata Goyal at its helm will be the showstopper for the 9th Annual Fashion show The Walk of Mijwan by Manish Malhotra The Summer Collection 2018.
It marks the long journey of nine years since Manish and MWS joined hands. This has resulted in a sea change in the lives of the women involved in the Craft of chikankari. Says Ranbir Kapoor, "We, the young people of India, need to turn our attention towards rural India and focus on empowering the girl child. My sister Riddhima ( check spelling ) and I were raised as equals and I want every girl and boy to be treated equally.To my young friends , I say "Be the Change you wish to see in the world.You can do it and your time starts now
Late Kaifi Azmi founded Mijwan Welfare Society with the goal of making Mijwan a scaleable and replicable model of development with a focus on the girl child and women.In 1993 Mijwan didn't exist on the map of India -Today Mijwan is known worldwide.
Youth President Namrata Goyal says, "The annual Mijwan Fashion Show brings the spotlight on Mijwan and gives us the means to carry on all the work behind the scenes that MWS does- we run The Kaifi Azmi School and Inter-College for girls, Computer Centre, Sewing and Embroidery Centre. The Sewing and Embroidery Centre started with 40 girls today it has 400 workers spread over 10 villages in UP.
Veteran actor Shabana Azmi said she is following in the footsteps of legendary poet her father Kaifi Azmi by providing employment opportunities to people from small towns and villages.
The 67-year-old actor said, who runs Mijwan Welfare Society (MWS), said through the NGO, which was founded by her father, they concentrate on rural areas to bring about holistic economic development in the country.My father believed that India's remarkable economic progress can only be meaningful if it reaches rural India, where 80 per cent of the population lives, but is denied access to opportunity.
"His prophetic words have become my mantra in the work that I do with the weak and the dispossessed. When Kaifi saheb embarked on the journey alone, Mijwan (a village in Uttar Pradesh) did not even figure on the map of India. Today, Mijwan is known all over the world, said Azmi.
PVR has joined hands with the NGO and would screen a 60-second-long video which narrates the inspiring story about Mijwan before the national anthem is played, a press release issued here said.
Mijwan was launched with the goal of creating employment opportunities for the region's women and reviving the art of chikankari embroidery.
Celebrity fashion designer Manish Malhotra has also collaborated with Azmi to provide work to the Mijwan artisans. Bollywood A-listers such as Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and others have walked the ramp to support the cause of Mijwan in the past.
