The Five Shades of Grief

Today, was about the different shades of grief in my belief. In the regular sense there are 5 stages of grief: shock/denial, anger, bargaining, sadness/depression, and acceptance. In a perfect world everyone goes through these stages in order, but that is not always the case.

Aditya is experiencing the anger and acceptance stage together. He's angry at Pooja. He's angry at his father. He's angry at his mother. He's angry at Zoya. He's angry at Yash. He's even angry at himself. He has accepted that Pooja was having an affair just because he sees the two holding hands. Yet he is so angry that he cannot even sit in the same ambulance as her. He is so angry that he refuses to see her though he goes to the hospital. He even refuses to wear the colour of mourning for her tomorrow, choosing to wear black instead of white. I would like to note that in different cultures black is actually the colour of mourning, not white.

On the other hand, Zoya is in the shock/denial stage of grief. She refuses to accept that Yash was having an affair. She has an excuse for every possible option. He was helping Pooja. He's friends with Pooja. He didn't know Pooja and someone is framing them. The body isn't actually Yash's. Anything to deny even the possibility that Yash was anything but monogamous. Even if that means slapping a stranger or traveling outside her comfort zone. I felt the slap wasn't needed, but it was the right reaction for someone in denial, grieving, and impulsive. Zoya is all 3 of these and so it makes sense that she slapped Aditya instead of just pushing him away or running away herself or yelling at him.

Of course today they decided to introduce a rather stereotypical family member: Yash's sister. Yash's sister is the typical Indian TV serial vamp who hates her bhabhi and mocks her at every stage. Nice to see Vaishnavi Dhanraj again after so long, but seriously the CVs need to come up with better characters than the usual stereotypical characters. We already had the typical rich father and sad wife in Aditya's parents. And now this. I'm glad though that at least they are working hard on some of the other characters like Zoya's parents and even Aditya and Zoya.

On the other hand, there's Aditya's brother who cares more about his bhabhi than his own brother and is distant even from his own parents. This is a different character. I've never seen this actor before, but I look forward to seeing him more.

Wonderful post. And I agree about the characters. Also, I missed the previous episode, and somehow assumed Aditya's brother was Pooja's brother until the end. It was so refreshing to watch him concerned about his bhabhi whereas everyone else seemed to care only about their own child/sibling.

i think adtya has straight over jumped to acceptance . the anger is because she cheated on him. he is not in denial not in sadness, not angry that he has lost his childhood friend & wife. he somewhere also needs to grieve too for his dead friend , love & wife as even if she was cheating at least he loved her . and if she turns out to be innocent he is going to be really guilty

With Aditya I feel the stages of grief are inverted. He's gone straight to acceptance, but if it does turn out that she was innocent, then he won't feel guilty. He'll be in denial because by then it'll be hardened in his mind that she cheated. From there he won't be able to accept that she was actually innocent.

I don't think its just 5 shades of grief alone here, they pretty much established Aditya's character when he pretty much told Pooja he hates deceptiveness. He sees the world in black and white and there is no place in his world for empathy or forgiveness or even to think about the possibilty that probably its some sort of coincidence that Pooja and Yash were together. His mind immediately leapt to affair, even though according to him Pooja was his best friend since the age of 12. If you have that kind of relationship, it would be so hard to believe that of your best friend let alone your lover or wife. But then again we see the complex relationships he seems to have with his family. He goes to Pooja's mother ignoring his own mom's comforting arms, his father and him hold a tense complicated relationship. And we are yet to understand his relationship with his brother.
Interestingly enough this is contrasted with Zaara's character, who is so in love and so trusting of Yash, that she refuses to believe he had an extramarital affair, infact Zaara seems almost naive while Aditya seems almost rigid to the point of extreme cynicism. Neither I would categorise normal, but the one common thing is that both exhibit extreme emotional behaviour albeit of the opposite spectrum.

^ In a way the CVs have established everyone's characters, but that's just it. It's only the second episode. What we see isn't everything. It's what the CVs want to show us so far. Not only that, but over time the characters will change.

I think Aditya's already hardened resolved is going to make it impossible for him to truly move on until he's received some closure. He's so impulsive and quick to jump the gun about Pooja's infidelity. And he's forcing Zoya into trying to see what he thinks is so obvious, but isn't that the beauty of two very different hearts? That Zoya refuses to accept his truth because she has her own, one that is keeping her alive and keeping her going. Yet Aditya wants to shatter that resolve and break her to the bare bones of what he feels.

Aditya is very self-assured to the point I think that he becomes blind to a fault with the people around him. I wonder, when in the future that he falls in love if he will be just as convincing, just as overzealous and just as forthcoming with his love for Zoya. WIll he scream and scream her name, her love, until she is able to accept that truth? Just some interesting forethought into their tumultuous relationship 😳
