You are absolutely right moon wearer.
One needs lot of time to understand the character and it does effect their health. The recent example is Ranveer Singh, who played the role of Allaudin khilji - the most ruthless man in the movie Padmavat.
To get into the skin of this character , Ranveer confined himself to his house and cutting off communication with almost the whole world. He got so much into the character that even after the film , his mannerisms remained the same. Getting out of this dark, intimidating mindset wasn't easy for him. The film was shot for almost a year, so sustaining the Khilji persona was very challenging for him. It affected his reactions and behaviour towards people. Which is why his friends advised him to get help in emerging beyond Khilji. He is visiting psychiatrist to get rid of the Khilji influences.
Not only Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone - the lead actress also was highly disturbed when she shot the final Jauhar (self immortation) scene and she had to seek medical help to come out of it . That scene transferred her to her past life where she had battled depression and this disturbed her highly.
So scenes does effect an actors health. Although TV actors do not get so much of time to dwell into the characters depth once the show kicks in but mentally it must be affecting them somehow or the other.
And yes seeing all this it effects the viewers mind also. I have been getting vindictive ideas recently for the character Simmi and I realised all these ideas are serials which I have been watching. So my mind has been tuned to it. In fact even doctors say that the reason why today's kids have become so violent and aggressive is because we expose them to such environment due to TV - cartoons like iron man etc , toys such as gun, etc. So yes everything around our environment effects us psychologically so one should be careful of the content which they show.
