As far as I remember there were no major incidents of violence in the country; Tamil Nadu was a bit more susceptible and there were incidents of small time arson and rioting in parts of TN including Chennai... I remember this as my mum was visiting Chennai during this period and was out shopping at the Nallis and when the news broke, the shops were shut and my mum along with other shoppers had to be escorted out of the back door after the initial shock had died down. I was in Mum and frantically trying to reach her and remained worried until she returned home safely in the late evening..she managed to call me from the shop when the jammed phone lines were free. It's etched in my memory like it were yesterday. As for Gujarat.. I don't know if there were incidents of violence but there was some disruption of transport in some places so I am assuming that aspect may come into play
