Naresh Agarwal, former Samajwadi Party leader, who was considered a strongman of party chief Akhilesh Yadav, on Monday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. Agarwal's move to dump the party, of which he was the general secretary, and join the rival saffron party came days after actor-turned-politician Jaya Bachchan was chosen over him by the SP for re-entry to the Upper House of Parliament. The seven-time MLA from Hardoi constituency announced at a press conference in New Delhi that he was joining the BJP. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal was also present at the occasion.
However, a massive controversy was triggered after he used disparaging terms for Jaya Bachchan, deriding her as 'Bollywood Dance Girl' or 'filmon mein nachne waali', prompting External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to condemn his remarks.
