Hey guys,

I happened to watch some EK interviews over the past many weeks. There is something that I gathered I wanted to share.

First of all, her message in the recent TED talk with SRK was that she advised women to never stop working after getting married! Of course the first question that came to my mind was why Pragya and other heroines did so, right after marriage. On the contrary, EK is not even considering marriage because she is into her work etc. and doesn't feel it's right for her to get into marriage. The point is marriage is no big deal for her (while it is so so big for Dishas and Pragyas and all those heroines!).

Of course a cigarette company owner doesn't have to be a smoker. I heard from the Apple company head once that he doesn't let his kids into iPad much because it's addictive. Coke company owner doesn't need to be gulping liters of coke everyday. So I wouldn't expect EK to be the woman she portrays on screen. And she sure isn't.

But then she mentioned something interesting. She said the TV media which reaches crores of audience has become like a mass media. It does not cater to urban audience specifically anymore. And that's why for her creative side and for a different kind of audience, she makes Alt Balaji, movies and whatever she can. She also talked about how repetitive TV shows have become in a certain TRP demands and barriers.

So, the point is, it's not like EK or her creatives do not realize the monotonous way of general TV soaps. They do, but then its a big audience pool for them and it brings them a lot of business. So they do what they have to do! This will continue as long as that mass audience want it and do not reject those soaps.

Just thought to share since I have read 10000s of complaints about CVs and EK in social media. But then I felt like EK rather wants this kind of crowd to watch her movies (which are quite bold and contemporary, at least some of them) or alt balaji!

One more thing that she said made me crack up and that made sense too! She was like- after 50/100 episodes, she will be like what to write now!🤣 Makes sense how nonsensical soaps become after a certain point! But then EK's argument is there are people who enjoy this kind of entertainment and give ratings on par with IPL for these soaps. So, why should she stop making such shows!!!

Hey Tia,
I have always been curious about Ekta as a business woman specially since her venture into movies like LSD, Lipstick under burkha , the dirty picture, once upon a time in mumbai, Udta Punjab, shoot out series and now with alt balaji, she has made a wonderful and thought provoking shows like test series and Bose

She introduced the K soaps which did lead to regression of TV content in the long term but when she started it all with Tulsi, parvati and prerna-they were some very strong characters who stood for right without really being doormats , self respect mattered more than love but with other phs coming with more regressive content , her shows took a nose dive and all those leaps with multiple marriages were forced upon on us.

. I think EK has the ability to bring out great and gritty ideas without the usual melodrama, but due to TV being restrictive because of the audiences it caters to, she doesn't really care about it much , she tried bringing better content with few of her shows -pkhjd and ajeeb dastan , but it wasn't really accepted by the audiences .

It is pretty evident EK wants to be the ruling queen , so she doesn't mind churning not so great content on TV if it keeps her on the top and helps her stay relevant. I really can't blame her much but I hope she keeps up with the web series and movies.

PS: have you seen PINK, after I saw this marvel of a movie I came to know that it was made under Rashmi sharma productions , eek the PH that has assaulted our senses with shows like saathiya and simar (which make kkb look like a masterpiece) M.aybe this is how it works, these brilliant women have to keep ideas under wraps for the sake for not offending sensibilities of aam junta.

Yes Neha! She did mention that she tried to do different stuff and failed at it. So she is back to what brings TRPs! While she categorically denies calling her heroines regressive (she gotta defend her own soaps lol), she does mention they may not be urban cup of tea, but they are for the masses. So yeah the regular TV crowd loves this kind of portrayal of women, so the TV business mints out of it. It's sad society is like this but that's reality too. We are far from true women empowerment on a large scale. But I do feel good about EK herself, the way she has stood out as a strong woman and laid way for many other such women.

TFS. Love TED talks and did not know EK did one. Interested to see what she has to say when I get the chance.

Btw, the forum looks empty these days. Stopped watching the show years ago; am sad to find out that our beloved show did not recover.

Miss the old days with all of you all!

Nice topic! Its not only EK but the women who act in her shows are also a far cry from the characters they portray.. but it seems they are fine with enacting them as long as they have a flourishing career..
In bollywood we have a new set of actresses who refuse to settle for silly stuff.. so over a period of 10 yrs we witnessed such drastic change in female leading ladies at the movies..

Movie business is slowly getting hit by digital content.. most of my frens groups are into Netflix and I see ppl moving away from dish or cable TV..
sooner or later TV media will also demand better content and then EK will be forced to think beyond her 50-100 episodes..

Coming to target audience, not to forget the craze and popularity these shows seem to have overseas, with ppl from different age groups and countries, cultures.. as long as this business brings her good returns, this is a safe bet for her.. think about it, they show the same stuff recycled and people still lap it up.. I personally got fed up of such snail paced story, and left the show for good..but looks like there is a section of audience who dont mind spending 30 mins per day watching same stuff over and over..

Hey Tia
For me Pragya has to be the most regressive character by EK, her old fl's were more brave n not doormat. Her target audience are women who watch these shows n make it successful.
EK is mastermind in this business, she earns crores by feeding this crap.
And FL are freeloaders who don't work after marriage n instead of bringing peace they bring nuisance 😆 .

There was a time when kkb was entertaining n I used to live but now it has become absolute crap 🤢 .

It's so true that after 1000 epis the show's quality goes down. I can see that in KKB. It's just crap now.

I know I'm not the target audience for this show because there is nothing in it I can relate to after the first track. At least it used to be entertaining with great acting and good humor. Now it's so lousy.

How this show is leading in trp's is a mystery. Lately, imo, it's appealing to the lowest common denominator in viewers 👎🏼- a few touchy feely basic physical romance between the leads and a female lead who is shown as a savior of kids and a non-existent Munni at the expense of her own life. It's too silly to even write or comment about for me. Such an absurd show getting 3.0 and above ratings for content like this. I wonder if they measure the ratings only in some areas; I don't think these ratings are nationwide.

Ekta knows human behavior well. She knows the power of habit. People watch out of habit or because there's nothing better. She's cashing in on that. Viewers with low expectations from a show are making a lot of people very rich.

Hey Aashu! Nice to see you after so long. Couldn't agree with you more about the show. EK was a part of the women special episode of TED talk india nayi soch series hosted by SRK. It was mostly episode 5.
