As usual I'm pretty late to read all the good posts!!
Frankly my very first reaction was wow the writers did wonderful job in connecting the various back stories to the main leads n how sometimes we relate to other's situations.

I did feel bad for Bela but It probably took the back burner. But your topic really made me think ( so glad it did)

Yes, Anand is shown to be progressive but how much. I see his eldest daughter talking about marriage all the time. But he never seems to ask her to take up a job it study further. He has always asked Bela to adjust to how the elders of the family want her to be. He disliked her hiding the ristha talks from Taiji. He sure has his boundaries. He sure is much open minded than his brothers.
I agree he was too harsh on Bela
Plus it was a question of trust being broken. Assuming if the same trust was broken by a man working for him for several years from hiss workplace and assuming Anand reacted the same way .. asked that man to quit... would we still question him being progressive... I know a wife and a third person are two different things altogether ..but person's reaction for a trust being broken judge him being progressive or not???

Just being a Devil's advocate!!!

Ps- sanfan wonderful analysis. You give deep thought into situations and articulate it so well when you write. Loved your replies in doc's post too!!!
