Nothing was special about the day, nothing at all. Not even the fact that it was New Years' Day. Hostel life suited the bookish Anu. No one bothered her much, and it gave her the time to talk to her friends at leisure, without anyone being on top of her all the time.

Today, though. It was New Year, and her birthday. The wishes had poured in, and her friends had told her, that, unfortunately, they would not be able to make it that year. Sighing, she opened her physics book, and began her daily studies.

Her phone rang, and she picked it up.

"Hello?

"Hello? Miss Anu? The voice was vaguely familiar, but she dismissed it.

"Speaking.

"Actually, this is an emergency call. This was the last dialed number on a Miss Charvi's phone. So we called.

Anu's heartbeat went racing. Emergency?!

"What happened?

"Miss Charvi has had a minor accident. We have dropped her at her flat, but she is unconscious, so we thought we need to let her friend know.

Anu's heart sank. "I will be right there.

In 20 minutes, Anu was paying off the autowallah who had dropped her outside Charvi's house. It was late evening, and she made her way up the stairs in trepidation. The living room was bathed in darkness.

"Char? Milu? She assumed Mili must have made it back, they shared a flat. No one answered her. She blindly felt for the switches and turned the lights on.

She was deafened by a cry of SURPRISE!'. Blinking her shock away, she stared around the room. What she saw nearly made her pass out. Her friends were there, but apart from them? Guess who was in the birthday surprise? Any guesses?
