BIRTHDAY BUMPSThe car was moving swiftly on the smooth road and seated inside was a warring couple at loggerheads for the umpteenth time since morning .
"Shravan. .please yaar. ..mooh fulaana band karo. Why can't you just understand for once that Deepti is important to me and that there is no way that I would miss her birthday party?" Suman was exasperated by his grumpy behaviour by now. She was right when she named her husband The Incredible Sulk'. With that size and that scowl, he literally lived the name.
"Would you terribly mind if I ask you when on earth did she become so important to you?" There was no way Shravan was going down without a fight here.
"Since DeltaDawn started writing on us...Can you deny the fact that she portrays us like a dream!! I have fallen in love with you multiple times more after reading all the stories that she's written on us!!" Suman sighed dreamily much to Shravan's chagrin.
"Kahe ka dream! ..Delta portrayed me as spineless in Incompatible and confused in Fate, nervous around a child in Prelims, and don't even get me started on Lost. ..there I was both heartless and a border line depression patient and she bumped me off in the epilogue, slow claps for that. Hide and Seek might have taken her to the zenith of satiety though..I was emotionally tortured and shown as someone who is incapable of sharing my wife's professional dream. She used to make me walk away from every discussion. Har kahani mein mujhe ya toh jee bhar kar dukhi karti hai ya phir tumhaare peeche peeche daudati hai yeh tumhari favourite Amreekan writer." Shravan was on an incessant rant as he stepped up the accelerator. Suman decided to keep mum at least till they reached the venue.
"OK. .look ..we will come back to this later. Now I want you to be at your best behaviour inside. By the way, she's the same female who made me run behind you to Dehradun in Hill Station and also gave us two of the beautiful nights of our lives in Hunger and New year. People love to read what she writes. Aur tumhaari sundarta ka varnan kitne ache shabon mein kiya hai Delta ne har kahani mein , kam se kam uska udhaar hi chuka do khush dikhkar." Suman was glaring at him at a range unparalleled and Shravan decided to go with the flow lest his wife makes him sleep in the study yet again this night.
As they walked into the apartment, Shravan couldn't help but feel at ease. There was a certain warmth in the ambience, a certain comfort that was effortlessly exuded in the whole set up. The guests were all casually dressed , the music system was belting out Amitabh Bacchan songs and a strong smell of cheese pizzas wafted in the air. Shravan thanked his brainwave of going deglam for the night...a thin cotton shirt over a pair of blue denims and branded watch along with his favourite pair of comfy shoes completed his looks. Just a splash of his favourite musk..and the dude was out to kill. He looked over to Suman who looked beautiful in her powder blue anarkali. The only other time he had seen her in that dress was during the ethereal Preeti Bhoj night. .and sigh left his lips unknowingly. .his love for his woman was slowly crossing the limit of sanity.
A loud shriek disturbed the tranquillity of the moment for him. A young woman in a long sleeved blue top and black denims approached them extending her hands with an apparent glee on her face. Her huge eyes were behind a pair of glasses that made her look even more cuter. She looked perfect with that angular face and flawless skin. Such was the pull in her big smile that Shravan found himself reciprocating almost immediately.
"Hi, I am Deepti. .DeltaDawn for you guys. I am so glad that you guys could make it at such a short notice." She had still not stopped smiling even as Shravan could feel his jaws beginning to hurt a bit.
"Hi. .I am Suman and this is my husband. .."
"Shravan Delta completed it for her. "You see, I am kind of obsessed with you guys. OS, FF, SS sab likha hai aap logon par. Your likes, dislikes, appearance, mannerism. .Matlab aap dono ke rag rag se waakif hoon main. Bas aapko janam nahi diya hai, warna maa hi hoon mai aap dono ki." She said as she broke into a laughing spree at her own joke.
Suman laughed along while Shravan made a mental note of leaving earlier than he had planned.
"Please have a seat. .umm. .what can I get you? Pepsi, Coke, Nimbu paani, mock tail , adrak ki chaai?"
"Mocktail ke saath adrak chai bhi hai?" the ever culinary expert Suman could not resist asking.
"Yup. ..you see those girls deep in conversation in that corner. One of them, Resh. ..ginger tea is to her what cheese is to me..water is to fish, wada is to paav, Shashi is to Tharoor..."
"Samjha humko DeltaDawn. ..got the point." Shravan interrupted.
"And Nimbu paani is for that petite one?" Suman was still curious totally oblivious to the death glares Shravan was throwing her way.
"Oh no. .that's Eva. .she's not very picky. Aisa yeh chahiye. Woh chahiye. .that's only Resh. We know about her in such detail only because she loves talking about herself."
"Umm. ..Sumo I guess we should actually sit down. My legs could do with some rest." Said Shravan as he got busy looking around for a place to sit.
Delta gave a glance at his legs and without any warning burst out laughing shaking her head sideways.
"I am terribly sorry." She apologised to the appalled couple. "It's just that Shravan your legs always reminds me of Eva. ..you see. .please don't mind. .she finds your legs a little funny...
"Funny?" Shravan could not contain the sharp edge in his tone.
"Matlab. ..a tad disproportionate and a tad too long. Also a tad too thin." Delta smiled throughout the not so comforting description of the hunk's legs.
"Well, I am a tall guy and us tall guys usually...
"Bola maine usko. ..ki beta. ..tall guys have paper thin legs. Amitabh Bacchan ko hi le lo. Ab giraffe ko bakri ke pair toh nahi honge na." Shravan cringed as another round of laughter hit his ears, this time in doubles since Suman had joined Delta as well.
"Giraffe. .bakri...Resh kahan hai. .giggles attack coming up." Delta was falling short of breath since the spams of laughter wouldn't die.
"Don't bother..."came a bored voice of Shravan. She's already laughing. "Usne hamaari baat itne door se sun li?"
"Resh ko baaton se kya matlab? Usko kisi bhi baat par hasi aa sakti hai. Kabhi Kabhi toh hum dono Good morning' bolkar bhi has dete hain."
"How interesting." Shravan remarked.
"Ahaaan...your trademark sarcasm. I'm an expert at it too. Though I use humour to let it out."
"Umm...let me go grab something to eat for you Shravan." Sumo had already chalked out her escape route from the apparent explosive situation.
"By the way, shirts suit you. You should wear them more." Delta remarked.
"Sure. .erm. .just out of curiosity Delta, what's my fate looking like in fate? You see, I am quite fond of myself in that story. I get to play my childhood dream of being a fireman in it. I was expecting you to give me some action packed scenes where I would be saving lives and probably suffer a burn or something on my body or face...and then come out of that ordeal like a hero..you know?"
"Nope. It's a love story. I can never let anything untoward happen to your face. Look, its not my fault that you are so pretty and that we can't think beyond saving that beautiful visage." Delta narrowed her eyes almost looking like Suman for a second there.
"Pretty? Beautiful?"
"Yup...you are pretty my dear pretty boy. Those lashes can model for a mascara ad. I love your lips. Resh loves your neck, Eva loves your eyes..we discuss your features in detail."
"That's objectifying me."
"Suits you. Like I said, not our fault pretty boy. Ab chalo like a good boy join me in greeting my friends, there's Sunain, Anu, Dolly, Maddy, Tii. .they all write fabulous fictions on you two and also excellent with gifs, they are here in spite of having their exams . .then there's Lubs who writes poems and fictions both, Arpita makes beautiful VMs of you guys, Sneha, Mayu n Marina who keep Shraman alive on Twitter, Sanjh who's here in spite of having had a major event in her life just a couple of days back. .you should read her Destined, the girl practically made you a stud from a vegetable on a wheelchair. ..then of course there's Resh and Eva ...they have done their bit too. Come on let's meet and greet them."
"Sure ..but can we meet them in a bit?"
"Sure. But make sure you do."
"I am very hungry. I am big on diet food. You have any?"
"That's only between Mondays to Fridays, salad, kale juice, fruits, low fat dairy...and sadly today is weekend. .cheese and chocolate day. So, there's cheese pizza, pani puri, chat, chocolates and more chocolates and a few more of them. ..and also Shreekhand for dessert" Delta looked smugly at the spread on the table..
"Shreekhand? Yuck. ..I hate it. What's Eva's favourite sweet?"
"Resh loves it. So I had no choice. Don't let her know. She's a highly biased writer. ..makes you look good in every situation. .if she even has a whiff of your hatred for Shreekhand, your role will be smaller than that of Mausa jigs of EKDV fame in her stories. As it is she's a whiny writer...whines a ton before she writes. And Eva's favourite sweet. ..you don't listen do you? Eva never gets a chance to discuss her likes or dislikes...Resh is busy feeding us with her details always." Delta rolled her eyes all the way back to her brain.
"Hmm...so Resh is a whiny writer...how about you?"
"Oh me...I love to write..it's a part of me. .like adkrak chai is to Resh, water is to fish, wada is to paav, black eyes are to a certain ghost, 99 is to Sachin. ..Haila. ..99 is to Sachin..that's a good one. Resh kidhar hai?" As usual she laughed at her own joke totally oblivious of a cringing Shravan around.
"Don't bother. ..she's already laughing over there." Shravan muttered as he walked away planning his escape from the weirdest party he had ever been to leaving a laughing hostess behind.
DeltaDawn was dead sure that she had heard him say 'Weirdos' under his breath.

"Yeh kya hai?" Mom snatched the paper from my hand.
"Checklist."
"Woh to dikh raha hai, par kis cheez ka?" She asked while adjusting her glasses on her nose.
"Woh..."
"Oh my God, beta don't tell me, tune yeh list banayi hai...for..." And her laughter erupted, echoing down the corridor, causing Papa to appear at the door of my room.
"Kya hua bhai...kis baat pe itni hansi aa rahi hai ? Koi humein bhi batao." He plopped down on the bed beside me.
"Aapki beti checklist bana rahi hai...Matlab ab humein ladko ko yeh list dikhani padegi agar match hota hai to baat aage badegi, agar nahin to..."
"Hmm. Fair enough. Yehi hoga." He smiled. "Chalo ab taiyaar ho jao woh log aate hi honge."

"Yaad rakhna, he should not prick his nose"
"Clothes. Zyada flashy ho to strictly No No, show off se shaadi nahin karni, aur agar zyada LS ho tab bhi No No. Are bhai bande mein class to hona chahiye. Aisa na ho kuch bhi uthake pehen liya."
"Shoes, juton se pata chalta hai aadmi kaisa hai."
"Oh haan khaane se pehele wait karna, dekhna tere liye wait karta hai yaa phir toot padhta hai. Always remember never marry a bhukkad."
"Yeh bhi dekhna, zyada hi friendly ho raha hai uncle aunty k sath ya ignore kar raha hai, if he behaves like either of one sidhaaa reject kar dena..."
I sighed while applying the lip gloss, remembering the advices of my friends.
"Suman beta niche aaja...woh log aa gaye." Maa knocked. I sighed again, cursing the person who actually invented this marriage thing, the culprit who ruined many lives.

"Are aao beta, yahan baitho..." The mother, smiled at me too sweetly.
Haan abhi hans hans k bakri phasao then halal karo.
"Ji aunty..." I gave her my best smile ever.
"Woh mera beta pahunch nahin paya, abhi aa jayega. Tab tak hum baatein karte hai."
Bolo ladki dekhne aa nahin paya ab tak, itna hi important kaam tha to na aata. Hmm. Irresponsible.
"Haan log shaadi k baad derse ate hai, mera beta pehele hi. He will be a good husband then." The father laughed, and of course Papa joined.
"It's not like that, kahin phans gaya hoga. Warna mera beta bahut punctual hai" she assured me.
As if I care!
"Toh beta...aur batao..." She continued.

A loud honk, and aunty proudly announced the arrival of his only son. Until then I had been informed about his education, his work, his nature. In short how my life would change if he would agree to marry me.
"I am so sorry for being late." A booming voice said.
Then there he stood in all his glory. A brown check shirt, a pair of old ripped jeans and of course those shoes. Looked like he had walked around the world in those. And cherry on the icing, muds. All over him.
Sigh!
Yeh ladki dekhne aaya hai! Nonsense.
I was so disgusted that I didn't even look at his face.
"Wow food, thank God, you have no idea how hungry I am." He sat there, laughing.
"Haan beta lo na, tumhare liye hi hai." Of course Maa was overtly happy, she had always liked these type of people, who actually wouldn't think twice before opening their mouth.
Bhukkad.

"Beta tum dono akele kuch baatein karna chahte ho to..." His mother was all into this plan of making us talk and then get married immediately.
"No. We are okay here." Huh! I was too clever for that. I would never ever marry a person who had come to see a girl like this.
"I would like to talk." If I wasn't this pissed, I would have complimented him for his voice.
"Haan beta jao na... Suman beta show him our garden, ab it's late but still it's good outside."
*

"You seem angry." His voice was soft.
"Not really."
"Are you sure? And yes, when I am talking to you please look at me." He sighed, clearly frustrated.
"Hmm tell me." I turned towards him.
Isn't he too fair! And tall too. His eyes are too brown. Too straight nose, even his lips are too pink for a man. See how odd looking he is. And his hair, he seriously needs a haircut.
"Are you sure you are not angry?" Then only I realised I was looking at him that too for a long time.
"Yes I am. But I have a question for you."
I had to ask him. How could he be so oblivious?! He had come like this?! Like really like this?!
"Sure, now you are talking." He folded his hand on his chest, I noticed, his muscles were ready to pop up the shirt he was wearing.
Show off!
"Why have you come here like this?" I neglected his breathtaking smile which broke through hearing this.
See what am I saying, too beautiful for a man. I already hate him.
"Hmmm, you know na what I do?" I paused looking at him. Sure his mother told me everything, but I actually didn't listen carefully.
"Mmm...sorry...I didn't..."
"Hmmm. I had to go to a slum area. There a little girl accidentally drank phenyl. She was critical, but you know these people, even if they are dying they won't go to hospital."
The way he was talking, he seemed very much obsessed with his work.
"So this mud I got from there."
A tight slap on my face.
"But these shoes I mean..." Slipped out of my mouth before I could even think.
"These are not mine."
"Not yours?"
"I had to give mine to someone."
"I don't understand... I mean..."
"Let's not get into that. Bass that's not mine." He stated.
What he had not said, I understood, he actually gave his shoes to someone more needy.
Then I looked at him, he actually was handsome. And as they say handsome is what handsome does. He actually proved that.
Intrigued I asked more about his job, his studies, his friends, he was one of those people who never cared about his surroundings. A man of this stature would have been arrogant, rude, but he was not. His eyes sparkled, his lips carved, he was truly handsome.
"Are you okay?"
"Y-yes...I am...am sorry..."
"Sorry for what?"
"I thought you are... actually sab aise...your attire...your behavior...I mean..." How stupid I was. But somehow I needed to tell him.
"Hahahaha.."
"You are laughing!"
"No it's just... funny. See Suman, main bahut siddha sadha aadmi hoon. Mujhe yeh sab nahin aata. But yes, if you agree to marry me, I can promise one thing, I'll make sure you get everything you ever wanted in life. I'll make sure this smile of yours will always be on your face. I'll make sure..."
"Shravan...main..."
"Suman isse pehele tum kuch kaho I have to say something."
"Okay."
"Suman, ek ladka tha, jo chhup chhup k ek ladki ko dekha karta tha. Jabhi bhi school jaane k liye nikalti thi, woh ladka apne gate pe aake khada hota tha. Ladki jab high school jaane lagi, aur woh ladka college, tab bhi she was the only one he saw, she was the only he has loved. Ladka London chala gaya, bass ek darr k sath mein, ki wapas aye to woh ladki use nahin mili to? Phir pata chala us ladki k parents uske liye ladka dekh rahe hai. Ladka bahut khush hua, chalo koi aur nahin le gaya. Ladka apne parents baat ki, aur ladki k ghar rishta bheja. Aur ladki gusse mein almost use reject karne hi wali thi, jab uske Maa ne baat karne ko kaha."
"Yeh to..."
"I have always loved you Suman. Always."
*
*
*
"Kitni der tak baat karoge tum log? Andar aao."
"So kya decide kiya?" His mother asked knowingly.
"Hum zara humari beti se baat karke..." Papa always knew how adamant I was.
"I'll marry him."
"What!"
"I'll marry him." I smiled.
Papa hugged me, "are you sure?"
"Haan Papa, sure hoon. Shayad isse pehele itna sure kabhi nahin thi."
Don't we girls go for the good looks, we always tend to love those well dressed, well mannered ones. And here when I was looking for my knight in shining armor, I actually got one who didn't care how he looked even when he could have.
As they say, Face is nothing but a few tissues and bones put together... Love the soul and only then will you find your soul mate in him.
