I think we need to redefine what a leading lady in films should be. Not every Indian woman is hot or glamorous. Add to that women past a certain age are considered expired. Vidya Balan may not be a superstar, but roles like Tumhari Sulu give ordinary Indian women a relatable celebrity and lead lady.
Sandra Bullock's most critically acclaimed role was for playing a mom. Bridget Jones is beloved for being a chubby and frumpy British woman. Kathy Bates in the iconic Misery was a mentally deranged aunty. Frances McDormand in Fargo was a character that probably inspired Kahaani. Octavia Spencer who rocked The Help and Hidden Figures is no glamor doll.
We need more women playing aunties. We need more aunties becoming mainstream. Aunties need not be someone who is dated and expired. Aunties can be great roles too.
- Sincerely
An old aunty
You are right.
I apologise for my post. I am glad that Tumhari Sulu worked. And I agree that we need to normalize women of all age and sizes. I would like to say the same thing about men too. I would like to see more average men in movies too. Someone relatable.
I made this post because, all of Vidya's previous movies were flopping and the reason I felt was because she was always doing those non - glam homely roles which were not getting any profits. With Tumhari Sulu, finally she was able to break the jinx. My mother loved it.
I am not a hater. I just want to see women succeed , and as is the general situation , glamourous roles fetch more money. But since Vidya has now carved a niche for herself, this does not apply to her. Women have got someone relatable now, and I think mostly her fans are women which is a wonderful thing.
My sincere wish is to have crazy women fans supporting every actress, like how Salman Khan has mad fan, I want all female celebs to have that sort of crazy fan following or even more.
