7^th August. For many an ordinary day. But for some it was a special day. Because a show began that day. A show that has proven that relationships are not as simple as they seem. A show that has shown time and time again nature vs. nurture. A show that has no white and black. A show that has powerhouses of talent from the cast to the crew to the producers to the director. A show that has set a first trend for many things. Yes. 7^th August was the beginning of the epic drama series known as Rishton Ka Chakravyuh or RKC to its many fans.

When Sanjot Kaur and Bhupinder Singh decided to launch a production house, Rolling Pictures, never did one expect them to start their journey with such a unique tale of power, money, betrayal, relationships, mystery, intrigue, and drama. Never once did one think that a show could be presented with real characters, relatable situations, simple dialogues, a multitude of great actors, and a tumultuous story.

RKC has proven that shows can run based solely on a good storyline and plot. It has proven time and time again that powerhouses of talent can work so well together that there is no "acting left. It has taught life lessons through every character. It has made every character relatable to some degree. It has allowed one to understand each character even as it moves at a good pace. It has shown that an episode does not need freeze frames, grey-shades, or repetition to drive home a revelation. It just needs to engage viewers and viewers will themselves know when something is key.

Today, RKC reaches 100 episodes. That is why today we all get together to celebrate this lovely mark. May RKC continue to entertain us. And may it run its full course with character arcs, story arc, and an open ending. Because relationships never end.

Part I - The Twins of Lal MahalThe story of Rishton Ka Chakravayuh begins on a dark, stormy night with a woman, Satrupa undergoing labor pains in a huge palace called Lal Mahal. Simultaneously downstairs, there is a grand puja with several priests headed by the family priest to the goddess Durga. They are joined by other members of the family, Baldev, Gayathri and Vikramaditya and their staff. Satrupa gives birth to twins, a boy and a girl. But unknown to anyone, the girl is spirited away by Damo, Satrupa's handmaiden and given to Pandit Murari Pathak to raise. The girl whom he names Anami is raised in Benaras by Murari Pathak and his wife Madhoo with their son Lakshya (Ladoo). Her twin brother is named Vatsalya Vikram Singh and raised as the heir to Lal Mahal and the family business, Royal Steel.
The story picks up again, 17 years later. The twins who grew apart have had different upbringing. Anami grows up in a simple Pandit home on the ghats of Benaras. One striking physical feature of Anami's is her matted dreadlock braids which she considers a blessing from the Jatadhari God Shiva of whom she is a devotee. Those braids are lovingly tended to by Panditayen. She is a feisty girl who spends her days helping out in the temple, doing a form of ancient martial arts on the ghats of the sacred Ganga and fighting fake sanyasis with her brother Ladoo. Anami's life is almost perfect except the fact that she regrets not being the biological daughter of Madhoo Pathak whom she fondly calls as Pagli Panditayen'. Anami feels an emptiness every year on her birthday which she regrets because she thinks it is for her biological mother who she considers selfish for giving her up.
On the other hand, the birthday of her biological twin brother is celebrated with great pomp in Lal Mahal. Vatsalya has grown up with all the privileges of a royal heir. But with the privileges come the threats. Vatsalya has been the victim of attempts on his life since he was a small child and thus he has a body guard who accompanies him at all times, even to boarding school. To pray for his safety, his mother Satrupa fasts for two days before his birthday every year and gives a blood sacrifice to the goddess Durga by cutting her finger. On Vatsalya's 17th birthday, his grandfather Vikram Singh decides to appoint him heir to Lal Mahal and Royal Steel and the entire family decides to got to Benaras to perform the Pagdi ceremony.
Like many royal families, the family of Lal Mahal have secrets and one of them is Narottam, the illegitimate son of Baldev. The family considers him Baldev's mistake and it has led to Baldev being disinherited. He is treated very different from Vatsalya the legal heir. Narottam wants to accompany the family to the Pagdi ceremony to Benaras and is forbidden by the elders of LM until Vatsalya who considers him a brother says he would not go until Narottam accompanies them. The family reluctantly give in and leave for Benaras.
The Pagdi ceremony of Vatsalya is celebrated with great pomp and a grand puja is held on the day which happens to be his birthday and Anami's too. During the puja, a sacred diya meant for Vatsalya to light and set afloat on the River Ganga is lit by Anami by mistake. Damo also sees Murari Pathak on the Ganga Ghat and Anami with him and hides herself to keep from being recognized. She is so troubled that she goes to Guruji for advice who gives her a Raksha Sutra, a thread of protection made of Rudraksha beads meant for protection and asks to give it to Vatsalya to wear after puja.
One of the other nasty secrets of a royal family is fight over succession for wealth and power and assassination attempts. Pujan, Baldev's cousin who lives in LM always wanted his son Avdoot to be the heir so he sets up an assassination attempt of Vatsalya in Benaras.
Vatsalya roams the Ganga Ghat in the evening and finds a girl sitting forlornly. The girl is Anami and the twins meet without knowing who they are to each other. They get to talking and discover it is their birthday and find things in common. They talk easily and confide in each other without knowing why. Anami talks about how she feels empty on her birthday and Vatsalya confesses how he feels complete in Benaras but has a sense of loss when he leaves there. While they sit talking, Pujan's assassins try to pull Vatsalya under water to drown him. Anami jumps in to save him. Vatsalya's bodyguard appears just then and manages to save him. Vatsalya ties his Raksha Sutra around Anami's wrist not as a prize but as a gesture of friendship and says if he had a sister she will be like Anami.
When Satrupa hears of the attempt on Vatsalya's life she becomes furious, finds the would be assassins and tries to get the name of the person behind it. But they say they just got a name and contract. She orders them to be drowned in the Ganges. This incident spooks Satrupa so much she forbids Vatsalya from going back to boarding school. Vatsalya who finds the environment stifling decides to run away and he does so leaving his phone behind.
Dawn finds Vatsalya sitting on the roof of a bus with a group of people enjoying his freedom. Meanwhile in LM Satrupa brings breakfast on a tray to Vatsalya and tries to wake him up to patch up with him. She finds his bed empty and summons security in distress. Pujan meanwhile makes calls to people and says Vatsalya should not come back to LM.
On the roof of the bus a shadowy, burly figure sitting a few rows behind Vatsalya suddenly stands and is revealed to be his bodyguard who gives him his phone with Satrupa on the other line. Vatsalya agrees to come home if all his demands are met and Satrupa agrees. A car is sent to meet Vatsalya and Tej Khan the bodyguard to bring them home. While in the car, Vatsalya and his mother Satrupa are still speaking when her favorite song comes on the radio. One of the traditions of Vatsalya and Satrupa is singing together, especially old Hindi movie songs and they do so now. While they sing to each other on the phone a truck hits the car at the intersection on Vatsalya's side. The car flips over and over, the phone gets abruptly cut. Satrupa drops the phone on her end and screams. Vatsalya is dead.

Part II - Anami in Lal Mahal The family is shattered over Vatsalya's death. In their grief, relationships start to unravel. Baldev informs Satrupa that their relationship is over because Vatsalya is no more. Satrupa tries to kill herself and Damo saves her in time. She decides she has nothing to live for and to leave LM. Satrupa is packing to leave when Guruji comes to her and reminds her that she is not nirvansh (Childless). She also gave birth to a twin daughter. Guruji was the one who told Satrupa to hide one of her twins. Guruji had also hidden from Satrupa where Anami was, how she was and forbade her from contacting her. Now he tells her that Anami has grown up in a Brahmin family, in the house of a disciple of his. He asks Satrupa to bring Anami to LM and fight for her daughter's right.
Pujan has his friends in the media run stories regarding the future of Royal Steel and who will inherit it to create an atmosphere of uncertainly in LM. This prompts Vikram to ask Baldev to adopt Avdoot and appoint him as heir in Vatsalya's place. A date is chosen for Avdoot's pagdi ceremony. Meanwhile Satrupa leaves for Benaras with Damo to bring Anami back. She goes to the house of Murari Pathak, meets Anami and tries to convince her to come back with her. Both Panditayen and Anami oppose Satrupa vehemently. But when Satrupa brings in the cops and threatens the Pandit family with jail, Anami reluctantly agrees to accompany Satrupa to LM since she is 17 and a minor. Anami tells the Pandits that she will stay in LM exactly a year, till she turns 18 and becomes a legal adult. She asks them to think of that as her Vanvaas (exile). Anami , Damo and Satrupa reach LM just as Vikram is about to place the Pagdi on Avdoot's head proclaiming heir. Satrupa loudly screams no and the entire ceremony is brought to a halt. She recounts the story of the birth of her twins and how she hid one of them on the advice of Guruji. Damo and Guruji back her up but no one in the family believe Satrupa including her husband Baldev. All accuse her of bringing in a fake heir in order to usurp the property. Anami drops the Pagdi in the sacred fire intentionally while the family watch in horror.
The CBI is brought in to investigate the death of Vatsalya which has been ruled a murder. The lead investigator Adhiraj wastes no time in mounting an investigation and questions the people of LM. Adhiraj and Anami slowly form a relatioship of trust and friendship. But the same cannot be said of Satrupa and Anami. Sleeping under a tree, refusing to eat are some of the ways Anami shows her displeasure of being in LM during the initial days. Each person in LM is assigned a person to see to their needs and Anami's person is Poonam with whom she bonds. The only other person who accepts Anami in the LM family other than Satrupa is Gayathri through an incident that reminds her of Vatsalya.
Satrupa enlists the aid of Adhiraj to prove that Anami is the legal heir to LM and wants to do a DNA test. Adhiraj is surprised but agrees and gets the required paperwork which Baldev refuses to sign. Meanwhile owing to the chaos of who is the heir and the stories in the media planted by Pujan, the investors of Royal Steel get anxious and call for meeting with the family. During the meeting, things become heated and Vikram has a heart attack. The family rushes him to the hospital. Gayathri uses this opportunity to ask Baldev to sign the DNA papers. Anami too hopes that the DNA test will prove she is not the child of Satrupa and Baldev and encourages him to sign the papers. Baldev signs setting in motion the process of DNA test for paternity of Anami.
Through a series of events in which Anami tries to substitute her blood with Poonam's and Pujan tries to sabotage it by substituting someone else's, both end in failure. The blood tested belongs to Anami and she is declared the biological child of Baldev and Satrupa by the courts. Anami is shocked , makes plans to run away with the Pandits and move from Benaras. As she is leaving LM, Anami is prompted by a desire to know who Vatsalya is as he is the reason her life has had so much upheaval. Using the keys stolen from Satrupa, Anami enters the constantly locked room of Vatsalya in secret. She has not seen a photo of him until now and drops her phone she is using as a torch to turn on the lights. As she gets up she sees the huge photo of boy she met at the Ganga Ghat, the one she tried saving from an attack, the one who gave her the Raksha Sutra as a gift which mysteriously broke one day, who told her if he had a sister she would be like Anami. It was Vatsalya, her twin brother. Anami breaks down on the floor in grief. For the first time she recognizes that the emptiness she felt her whole life was for Vatsalya, not Satrupa. She spends the night reading his diary and decides not to leave LM. She is resolved to get justice for Vatsalya, find his murderers and then leave LM.
Anami's days are spent teaching martial arts to a group of kids who live in LM, bonding with Poonam, spending lots of time in Vatsalya's room and most of all fighting with the residents of LM, chief of which is Satrupa. Anami is repeatedly told by Satrupa that she tolerates her shenanigans, but if she crosses a line, the Pandits in Benaras will be in jail. These threats and Satrupa's insistence that she is Anami's mother while to Anami Panditayen is mom is a source of constant conflict. In this hostile environment and Anami's loneliness enters another person. Narottam has always been treated badly by the residents of LM and when Anami hears of his story, the part that champions the underdog in her, bonds with him. This plays into the hand of Sudha, Narottam's mother , Baldev's former lover who currently lives in a mental asylum and keeps tabs on LM through Narottam. Anami accompanies Narottam frequently on his visits to Sudha unknown to the LM family.
Anami joins college where she befriends Tanya, Adhiraj's sister. But not everyone is nice to her. A group of kids egged on by Avdhoot make fun of Anami especially her braids. They are reported to the Principal, but Anami declines to press charges and thus they form a friendship. But not everyone is her friend, two of the previously hostile group egged on by Avdoot again, makes Anami have an accident in the chemistry lab while Pujan arranges for her to be kidnapped. Anami succeeds in calling Adhiraj before she falls unconscious and is saved in time from the kidnapper. The court reviews Anami's attack and decides that if she feels unsafe in LM, she could come under it's protective custody. This would also freeze the assets of LM and Royal Steel.
Meanwhile Royal Steel is the target of a hostile takeover orchestrated in secret by Pujan, the face of which is Mr.Oberoi. While the family struggles to make sense of what is going on, Vikram gets a phone call asking him to meet with someone who could possibly help. It turns out to be Dheeraj Pandey (Dhiru) who happens to be a former employee of Royal Steel ousted by Baldev and Pujan by framing a false case of embezzlement. He is also the father of Tanya and Adhiraj. Dhiru wants 50% of Royal Steel as payment for his help to which Vikram agrees. This goes in front of the board for ratification where Satrupa surprises everyone by choosing Dhiru. Pujan and Kamini have no choice but to choose Dhiru and the takeover is defeated.
Anami wants to celebrate Durga Puja in LM. The family reluctantly agree after Gayathri joins her. On the eve of the puja, the screws in the palanquin on which the goddess will ride are loosened by Pujan and his henchmen so that it breaks during the procession depositing the goddess on the ground. This is considered highly inauspicious and will cancel the celebration. During the procession, the whole family, friends, devotees dance in joy in front of the goddess. One of the workers who bears the palanquin has a thorn pierce him on his barefoot and cries out in pain. Anami squats on the ground to take the thorn out and as she rises sees the screws fall on the ground. The entire crowd gasps in horror as the goddess starts to topple then recover in happiness as Anami rises holding the goddess. She starts walking the rest of the way holding the goddess on her shoulders. As she falters due to the weight, Baldev and Satrupa support her in carrying the goddess. Vikram, clears the path of burning coals that Anami steps on and the family joyfully brings the goddess home. The courtyard of LM echoes with the sound of laughter, dance and music. The whole family dances in joy and throws Sindoor in the air. But a great hush descends upon the festivities due to the entry of one person, Sudha.
It turns out Anami and Narottam had gone to look for Sudha after receiving a phone call that she has escaped from the asylum. Sudha manipulates Anami into bringing her into LM by threatening to commit suicide. After a major showdown between Anami and the members of the family mainly Satrupa, it is decided that Sudha will stay in LM. Adhiraj uncovers Sudha's secrets and warns Anami about her. But those and the friendly warning of Gayathri and the hostile warnings of Satrupa are ignored by Anami who is convinced Sudha is the wronged party and is determined to give her justice.
To combat this, Satrupa decides Anami needs a distraction. So she goes to Benaras to bring Ladoo which she does so by threatening Panditayen. Anami is surprised to see Ladoo and accuses Satrupa of bringing him to control her. Ladoo adjusts well in LM, paying cricket, eating his favorite foods, doing Math and learning English. He bonds with Satrupa unlike Anami and manages to bring a smile to her face which had disappeared after the death of Vatsalya. Ladoo's arrival successfully prevents Anami from spending time with Sudha. Gayathri and Satrupa seize this opportunity and Gayathri's illness to plant doubts about Sudha's mental stability in Anami's mind. Sudha decides to scare Ladoo fearing a growing wedge between her and Anami by telling him a scary story which distresses him putting further doubts in Anami's mind. Satrupa capitalizes on this and makes a deal with Anami by which Sudha who was brought into LM by Anami is moved into the servant's quarters by Anami herself.
The CBI team and Adhiraj meanwhile find evidence that Sudha's brother, Purushottam presumed dead is in fact alive. Narottam hands Anami a file containing Vatsalya's dreams of building a school and hospital for the families of the workers of Royal Steel. Anami goes to Vikram with it who tells her he does not trust her to complete this as she will leave in a year. Satrupa finds out about the lengths Anami will go to secure Vatsalya's dream when she and Anami unwillingly collaborate to write a story for Ladoo. The next day Anami is presented with an offer. Vikram and Satrupa present her with a deal whereby they agree to make Anami's request of making Vatsalya's dream true if she would get Sudha and Narottam to sign papers that say they do not have any connection to Baldev. This drives a further wedge between Satrupa and Anami who continue to fight. Anami takes the papers to Sudha and Narottam and to Sudha's horror, Narottam decides to sign. This brings Purushottam out of the cold and he starts visiting his sister in secret.
Ladoo goes to winter camp and seeing his bonding with Satrupa, Anami gets annoyed and threatens to forbid him from going. An angry Ladoo runs off in a huff and hides from Anami. Meanwhile Purushottam who has come to meet Sudha disguised as a regular laundry delivery worker is overhead by Ladoo planning to kill Anami. Ladoo tries to escape but is seen by Sudha and Purushottam who drug him, stuff him into a clothes bundle. Ladoo is driven right out of LM by Purushottam in disguise.
The disappearance of Ladoo creates a pandemonium in LM. After several hours of search, Anami finally breaks down and asks Satrupa for help. Satrupa promises Anami that she will get Ladoo back hale and hearty. The CBI is called in to investigate. Adhiraj and his team bring dogs and search all corners of LM, including the garden. The investigation confirms their fears. Ladoo is kidnapped.

Chakravyuh is that kind of a story where each and every character is layered. Each character has a proper place in the story and each character is written with a specific purpose. This analysis is done based on the story so far.
SatrupaWhat to talk about this character. We still don't know what the true face of this woman is. It is said she is a woman with seven faces and we don't know which face get revealed at what point. A grieving mother, a shrewd business woman, a calculative bahu, a caring mentor, a pained wife or a woman searching her identity among all these roles. We are yet to see. She is everything, but yet nothing. It is her journey to find an identity beyond those definitions that define a woman in a patriarchal society. Satrupa is the one that holds Lal Mahal and its ways.

BaldevWell the disinherited son of Lal Mahal. A man who sees his wife is given his place by his father. A man for whom decisions are announced, nothing asked. A man for whom a second chance is not given to prove his mettle and at every point he is insulted and berated for his relation with a woman in whom he had an illegitimate child.

VikramThe patriarch of Singh family. Baldev's father and Satrupa's father in law. A firm believer of traditions. Orthodox in many ways. Believes for the existence of LM and its way anything can be forsaken. Tells for seven generations nothing has changed about LM and nothing will change also.

GayatriVikram' s wife. Unlike Satrupa she oozes feminine charm and can manipulate her way into people minds. If Satrupa attacks from front and people can tell she will attack, Gayathri attacks unanticipated. She always supported her son and his ways. She loved her grandchildren but could never accept her bahu handling business affairs over and above her son.

PujanBaldev's cousin and a man who wants the throne for his son. A man who will bend any rules, go any extend to get that done. He doesn't openly show his ambition, but at every point he fools around with Vikram and Baldev cleverly manipulating his intentions.

KaminiPujan's wife who dreams about becoming the owner of LM and making Satrupa her servant. Supports her husband in all his schemes of attaining the throne.

VatsalyaThe heir of LM who is no more. Loved and adored by everyone we understand him through the diary notes which his sister Anami reads. He was the thread that kept his parents together. He was the light of LM and when he went LM plunged to darkness. He went leaving his dreams incomplete. Even then every time he is mentioned the screen lights up.

AnamiThe girl child given away by Satrupa immediately after birth based on guruji's advice. The reluctant heir of LM who is forced to come there by her mother post her brother's death. A teenager who carries so much hatred against her mother who abandoned her at birth. A rebel who wants to do everything which Satrupa tells her not to. A confident and emphathic girl when in right sense can work miracles. It is her journey to find her direction and destiny.

AvdhootPujan's son who wants to be the heir. Doesn't have much merit except for the surname. He is ruthless and support his father's ways for attaining the throne.

DheerendraFormer worker of Royal Steel who was accused wrongly by LMwasis. A man who spend time in prison for the crime he didn't do. A man who has come back seeking justice and currently owns 50% stake in Royal Steel. Vikku confides to him, Satrupa trusts him in teaching Anami, but Baldev hates him.

AdhirajDheeru's son and CBI officer investigating Vataslya murder case. He forms a friendship with Anami. A very much conflicted young man like Anami herself. Through the guise of CBI he is also seeking justice for what happened to his father in the past.

TanyaDheeru's daughter who is like a butterfly in the garden. Anami's classmate and the thread that keeps Adhi and Dheeru together. A girl full of life who is currently having an affair with Avdhoot.

SudhaA scorned woman who is waiting to get her revenge from LM. She is the love of Baldev and mother of the illegitimate child Narotham. A very calculative woman who doesn't mind going to any extend for getting LM and RS for her son Narotham and if she doesn't get that willing to destroy everything in that place.

NarottamMost conflicted character of the story. A child who is not acknowledged by his father. A child who is not loved by anyone including his mother. His rights and wrongs are conflicted. Still he cares for his half sister Anami and battles his heart and head when it comes to her. He is the most prominent pawn that can change the tables in this Chakravyuha.

Pandit and Pandhityan (Murari Pathak and Madhoo Pathak)Anami's foster parents who live a normal middle class life. A very noble couple who has given good teachings to her adopted daughter as well as their son.

LadooPathak's son and Anami's kid brother. A very lively child who is perceptive and adapts to change. When he is in the screen it looks like patakas will explode just like that and you smile unknowingly.

PurushottamSudha's brother who is presumed dead. He was also the former employee of LM, who now helps Sudha in extracting her revenge against Baldev and his family.

PoonamAnami's confidante in LM. A very sweet girl who will go any extend to support her didi. She is Anami's shadow.
