Arun sighed, putting the packing away to the side "i have a grandaughter, Kanak Rathi, after her parents death we sent her away to a boarding school, after some time she fell in love with a highly religious man, after they got married, Kanak wanted to continue her dancing career, and he wanted to follow his religion"
Nina nodded, intrigued "and then what? Where did your family go"
"Uma, her husband left after finding out the priest who did their marriage wasn't a priest, she dances every night to the same song in hopes Uma will come back to her and marry her again, when he left he told her he never loved her, and we all told her to walk away, find someone else, but she has never lost hope for him, so my family left and i stay here to look after her"
Nina wiped away a tear "how long has he been gone, do you think he will come back"
Arun looked up at the calender "today marks 5 years, no one knows anymore, but if Kanak believes then i will to"
Nina stood to wrap her arms around Arun "ill see you tomorrow morning Arun"
Patting her on the head he nodded as he watched her leave.
The hall of the mansion was lit with many candles, the windows bare, no curtains.
The light of the moon shone brightly giving the room an essence of calm.
Mausam ney lee angdaayi aayi aayi
The weather stretches
Lehraake barkha phir chaayi chaayi
The rain is creating ripples and its covering all
Jhoka hawa kaa aayega aur yeh diya buj jaayega
There will be a gust of wind and this lamp shall be extinguished
Many women began to dance as the music got louder. All women but one wore black, heads covered they danced around the many people that had came to watch.
Silsila yeh chaahat ka na maine bujhne diya (x2)
I haven't let our love (here the lamp is symbolizes it) extinguish
Oh piya yeh diya naa bujha hai naa bujhega
Oh Beloved, this lamp hasn't extinguished nor it will be extinguished
Mere chaahat ka diya, mere piya, ab aaja re mere piya
This is the lamp of my desire, My beloved, Come to me now, My beloved
The woman who stood in the middle of the other women stood alone wearing red. Removing the scarf from her head the woman looked into the light.
Whispers could be heard of her name "Kanak"
Oh mere piya ab aaja re mere piya (x2)
Oh My beloved, Come to me now, My beloved
Is diye sang jal raha mera rom rom rom aur jiya
With this lamp each part of my body is burning, and so is my heart
Ab aaja re mere piya oh mere piya ab aaja re mere piya
Come to me now, Oh My beloved, Come to me now, My beloved
Kanak spun around on her feet, her scarf spun with her. Lifting her hand she picked up a candle in one hand as she continued to spin around the many guests, dipping low then coming back up.
Her dancing, always the most beautiful, but only for one person.
Faasla tha doori thi, faasla tha doori thi
There was a distance, hence there was a separation
Tha judaai kaa aalam intezaar mein nazrein thi
The atmostphere was of detachment and my eyes were waiting
Aur tum wahan the tum wahan the tum wahan the
And You were there, You were there
Jhilmilaatey jagmagaatey khushiyon mein jhoom kar
Shining, sparkling, swaying happily
Aur yahan jal rahe the hum (x2)
And here I was burning
Kanak handed a candle to a woman as she ran to the window, pushing it open she looked up to the moon as she wiped away her tears.
Putting her hands together she closed her eyes, once again praying for the man she will always love to return.
Phir se baadal garja hai garaj garaj ke barsa hai
Once again the clouds have started thundering, after thundering they
are showering rain
Ghoom ke toofan aaya hai par tujhe bujha nahin paaya hai
Even the hurricane came along, but it couldn't extinguish your quench
Oh piya yeh diya chaahe jitna satay tujhe yeh saawan
Oh beloved this lamp, even if this rain troubles You
Yeh hawa aur yeh bijliyaan
So do these winds and lightining
Oh mere piya ab aaja re mere piya (x2)
Oh My beloved, Come to me now, My beloved
As Kanak turned, she saw the many couples dancing together. Once again she felt like her heart had broken.
Running outside she continued to dance, alone, in hopes that the lord would see her plight and call her love home.
Dehko yeh pagli deewani duniya se hai yeh anjaani
Look at this crazy girl, who is unaware of the world
Jhoka hawa ka aayega aur iska piya sang laayega
A gust of wind shall come and take away her Beloved
Oh piya ab aaja re mere piya
Oh My beloved, Come to me now, My beloved
Silsila yeh chaahat ka na maine bujhne diya
I haven't let our love (here the lamp is symbolizes it) extinguish
Oh piya yeh diya
Oh beloved, this lamp
Silsila yeh chaahat ka na maine bujhne diya
I haven't let our love extinguish
Oh piya yeh diya
Oh beloved, this lamp
Aye piya piya piya
O Beloved
As Kanak continued to dance, her scarf slid from her neck, falling from the balcony it landed on somebody.
The man pulled the scarf off his head and scrunched the scarf into his hand.
Lifting the scarf he lifted it to his nose, the scent of chandan very strong.
Throwing the scarf to the floor he walked into the mansion.
Kanak fell to her knees in the rain as she began to sob heavily.
Was love meant to be like this?
