I have heard, Lakshmi Kant-Pyarelal were well known for their folk based music composition. Afterwards, I am not sure.
Recently, I have only heard of Bhangra. But earlier movies used to have foot tapping music based on folk music of different regions ( Chalat Musaphir Moh Lia Re, Ud jab jab zulfe teri)

Many a times, when folk music is needed, music directors have replaced it with classical (eventhough lyrics use folk language). For example, in the movie Lagan, female lead (who is a simple villager) sings Radha Kaise Na Jale in pure classical form.
SLB usually has one song with folk theme. Still he is more biased towards classical music. I wish, he gives equal importance to folk music.

Meanwhile, can you list some of your favourite songs based in folk music?

I felt Ghoomar's music is classical, though lyrics have Rajasthani folk touch (similar to Radha Kaise Na Jale).

In BM, only Malhari was folk music based. Rest are classical.

Authentic Kashmiri folk, isn't it? To me, even Preity looks like Kashmiri here (more than Alia Bhat).
