Rajmata says Bhansali had agreed for a screening which he backed out.

"No filmmaker should take liberties of distorting the facts which will not acceptable for the people of the country, BJP MLA and member of the royal family Diya Kumari said on Wednesday.

Jaipur: Erstwhile royal family of Jaipur has warned that the film Padmavati would not be released if it does not depict history authentically and takes liberty with facts.

"No filmmaker should take liberties of distorting the facts which will not acceptable for the people of the country, BJP MLA and member of the royal family Diya Kumari said on Wednesday.

"The tale of Maharani Padmavati of Chittor and the 1,600 women who committed Jauhar along with her is a testimony of extreme valour and courage of which history has rarely been witness. Any attempt to distort the history or twist the facts will be a collective insult to the women of this country who have immense pride in the sacrifice made by Rani Padmavati and the brave women with her, she added. Interestingly, Deepika had been hosted by erstwhile Jaipur royals while she was promoting Bajirao Mastani another Bhansali film that had attracted controversy for similar reasons; distorting history.

Rajmata Padmini Devi was also present at the media briefing. She said that when Bhansali started with the shooting of Padmavati he had agreed to screen the film before us. He had also consented to screen the film before the launch of any song or trailer. However, he has backed out of his commitment, she said.

The latest development comes as film distributors in Rajasthan have refused to release the film in cinema halls in Rajasthan till "the matter is sorted between the Karni Sena members and Bhansali.

Former Congress MLA Pratap Singh Khachariyawas has also demanded ban on the film.

Petition in Supreme Court seeks stay on release of Padmavati'

Amit Anand Choudhary | TNN | Nov 8, 2017, 22:09 IST

NEW DELHI: Controversy over Sanjay Leela Bhansali's epic period movie 'Padmavati' has reached the Supreme Court with a petition filed by a group of persons seeking stay on its release for allegedly hurting sentiments of the Rajput community by "distorting and twisting historical facts".

The petition, filed through advocate Somesh Chandra Jha, urged the court to intervene as the filmmaker has "wrongly depicted" Rani Padmavati in the movie, causing widespread anger among people belonging to the Rajput community. It alleged that screening of the film in the present form would cause law and order problem.

"The trailer of the film shows Rani Padmavati doing a Ghoomar dance. The depiction of Rani Padmavati in the said dance sequence is contrary to how the dance is performed traditionally. The Queens never used to do Ghoomar and the thumkas (hip movement) themselves and the revelation of skin by actress Deepika Padukone, in her portrayal of Padmavati, has hurt the sentiments of the Rajput community," the petition said.

The petitioners, coming from different walks of life and belonging to the Rajput community, contended that in the garb of creativity, the producers of the film had taken undue liberty and completely changed the historical facts, which is highly objectionable. They submitted that the portrayal of historical legends had to be done in a historically accurate manner and creativity could not be used as a pretext to malign or sully their image.

"Rani Padmavati was known for her pious lifestyle and her character was beyond reproach but in order to serve the prurient interests of certain sections of audience, filmmakers have shown the Queen dreaming about Ala-ud-din-Khilji and in love with him. It is reprehensible that in order to earn some profit, the producers have stooped to such a level wherein they have stopped caring about our rich cultural history and have indulged in her character assassination. This has created great angst among Hindus in general and the Rajput community in particular," the petition said.

The petitioners have pleaded the court to set up a committee of eminent historians to vet the film before it was allowed public screening.

The film, which is scheduled for release on December 1, has been at the centre of controversy with many groups protesting against its screening. Rajput Karni Sena, an organization of the Rajput community, and Sarv Brahmin Mahasabha, a Brahmin community organization, have decided to oppose the film's release. Thousands of people took to the streets on November 3 and blocked roads across Rajasthan's Chittorgarh city to protest against the film.

Such nonsense drama going on ! Kinda unbelievable ! The whole thing happened like around 700-800 yrs back and it wasn't even documented immediately but only after 100+ yrs of all these happening. Whether Rani Padmavati did ghoomar or had hip movements during the dance etc - how TODAY's successor would know it SO accurately ? It's a movie and not a documentary, do they realize that ??

This whole thing feels like a deliberate attempt to watch this movie for free and to establish too much of self-importance by the Karni Sena or whatever. Before this movie was announced, not much people would know about the brave incident of Rani Padmini. They should be thankful to SLB for bringing this story into the front and that everyone would come to know about the grace she carried. Instead they are doing this.
