So this post has nothing to do directly with this show, but I really wanted all of you guys to give your opinions and ideas here, because this is a universal, and contemporary problem that is highly prevalent on indian tv. This is mostly for forum activity, but also to find your opinions on this issue.

I have read so many articles on the internet about this topic, and in every article, it is producers, channel heads, and writers that blame the audience for the content shown on tv. But is the audience really to blame?

If I gave my opinion on this, I think that regressive content and illogical tracks with poor quality story telling is a trend that was started by none other than ekta kapoor herself (mind you, she was one of the biggest culprits in these articles to blame the audience). She has created numerous trends on tv, which gained her shows so much success and ratings, that other producers and channels followed suit to practically create a formula along the lines of what have been shown in her shows that they use in every show, and now this is all the audience has become habituated to see; women being mahaan, abusive men shown as romantic heroes, a mother-in-law can never get along with her daughter-in-law and the mother is always shows as being possessive about her son, men misunderstanding their wives and separation tracks.

The audience has becomes used to such melodramatic shows, and tv is also over-saturated with these kind of shows that progressive and creative content is no more than a needle in a haystack, which either goes unnoticed by the audience, or audience who notice it just find it boring because it doesn't conform to the melodramatic formula of shows they have become used to watching.

Another reason is that viewers who want to watch something different and progressive are not able to watch them by their own will as the tv controls are mostly in the hands of women, and so if they want to watch something different they have to watch online. Can't blame the women for that considering like I said, progressive content is a needle in a haystack and there is so much regressive and over-dramatic shows on tv that they can't seem to digest watching anything different.

My opinion on this topic is that the audience have become used to seeing regressive and un-creative content with the same used and recycled tracks by ratings-hungry channels, and producers and writers are made to follow a formula to create the same regressive content they think the audience WANT to watch, but in actual, they are just too used to seeing such shows to make a shift in their preferences.

For there to be change, more producers need to stop making less regressive and melodramatic shows, and be more creative and progressive with the shows, so that it comes to a point where regressive saas-bahu and family dramas are the needle in a haystack, and tv becomes saturated with progressive and creative content, with progressive content becoming more noticeable to the audience. When there will be less kitchen politic shows on tv and more creative content, who will even pay attention to regressive content? The audience simply need to be made used to seeing certain content for them to be able to watch it. Open your eyes channels!

So I've given my long-winded opinion, but what do you guys think? Who do you guys think is responsible for the poor quality stories and regressive content shown on tv? The audience, or channels/ producers/ writers? Do you guys also agree with my needle in a haystack theory/ idea in regards to the ratio of progressive to regressive content existing on tv? Do you also think the audience has merely been made habituated into watching regressive content by the people who make these shows? What do you guys think should be done about it?

Audience and then others mostly TRPS based tracks.

Nice post Sammy😉 some non-senseless tracks are never seen in Naamkarann . Characters are very unique in their place and n bet on tv we see lots of butuchered for trps or tracks. 😃 Naamkarann show' s&shown its originality as it is - Avni orNeil.. are perfect examples. 😛
My love is Neela ma from past to present. A perfect example.

I agree with whatever you said about EK . She is the one who had created such regressive , melodramatic and logic less tracks in shows and latest edition to the list is bringing up bull , honeybee , peacock etc and turning it into ichadari . I have never dared to even try that show . You can add SSK too in the list . At least in case of Nagin you can agree things happen to be strange and bound by evil magic but if you take SSK how in a normal household every single thing opposite to nature happen . The biggest weapon they have in hands is crocodile tears which gain TRP audience sympathy and they make FL into a doormat for the same reason where the same girl is shown to be head strong and has no nonsense attitude .I don't want want to speak anything about the ML in ITV . They are used just to romance and manhandle FL . What I can't ever bear is memory loss tracks . I don't blame audience here as they bear all these only because they are used to it . But we can't totally blame producers for holding it's because of audience appeal they bring such tracks coz when such tracks were tested audience were different . At present though people watch voice is raised against such illogical and melodramatic .

50--50 is to be blamed both makers & the audience. As you said audience are used to watching such regressive content that anything new content is not welcomed. & moreover pyschologically maybe they can connect to such setro typically characters. but these days many things have changed & makers should also keep that in mind and stop showing such foul contents that passes wrong message to masses. agreed even these days evil sasu ma/ possesive moms previls but itz handful. at this present situations showing such contents/ irrelevant/ not logical/planning -plotting/ killing contentents should be stopped. Media must take up social responsiblity on prohibting to show such contents. audience dsoes have the mind set to accept new contents, but media is too trp oriented that they still stick to those stero-types.. many shows like short running shows like dhaleez, pwo & others had good story line but had low trpos. maybe bcz of the slot! even in the prime slot we have good content shows but parellely if ekta's or guls show is lunched plp wish to see their shows rather than good content shows. leading the makers to shut the good contened shows in short duration. some shows starts off well with good content.. fab actors but ultimately end up in old sterotypes like planig/plotting/killing bahu/ possive mom/ 2 shadis/ memory loss trac k etc ...only when the media also changes their conent (esp ekta & gul), gradually audience mind set will also get that mindset to accept such things. we don ask for long runners rather even if its for a month .. if it has good content ( story) .. actors(if possible) itz worth the watch.
iam happy that namkaraan is not those sterotypes .. though the show is less acknowladged (not given awards/ promotion) iam happy to say that this show is quality show, with quality content & fab actos! & itz worth the watch unlike the other shows with crap content!

Interesting question. But I'm more inclined to blame the show creators and producers. Because as an audience, many times I'm aware that the show is kinda stupid and illogical but you watch it anyway simply because those are the only options you have. Personally I can't relate to a lot of shows on Netflix despite great content. I relate better to a Hindi serial even though I know the show is stupid! Tv shows are addictiive because you get attached to the characters since you see everyday, that's why as an audience we become forgiving. So even when a track is total BS most of us will still watch it because we have become attached to the show and in any case there's little else to watch. So it's up to makers to be a little more creative. I definitely think it's possible to get TRPs with a realistic drama. So to use that as an excuse to make an illogical melodrama with regressive ideas is a terrible argument. The other problem is they all want to have the show run forever. They don't have to. They can make sequels , seasons of 20-25 episodes each or repeat a hit pairing/ cast in a new show if needed.
Makers need to invest more time on developing good quality content and also finding the right cast. TRPs will follow automatically

Like personally for me with NK I watch it only for Avneil. I also like neela, Ali and DD. So tomm if the show ends I'd be upset because I can't see Avneil anymore. But if Aditi and Zain come back as a couple in another show I'd watch it only for them.

The only couple I loved and watched who have ever come together for a show again are rajat tokas and mughda chapekar, who were in dharti ka veer yoddha pritviraj chauhan, and then were cast together again for dharam veer, but that was also quite soon after the former show finished, and sagar arts produced both shows, but dharam veer didn't last long. Other than that, very rarely does it happen that popular on screen couples, despite public and fan demand are ever seen again on screen. The reason for this is many, such as some actors being on breaks while the other actor may still be active in tv, schedule issues or other commitments, then also that sometimes the actors must both agree to liking the script and character before they agree to sign the show. Most of the times, the actors may have a difference in preferences on what they want to do in terms of the type of shows and characters.

I know for one that I want to see zain with jasmin bhasin again on screen, but a lot of Tashan e ishq fans want to see jasmin with sidhant gupta again, but although I was a fan of the latter pairing in the show, zain and jasmin had amazing chemistry before it was revealed and confirmed that jasmin and sid's character's were end game and the main couple, disappointing many of zain's fans.

I blame ektaa maiyya and the saas bahu trend she bought with her K drama's..
Psycho khan and rashmi chutiyapa sharma followed ekta's footstep and the result :- indian tv has gone down the drain

I 100% agree with everything you are saying. Even though I didn't watch indian serials that much like I do now back at that time, I distinctly remember indian tv did not have all this regressive content that is here now, then a whole string of ekta kapoor shows came along that were titled 'K' and all seemed to have a common theme of mahaan female leads becoming perfect wives and daughter-in-laws, plastic surgery, generation leaps, and all kinds of weird tracks and trends she started, and then I noticed other shows coming out that delivered very identical tracks after her shows became immensely popular. She literally started all of this. And also the likes of rashmi sharma, rajshri and gul khan are following suit with ridiculous tracks that are regressive and been seen before in ekta shows, but sometimes even worse. 2015 was a year full of bride and couple swaps too. There has been an influx of the same exact type of shows and tracks since ekta kapoor came out with her highly successful shows. The audience has now become used to seeing all that, hence the success of kumkum bhagya and it's spin off (although the spin off is actually more enjoyable than the former for now.)

Audience are to be blamed. Also the industry as a whole.

The same ek makes aweome web shows and tv shows like balh and ajeeb dastan...balh was trp topper but ajeeb? How many even know about that show? Shows keeps stretching (yhm kkb) cause people watch it, no show runners will keep a show running if nobody's watching. There were shows like khichdi sarabhai and sidhrat which were amazing and it took us decades to realize that those were amazing shows. Simply, we are morons and probably that's why we don't have any varities. You pick up any show across any regional, after initial different woman rights story it's same old marriage kids saas etc. There is a show promo going on in star plus, ekyavan, the promo goes like Kon karega isse shadi cause the girl is Tom boyish, as if no other work or life ambition a woman have apart from marriage. So that's the audience tv catering and those who don't want to watch that will forever be disappointed.

I think what we need as viewers and show runner is to cater to different audience and expect ratings accordingly. you can see how shows are a khichdi of all demographic- a young girl to cater to teenagers, a strict mom/dadi for older ladies. Tv don't cater to men cause they think men don't watch tv, bs. If they tweak their content based on men I am sure there will be a lot of change content wise. A huge change is needed and I am glad 3/6 month shows coming with different stories, like entire Sony shows, colors- ishq mein marjawa, etc. Also there should be one award show which is really authentic, which recognize good shows. When they give a bad actor best actor award and a comedy show as most popular just cause powerful PH how can it have credibility? People watch BAFTA, Golden globes and so many other shows cause of credibility, let us have that too.
