# Priyasi... Nahi Samne
One of the most beautiful song sung by Hariharan and equally beautifully composed by AR Rahman. One word that comes to my mind as this song plays is... Ethereal
Though the other songs of this movie were chartbusters, this is the one that tugs the strings of the heart for me.
We have loads to share towards our awe for Hariharan and his singing prowess... lets reserve it to the PMs. On to your VM with my perspective...
Dekho chhod ke kis raste woh jaate hai
The visuals start with the The Indian Boho pompom and gotta made little piece of jewellery that screams the name - "Gauri" in its colourful voice, calling out for the much needed attention that the equally hippie hubby of hers is ready to give. Holding them over his fingers he looks at the array of colours that she holds within this tiny piece... While she twirls adorning herself with her veil, happy at being free- a chiraiyaa in the truest sense... Only to have his hand clasp over hers.. Stopping her for a moment.
Saare raste vapas mere dil ko aate hai
Saare Raste...A moment of realisation dawning, as they stand away yet connected with the clasped hands...
Vapas.. turning to look back at each other
Mere dil ko aate hai... letting her know through the silent talk of their eyes that wherever she would go, it would lead her back to his heart
Priyasi!
Calling her his beloved, he goes to unveil her, while her tender hand stop him midway and she does just what she decided on... she leaves in a jiffy... knowing well that staying behind and letting him have his way would only weaken her resolve... And yet again he is left with her little piece of jewellery... Was he just dreaming?... Was she just a figment of his imagination?...(Now this is the best part of the song for me. That word there and the way it is sung with such vibrato... it leaves me breathless in the most best way possible. Sorry cannot leave without praising Hariharan)
The vocal interlude of the Maestro AR Rahman then delves in sync with the visuals of the passion evident in their stark actions and subtle reactions... again for it to be intercepted by him looking on to her colourful Jhumka that he twirls between his fingers, wondering yet again about the happenings. The flashes of her childlike play as she tries to fight the sun that happens to disturb his slumber, finally giving in and getting along with the sunlight in teasing his sleep... until he wakes up to see her doings.
Priyasi!
He calls on to his beloved at a faster pace knowing that she has left... feeling her dearth and the darkness that surrounds him now. Glad you showed the stark difference between of how it was when she was around- the light and colours and after she left- darkness and devoid of any colours (This here is let out in an urgency... Hariharan at his best)
With the solo beats in the rhythmic pattern we have Om turn to look at the door and her entering and then just as he realises that she has come the tune shifts to a happy note with her nearing him.
Nahin samne
And the realisation strikes..
Nahin samne yeh alag baat hai
She isn't there in front of him... but one look at the fallen Morpankh has him think otherwise.
Nahin samne yeh alag baat hai
He lifts the Morpankh and looks on... driven to a memory that they created not so long ago
Mere paas hai
A memory that calls for the day she became his inspiration
Mere paas hai tu, mere paas hai
The memory of him sitting beside her as she posed as a subject and he rightfully studies her
Mere paas hai tu, mere paas hai
The fluttering of the delicate Morpankh reminds him of the equally delicate subject of his, and the only remaining testimony of that memory being the painting that rests in his studio.
Mere saath hai, mere saath hai
As he steps back ... with each step realising that, She will be with him forever... remembering their first breezy pass-by
Priyasi!
The fuzzy visuals of their togetherness encompasses this one words that is taken in one long breath... Beloved!!! The gradually increasing tempo is so beautifully justified with the gradual building up of their story. What I liked here was most of the visuals here of their togetherness was from the times they were acting it out.
The Chorus humming has the visuals of their actual closeness, those moments where they did what they did because they wanted to and not because they were supposed to. The culmination of the chorus has this beat drawing us to a brooding Om looking at the moon... With him knowing what would she be doing.
Tera naam maine liya hai yahan
Amidst the memory of her happily twirling in his company and being playful he calls out to her
Mujhe yaad tune kiya hai wahan
Knowing well enough that it wouldn't even take a minuscule of a second for her to remember him and drown herself in her tears... looking at the very same moon
Tera naam maine liya hai yahan
With him turning away from the moon... the guilt of her tears eating him up
Mujhe yaad tune kiya hai wahan
With her reaching out to the moon as if reaching out to him... to console him
Bade zor ki aaj barsaat hai
Its raining just as it rained the other day
Bade zor ki aaj barsaat hai
The day when they were themselves... Gauri- who wore her heart on her sleeves and Omkara- who cared for ever bleeding heart... who cared for her heart.
Mere paas hai tu, mere paas hai
As he sees the rain trickle down without her by his side, he knows she is still with him
Mere paas hai tu, mere paas hai
Remembering her and their togetherness through the memory that now he holds so close as he held her that day.
Mere saath hai, mere saath hai
Grasping the raindrop within his fist... holding on to the memory... holding on to her
Priyasi!
The determined look that he has as he looks at his fist goes well with the increasing tempo. The flashes of her becoming a part of his family... ritualistically
The tune then changes into a challenging one just like the visual wherein he is challenged by his doubts.. her questions... her firm stand on getting her answers... and just as she asks where does she stand in his life... realisation dawns upon him with the melodious humming reminding him of what she is to him, in his eyes and in the eyes of the one she worships... her Sankarji. As the humming subsides the reality comes to foreplay with her ultimatum of never coming back if she leaves this time.
Bichad ke bhi mujhse juda toh nahin
He look up from the fairy-tale book that he once read out to The little Pari... remembering how Gauri was more into knowing what happened to the princess and if she ever had her happily ever after with her prince charming.
Khafa hai magar bewafa toh nahin
A paradox wherein she leaves him with what he asks for... that he be alone. Leaving him without knowing what happened to the princess.
Bichad ke bhi mujhse juda toh nahin
He realizes why that little bit of story was so important to her.. It wasn't the princess, it was her she had meant all this while.
Khafa hai magar bewafa toh nahin
The stark difference of how he extinguishes the candles speak loud about his turmoil and the agony he goes through without her by his side.
Mere haath mein hi tera haath hai
As an inspiration she had placed her hands in his.. the subject had given herself to the artist
Mere haath mein hi tera haath hai
So much was her belief in him that even in the state of deep sleep her hands could only find his and grip on to them... he was the only she ever needed.
Mere paas hai tu, mere paas hai
That was the time she was near him in the truest sense... even in sleep his closeness is what she felt at ease with.
Mere paas hai tu, mere paas hai
As her tendrils swayed.. he made failed attempts at blowing them away... only to resign to the thought that her being near him was enough.
Mere saath hai, mere saath hai
The way she held his hand in a clenched grip... let him know... she would never let go... she would be with him. As he finally had the tendrils out of his way, tucked behind her ears.
Mere paas hai, mere paas hai
He took in that she was here to stay... to be his.
Mere saath hai, mere saath hai
And that was peace to his restless soul. As they slept holding on to each other... All that mattered was she was near him and with him
Mere paas hai, mere paas hai
As he awaken to find himself alone on the recliner with the same shawl on him and taking in her absence.
Priyasi!
He looks around to see if she is at her playful self... teasing around him... only to realise
She was there near him ... with him ... as if she never left. She never had to be near him to be with him. She was his... And he was Her... That's where it all soared to like the last vocal of Beloved... into distances unknown...like an echo.. to the ones who have loved and been loved.
*** And my perspective ends here for now***
Tammy Dear, đ¤
You have such an enchanting talent. VMing has so much to it. Its just not editing the clips. It goes beyond that. To feel the pulse of the song and chose the scenes that go in sync with the lyrics and most impossibly with the composition of the song. That takes a lot my friend.
Treasure this penchant that you have for VMing and I'm happy I came across your Jhonka hawa ka thread.
And your Pms and the links you left behind did surely make my day :)
Thanks Tammy...Keep VMing and Keep Smiling
Till we meet again
Loads of love and hugs,
Sneha
P.S: Couldn't leave without this...again not me but the credit lies with the creator
