Hey guys!!

I have had countless discussions with people over what is needed in a character to make him an ideal male protagonist (in other words an ideal hero). And then I thought what better place to get more opinions than this forum! 😊

So I ask you to describe the qualities and characteristics that, for you, would be in your ideal male protagonist.

Much love,
M.

IDK if there's an ideal person for me.. but there are some type of characters or personalities that I find very appealing... and they are :p

1 - The guy who has zest for life, is passionate about widening his horizons, open minded, has curiosity about everything you know, has interests in arts, politics, science, you name it! And, is a life-long leaner... a student of life! :) also, loves, has a loving heart.. doesn't take himself seriously.

2 - The OVER PRACTICAL/REALISTIC guy, with a dry and a sardonic sense of humor. You wonder if this guy even has emotions, but... he does.

3 - The idiotic saint, I'm borrowing this partly from FM Dostoyevksy's The Idiot and Brothers Karamazov, he's really the ideal man, if there is any, for me. He's pure, accepting of life, LOVING, has an open heart and mind, he's nothing if not loving. Spiritual, selfless, gentle, easygoing...

4 - Any genuine "normal" character, TBH.. but they must be an honest character, with all their flaws :) ..these BW heroic characters never appeal to me

These come to my mind..

will write more as I recall :p

If you are talking about ideal male "character"... It would simply be anyone who is interesting enough to hold your attention and has a story to tell. He doesn't have to a perfect person for that.

Ideal male on the other hand IMO is someone who is genuine, observant, accepting, tolerant and respectful. 😊

@ red- 3 idiot's Aamir Khan's chracter- loved learning, though not sure if it was only limited to one sphere. He was shown to be a little 'too good' though making it unrealistic, but similar!

@Bold- That reminds me somewhat of Ranbir Kapoor in 'Tamasha' not exactly the same, but for most of his film, he was portrayed as an over realistic guy. Maybe a bit too over, but I remember his character and the ideas behind it really resonating, the family and societal pressures, I felt, really came to life. If the beginning bit hadnt shown him having fun and what not, I woudl have thought he had no emotions too! The movie was somewhat of a drag and could have been better but I appreciated the concept and characterization!

Love your ideas though! Def wanna see 4!

Loved reading your views, and the way you categorically split them! They are all very interesting and unique in their own way :)

My male leads need the following
  • Do not conform to dangerous stereotypes and tropes like "ladki ke naa mein haa hain"
  • Actually, stops pursuing a girl the second she says she isn't interested
  • Is more of an average Joe rather than some handsome hunk with six packs
  • Is comfortable expressing emotions
  • Is comfortable with strong opinionated women
  • Is comfortable doing domestic work
  • Is comfortable with his sexuality and is not frightened by homosexuality
  • Does not feel the need to express his masculinity through aggression
  • Does not use homosexuality or feminity as a humorous punchline

the sarcastic, blunt, straightforward, full of colors,a daydreamer,a story teller,an actor...the one and only VED from Tamasha. 👏❤️

of course, like every human being he was problematic when it came to certain things but,I'd choose him over the 'dreamy' Sameers/Rajs etc.

people who say he had mental issues probably have no idea what the movie was about.

My ideal male needs to have the following traits:
- be self-aware, someone who is aware of their own short-comings and flaws and is actively trying to improve oneself.

- a sense of humour and the ability to laugh at himself, I prefer the dry, sardonic sense of humour.

- the ability to treat elders with respect and be miscible with kids as well. I love men who are good with kids.😳

- non-conforming attitude wrt to societal and cultural practices, one who can swim against the tide and is not scared of expressing an unpopular opinion

- an aptitude for philosophy

- love his job and is passionate about his field of work, no matter what it is.

- just the right amount of confidence, I don't like false humility nor do I like overconfidence and lack of self-confidence

- sincerity, someone who actually follows through with the things they are committed to do. Someone who is non-flaky and reliable.

- be an egalitarian and if required, will stand for the rights of underprivileged or disadvantaged ppl.

- be a strong humanitarian, someone who is able to look beyond their own advantage and is genuinely kind and compassionate (not for show)

- possess an air of refinement, someone who can express disagreement or dissatisfaction in a calm and gentle manner without being aggressive and is always respectful of others' opinions, no matter how different they are from his own.

- possess a liking/love of books and is willing to discuss them from time to time 😛

- be open-minded and non-judgmental, someone who can be a trusted confidant

- a flair for adventure and road-trips, on foot or car/bus/train.

So ya...my ideal male 'character' more-or-less encompasses all those traits (what I have described is my ideal male 😛), but I would prefer if they are a little more flawed than what I have described.😆

The only flaws I don't like are pretentiousness, sanctimonious attitude and lack of self-awareness.
