did u notice in the Ghoomar Song , there was only one man present , coz Rajput women never dance in front of anyone apart from the king . . he sees it secretly . . .it also shows Bhansali has deeply studied about the Rajput culture ..

There are 3 men in the Ghoomar song. Ratan Singh entered with 2 guards, they stood on either side of Ratan facing the other end and hence did not see the queen dance.

Yes I noticed this. Women's ceremonies were attended by only male family members. I don't think it is research. It's fear of Karni Sena that SLB didn't add his usual mirch masala and sexualize the whole traditional dance sequence with navel and cleavage show.

Otherwise he spoiled the impression of Bengali, Gujarati, Maharashtrian culture with over sexualization of traditional dance forms.

If there was a group like Karni Sena in West Bengal, SLB would not have dared to show Paro dancing with a courtesan openly in a Durga Puja celebration

With the lecherous brother-in-law leering at both women from above 🤢

If dance was done in andarmahal the BIL would not be allowed to enter there

Worse than that is there is a group of male dancers dancing behind the Zamindar ki bahu

Can u imagine a 1930s Bengali zamindar ki bahu dancing in full view and in tandem with random male dancers? 😲 And the stern MIL is smiling with approval

Apart from the other liberties SLB took with the original story, like making Paro's mother dance with OTT gusto at Devdas house, that was so cringeworthy 😆

It is true.

I think from what I have seen and learnt he takes inspiration of his depiction from paintings since it is the only way for us to know what could have been the reality back then.

As for skin show in Bajirao Mastani what I have gathered from my research is that there was in fact that amount of skin show back then.The only thing that couldn't have happened was Kashibai dancing but he made a hindi movie and without songs people wouldn't have been as interested though to criticize people will act as if they would.

In this instance too people are deliberately criticizing Ghoomar but it is a traditional dance form done by new bride or is done in Teej by the females only in the presence of females and a male family member.

I have seen people have problem with skin show in bollywood but in older bollywood movies and tv series there have been lot more skin show. If anyone has watched old mythological or historical movies they would know. For example Amrapali movie starring vyjantimala has a lot more skin show than what I have seen in any of SLB movies.

I am just making this case and posting pictures because I have heard innumerable times how SLB has sexualized the characters in his films. But the same set of people haven't seen criticizing Asoka movie. King dancing around, Second queen Kaurvaki tiny clothes also dancing etc etc. It was more of a bollywood masala movie than historical. I don't see people bringing this up.

SLB is an easy target hence all this outrage and criticism directed towards him because he dares to make something grand and beautiful with as close to historical reality as possible and also the stars he favors and casts are case of envy for they are being cast repeatedly by SLB.

LOL this movie. 😆 I haven't watched Mangal Pandey neither planning to. But I am 200% sure it won't be nearly 10% as embarrassing as this movie and that song was. What was it ? Raat ka nasha abhi aankh se gaya nahi something like that ? 🤣

BW has been amazingly interpreting history as per their convenience/style. I dont have any problem with that since I dont watch movies to 'learn' anything. But criticizing one director and leaving the rest is quite hypocritical. For everyone's pleasure, guess directors should add something like 'My version of XYZ' to the title. All happy 😆

Asoka as a whole itna bash hoti hai, from the interpretation of Asoka to the historical representation.. Ab aur kitna bash karwana hai?😆

I am not learned enough to comment on how the Maratha women draped saree at that era but according to the picture there was nothing wrong in "draping the saree". May be people got offended to see Kashibai dance because she had problem in leg. But as you have rightly pointed out there is hardly any topic made on Ashoka or even on JA. Historical accuracies are demanded only from SLB..Seems like people have higher expectation from SLB which is good because I truly think he is a genius of his own...

Coming to Ghoomar, I really like the fact SLB kept it as traditional as possible. Also Ghoomar was the first dance sequence to be shot. It was actually the first shot sequence of the entire movie. I dont think there was any Karni sena threat at that time? Correct me if I am wrong though. SLB surely has evolved over the time. His color palate has changed. From gaudy outlanding depiction of Bengali culture in Devdas to traditional Ghoomar sequence - clearly he has matured a lot and I would give that to him.

Mangal Pandey was not a bad movie u know..😛and Ashoka I really liked. Movie enjoy karna hain to movie ke tarah hi dekhna chaiye...If my ears and eyes are not getting tortured and managed to come out unhurt (unlike Devdas) then why get soo much worked up?
