Diwali

Diwali or Deepawali as we know is the festival of lights that brings joy and happiness in our lives.
But this year this was not the case with Tara. From the morning she was preparing chakli which was her favorite snack of Diwali but unlike every year her heart was not filled with joy. This year was her first Diwali at her in-laws' house. Again and again she was getting lost in the memories of her previous home.

In her school days, she had waited eagerly for Diwali vacation when she would get to eat chakli, gujjiya, poha, sev, and many other Diwali snacks and visit her cousins. She was always near the kitchen when her mother used to prepare the snacks and would try to sneak out some freshly prepared snacks. In some rare events she had succeeded in sneaking them out of the kitchen without her mother's knowledge or one can say her mother had ignored it.

Drawing rangoli was a thing which she had wistfully watched every time when her mother and sister had drawn it in front of the front door. Each day they would draw a design bigger than the previous day. She had guarded each rangoli every day like a sentinel. She had fought with every child who had tried to spoil or change even a dot of the rangoli. And if she had come to know of anyone changing it even a little bit then she had given that kid a sound thrashing.

She used to help her father put the star shaped Diwali lantern in the balcony. It was the maximum light decoration they did. She adored the shops of firecrackers. She had always wanted to purchase all the firecrackers available in the shops of the city. But her father could not afford more than five to six firecrackers which she would share with her sister and cousin happily. Her most loved firecracker was the toy gun which she used to clean days before Diwali. Her father had bought a neon coloured gun when she was five. She and her sister had played at many Diwalis with the same old rusted gun acting as police and goon. This was the only firecracker which she was allowed to at any time of the day on the five day festival of Diwali and was allowed to carry to her cousin's house. Other crackers like anar (flower pot/fountains), chakri (ground spinner), sparklers and small bombs (sounding crackers) were kept away from her saying she would burn herself and she was only allowed to watch it from a few feet away when anyone lit them. She had envied her sister who was four years older than her because she was allowed to light them but Tara was not. She regretted being the youngest child in her family only during Diwali when crackers were burned. All the other times she had used her being the youngest child excuse very well to get more than what her sister was getting.

Diwali was also the occasion when her family used to buy new clothes for her and her sister. Her mother and father used to be content with what old clothes they had saying, "We had just worn these clothes once." Even though they had worn those clothes many a time.

On the eve of Diwali, she with her sister complied with her mother's directions of placing diyas in the room. She also kept an eye on each diya for oil. As soon as she would see the oil level fall even the slightest, she would rush to her mother to inform her about the same.
In her colony, the boys used to prepare a fort with mud as a tribute to Shivaji. They used to put dummies to mimic the court of Shivaji. It used to take weeks for the boys to prepare this fort. But once it was ready, it used to be a marvellous piece of art. The boys used to tell stories about Shivaji. It was also one of the reasons why she loved Diwali.

The part she hated about Diwali was that it just came once in a year and only for five days. She had wished for Diwali to at least come two or three times a year so that she could eat her favorite snacks and also visit her cousins and play with them. The worst part was after Diwali when school used to reopen and within one week she had to give her semester exams. Throughout the vacation she was made to study for the exams instead of playing with other kids of her age throughout the day. Only evening time was her respite, all the other times she either used to study for the exam or do assignments.

*****

This cycle of Diwali celebration had continued for many years with slight modification like she being allowed to make rangoli with her sister, light crackers of her choice, help her mother prepare snacks, and put up the light decoration - Diwali lantern, LEDs and others. When she was fifteen, she stopped purchasing firecrackers even though they were in a better position to purchase more of them and her parents would not have stopped her from bursting all her favourite crackers. But once she had made up her mind, it was very hard or nearly impossible to change it. Even without bursting crackers, her joy of Diwali never faded a bit.

Time has a tendency to change. The Diwali after her sister got married was never the same as the ones she had for the past twenty years. There was everything - snacks, rangoli, lights, and new dresses but the only thing she longed for was her sister. She had helped her mother prepare the snacks and clean the house. This time it was her sole responsibility to make the rangoli which she had wanted to do since she was a little girl but today she wished for her sister to be there with her to make the rangoli. She had lit the diyas which illuminated the whole house but the darkness deep within her heart didn't fade a bit. It remained there reminding her of the absence of her sister. But when she saw her sister happy in her new life, she made peace with her absence. She recalled all the happy moments she had spent with her when they were little kids, their fight for which rangoli to be drawn on the day of Diwali and also their accusations on who ate the last sweet when their mother asked them.

With passing years she had treasured the memory of Diwali in her heart. Last year during Diwali celebrations, a family friend had suggested to her family about Mrityunjay, her husband. Her family liked the proposal and contacted his family immediately. Soon both the families met and liked each other. Tara and Mrityunjay also liked each other and with their acceptance the wedding dates were fixed. It seems like it had happened yesterday but it has been four months since she got married. Each day after her wedding was like a sweet dream. He had been the man she had always dreamt about. He had loved her with his whole heart and she too had loved him back equally. But just before Diwali he had to go to another city because of a business meeting with foreign clients and would not return for Diwali.

This Diwali she was with strangers. Her family was not around her, even Mrityunjay was not there with her. His family had loved her like a daughter but she still missed her parents. At her new home, Mrityunjay's elder brother Rajveer had done the light decoration. Tara and her mother-in-law had cleaned the house and prepared the snacks. She had insisted on making the rangoli after she finished preparing the snacks as sitting in her room idle was just bringing back more and more memories of her childhood with more intensity.

Her longing for Mrityunjay grew more each time she saw Mrityunjay's elder brother and his wife, Naina together. Naina was heavily pregnant and was advised bed rest. Rajveer was taking good care of her, doing her every bidding and kissing her at every chance he got alone with Naina. Naina had shared her first Diwali memories as daughter-in-law with Tara. How Rajveer had gifted her a ring and she was given the opportunity to perform the Laxmi Puja with Rajveer. Tara wished that if Mrityunjay would have been here they would have performed their first Diwali Puja together but thanks to the meeting he was not. She didn't want anything more than Mrityunjay to be here with her.

---------------

Last year when Mrityunjay had visited her she had given him the Diwali snacks which he had loved and had asked her to prepare them next year when she would be at their house. Last time he called, he had even talked about missing the opportunity to eat any of the snacks made by her.

She was controlling her emotions and trying not to lose control and cry. She was outside the front door drawing rangoli with full concentration when two hands covered her eyes.

At first she got scared but once she touched the hand she knew who it was and all the emotions that she was controlling since morning burst and a low sob escaped from her mouth and tears from her eyes started flowing uncontrollably. Mrityunjay immediately drew his hands back from her eyes and turned her to face him. He got confused seeing her cry. He pulled her in his arms and hugged her tightly. She gripped the front of his shirt and rested her head on his chest and drenched them with tears. She was happy as her wish was granted and Mrityunjay was here with her but Mrityunjay was getting worried seeing her crying.

After a minute when her sobs stopped, he held her face in his palms and asked, "What happened? Why are you crying? Is there something wrong?"

Tara smiled and said, "Nothing, everything is fine. I am happy that you are here and this." She gestured towards her eyes, "Is nothing. These are just silly emotions."

He hugged her once again and murmured in her hair, "I missed you so much."
She nodded burying herself more in him. They heard someone coughing and turned to see Naina standing there. Tara's cheeks were red with embarrassment. Mrityunjay was grinning still holding Tara.

"I think you both can continue your talk in your room," she said turning away from them.

At that time Tara realized she was still in Mrityunjay's embrace and pulled herself away from it. Naina giggled and went inside. Mrityunjay got up and tried pulling Tara with him but she refused.

"I have to finish this rangoli before evening," she argued. Seeing no point in arguing with her, he went straight to his room.

Tara with her heart now full of love and joy finished the rangoli within one hour and went to her room. As soon as she entered her room, Mrityunjay hugged her from behind, circling his arms around her waist and burying his nose in the crook of her neck sending tingling sensations throughout her body. She felt her legs going weak. She gripped his hand tightly for support to stand. He planted a kiss behind her ear. He slightly bit her earlobe busting firecrackers throughout her body. He traced his lips from her neck till her shoulders. She turned around to face him and saw the love in his eyes mixed with desire to have her and make love for all the lost time. His eyes shifted to her lips and then to her eyes.

Tara understood what he was going to do, so she took the initiative and stood on her toes and pulled his head towards her and kissed him on his lips. It was a slow kiss with theirs tongue dancing in rhythm but soon it grew fast and wild. Mrityunjay's one hand was holding Tara's head firmly while the other hand was playing with her exposed belly. A low moan escaped from her. Mrityunjay was just in his trousers. Tara was tracing her fingers on his well toned chest when a knock on the door brought their attention back to the present.

"Tara, Mrityunjay get ready soon. You are going to do the Laxmi Puja today," said Mrityunjay's mother Nirmala from the other side of the closed door.

They both looked at each other in shock.

"Yes mom we will be there in thirty minutes," said Mrityunjay grinning at Tara's red face.

When his mom left, Mrityunjay once again held Tara in his arms and gave her a long kiss and said, "We will continue this once the puja is done." Tara gasped when he walked back to the washroom winking at her.

As promised, they were ready in thirty minutes for the puja. Tara was wearing a green lehenga with yellow dupatta and Mrityunjay was wearing a yellow sherwani.

The whole family sat together and performed the puja. After the puja, Tara was keeping diyas on the terrace when Mrityunjay came from behind and held her in his arms.

"Mrityunjay leave me now, someone will come here and see us, she said in a low voice resting on his chest.

"You are just saying this but even you don't want me to go, he said turning her to face him. She giggled.

"But if you stay here you have to help me, she said tracing her fingers on his clothed chest.

"At your service madam, he said making a mock bow. She giggled again.

She handed him a plate of unlit diyas and instructed him where they needed to be placed. But Mrityunjay was not in a mood to follow her instructions. Each time he was placing it where she had not told him to. After five minutes of misplacing diyas, Tara was irritated with Mrityunjay and took the plate from him. She was placing a diya when Mrityunjay's hand came from behind and covered her hand. She smiled and lit the diya. Mrityunjay's hand was still covering her hand when she was lighting the diyas and keeping them. Together they lit all the diyas on the terrace. When they were done lighting diyas on the terrace, they stood there admiring their work in each other's embrace. Tara was resting her head on Mrityunjay's chest and his chin rested on her head.

Their trance broke when they heard Naina calling them from downstairs. He gave her a quick kiss on her lips and they descended the stairs. At the last stair Naina was waiting for them. She instructed Tara to go to their mother-in-law.

When she was gone, Naina dragged Mrityunjay to one corner and asked, "Did you bring something for Tara?" Mrityunjay shook his head in no.

"It's her first Diwali here and you forgot to bring her gift!" she hissed lowly.

"Even your brother who is considered dumb in this case had brought a gift for me, she said glaring at him. He looked at her apologetically. Before he could say anything they were called for dinner.

During dinner he wanted to talk to Tara and apologize to her but she was busy with his mother discussing how Diwali was celebrated at her home. After dinner they went outside to burst crackers. Rajveer and Mrityunjay were bursting small bombs and lighting anar and chakri. Rest of the family members were watching them. Mrityunjay came to Tara and handed her a sparkler.

First she hesitated but then when Mrityunjay held her hand in his there was no denial. More than any firework happening in the surrounding, there was a greater grander firework going on inside Tara each time Mrityunjay touched her, filling her heart with more joy. He murmured in her ears, "I am sorry I didn't bring any gift for you."

Tara turned and looked at him. He was looking away from her. She murmured back to him, "I wanted you to be here today with me and you are here. That's the biggest gift that you have given me."

He looked at her with the same love in his eyes and smiled. "I will make sure this gift satisfies you very well, he whispered in her ear and Tara turned red understanding his suggestion.

Beautiful...grammatically well written...grammer is very good..felt like i walk down in my childhood memory lane...very nostalgic

MJ and tara is romance very good...well described esp the bedroom romance ...though i don't watch the serial so i can't judge...but you should have added more of RN romance...bcs i had watched RN indefinite times...next time please write more of RN romance...anyways like MJ and tara too...

and yes it true that every diwali our parents buys us a new clothes but never for themselves...and they wear old clothes by saying ek baar hi toh pehna hai...(we just wear it once)... its not that they can't afford to buy new clothes for themselves but they are so busy in preparation for Diwali...has no time for them...

Tara is so crazy about Diwali. Her special interest towards Diwali was described well. Now she misses her sis during diwali. Its true that even if our inlaws r good we will miss our parents on certain occasions.Good that u showed that.In RS shows women forget maayka when they get used to their sasural which is disgusting.Tara Mrityunjay had arranged marr?Surprising that Rajveer Naina r also there in this OS.Sad that even Mrityu had to leave b4 diwali.Tara missing her hus more seeing Rajveer Naina together was so realistic.I myself has experienced it😉.so i can relate to it.
