Chapter 3:
Avni's POV
We were back together. Neil was back in my life. In our life as I thought of the baby. We were both in bed and Neil had spent the last 15 minutes talking to my stomach. I was starting to feel a little jealous as I listened to him crooned nonsensical things to my stomach.
I placed my hand on his head and he looked up at me and smiled. That stupid grin made my stomach flutter and I smiled back at him before he turned his attention away from me and went back to talking to the bump.
"Geez, Neil. Enough."
" What? he asked as he looked up at me again and raised a knowing eyebrow, " Are you jealous, Mrs Khanna?"
" No. Just let the kid sleep. "
" She needs to know me. I need to make up for the last 5 months."
" First of all, we don't know that it's a she', and second of all, the first 3 months, he or she didn't even have ears to listen to you so technically, its only 2 months and lastly, you have 4 more months to bore my baby, leave him alone."
" First of all, I know it's a she,' second of all, I'm not boring her; I'm getting to know her and lastly, you never know- the first few months are the formative months, that's where she would have developed a bond with me and since I missed out on those months, I need to make up for it and lastly, it's not just your baby, it's our baby."
" Stop putting so much pressure on him. I'm going to sleep now."
"Sleep? No way! I haven't been with you for 5 months. You can't sleep just yet, either."
" I'm tired."
He crawled up the bed and balanced himself on his arms above me, " Sleep is for the weak," he said with a devilish grin.
"I'm weak," I said, innocently.
"You're not weak, he said and leaned down to kiss me. " I missed you," he said softly against my lips.
" Me too," I admitted and looped my hands around his neck. Pulling gently, I waited as he lowered his body gently next to mine.
He placed his head in the crook of my neck and kissed my neck softly before sucking on the spot that made me gasp. Placing his head on my shoulder, he placed a hand around my middle and hugged me close.
We stayed like this for a while before falling asleep.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The nausea woke me up. I pushed Neil's head off of me, and got up from the bed as fast as I could.
"Avni, questioned Neil as he sat up on the bed and rubbed the sleep out of his eyes. "Kya hua?"
The only answer I could provide was the slamming of the bathroom door. I leaned over the toilet bowl and emptied my already empty stomach.
"Avni," called Neil as he pushed open the door. I waved him off. I didn't want him to see me like this.
I dry heaved over the toilet bowl before leaning my head forward and resting it on the cold marble.
"Ew, don't do that." He lifted my hair from my face and wiped my face with a cold towel.
"Thank you," I said softly.
"What happened?"
"Morning sickness."
"Aw, poor baby," he said before pulling me into a hug. " You feeling any better now?"
"In a bit. I need some tea first."
" I can make you some, he said. I shook my head. "You get ready for work. Ma must be up, she'll make it.
"Okay, he said before helping me up.

Ali's POV
After Neela Aunty let me into the house, I headed straight for the kitchen. I came back after 3 days of being away at a conference. I thought I'd surprise Avni with her favourite poha for breakfast.
The poha was almost ready when I heard footsteps behind me.
"Ali, she cried as she entered the kitchen, "you're back."
I turned around and found Avni waddling into the kitchen slowly. "Hey Fatty," I teased.
" Ali! Just wait till I get my hands on you," she said as she moved closer still.
"Muhje moti haha?" she said as she swatted my shoulder.
" Ab moti ho, to..." I teased.
" Ali! That's terribly rude! I'm pregnant!" she said with a frown. "Now, what did you make me?"
"Poha!
The smile that was on her face disappeared and she wriggled her nose in disgust. " No. I can't eat it. It makes me throw up."
"What? How is that even possible. Your kid hates poha?
"You're forgetting who the dad is," she grumbled as she looked at the poha and scrunched her nose again.
I couldn't forget who the dad is, no matter hard I tried. I had made my peace with Avni and Neil's marriage. I knew that Avni was giving the marriage a go, and if that's what she wanted, then I would be supportive of that. Her happiness mattered a lot to me. She had been through so much since I knew her. She deserved happiness.
Ever since, she and Neil broke up, I've been wondering if this would finally mean that I can ask her out.
I wondered when Neil came to Chamko Cafe, and I demonstrated my best right hook and told him that as the owner of the place, I had the right to refuse serving anyone.
I wondered when she threw up on my shoes one afternoon.
I wondered when she put her head on my shoulder and fell asleep as we watched The Lord of the Rings.
I wondered everytime I saw her, really!
I tried to find the right time to ask her. But, there was no right time. I knew she was expecting someone else's child and I knew some people might think I'm being a jerk, but all I thought about when I thought of asking her was that it meant was that I was being supportive. It was hard being a single parent. She knew it and I knew it.
We both saw Ayesha Ma struggle. We both grew up watching her life be so tough.
"Even if you're not her boyfriend, you're her best friend. You can still support her," I reasoned to myself. Everything else could wait. She and the baby were the most important.
I picked up the poha and followed her into the dining room after she made herself some toast.
"Where's Ma?" she asked.
"Here somewhere."
"Kya hua? Why aren't you eating?" I asked. "Thought we'd wait for everyone to come," she replied without meeting my eyes. "You know Neela Aunty won't mind if you start. We all know how ravenous you are when you wake up in the morning."
"DD," I heard and I was filled with dread. That voice belonged to Neil.
I turned around and there he was coming out of Avni's bedroom, his phone lodged against between his head and his shoulder, while his hands were busy buttoning his vest. "Where are the constables? I thought I had made it clear that they needed to be here by 7am."
Avni was looking at him and shaking her head. He rolled his eyes at her before returning to his phone call.
I looked at her, " What the f**k? I mouthed at her.
"Morning, he said as he hung up the phone and greeted me. I grunted in his general direction. What the hell was he doing here? And why was he coming out of Avni's room?
"How're you feeling? he asked her as he touched her shoulder and squeezed.
"Better," she replied.
"Bullshit," I said.
They both looked at me. "Shut up, Ali," she said in frustration.
He cocked his head inquisitively at me.
" She won't feel any better until she eats her crappy dry toast."
"Can't you be a little nice? he said as he picked up a piece of toast, buttered it and handed it to her.
I ignored him and looked at her.
"Avni, are you hurt? I asked, pointing to her neck. A small purple bruise.
She reddened.
"Kya hua?" asked Neela Aunty as she came into the room.
"Nothing," she replied quickly and leaned her head forward, letting her hair fall forward, effectively covering the bruise.
Except, it wasn't a bruise, I realized belatedly. It was a hickey.
Were they back together?
"Avni, you're not eating Ali's famous poha?" asked Neil as he diverted everyone's attention.
" Your baby hates it."
Neil raised an eyebrow at her and laughed. " And what does she like?"
She rolled her eyes at him. "Bindi and bhaigan for now."
Neil laughed, " Atta girl," he said in between catching his breath. Avni threw a piece of toast at his head. Which he ducked.
"Girl?" asked Neela Aunty.
"Neela Ma, I think it's going to be a girl."
"Kuch bhi," said Avni.
" It could be," replied Neela Ma.
" It can also be a boy," I replied. Avni looked at me and beamed. She wanted a son.
"Jo bhi ho, bas Avni ka gusa usko nahi milna chahiye/"
"Shut up, Neil," she replied and he winked at her. And all she did was roll her eyes at him.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We were still at the dining table when the door bell rang.
"I'll get it, said Neela Aunty before getting up to get the door. She retuned back with DD and 4 constables in tow.
"Good morning everyone, said DD.
"DD, aap logon ne nashta kiya? asked Avni.
"Apne banaya, bhabhi?
"No, Ali made it.
I saw the relief in DD's eyes and smiled. "No, I ate, he replied nonetheless.
Neil stood up and directed the police officers into the sitting area, where he briefed them about their duties. When they dispersed, I followed him into the sitting area, leaving Avni and Neela Aunty in the dining room.
"Neil. What the hell is this?
" What?
" What are you doing here? I was gone for 3 days and when I come back, you're here? In Avni's life again. My baby this and my baby that? What the hell is going on?
" Whatever is going on is between Avni and I. I don't have to tell you anything.
" Yes, you do. If you're only using her for your investigation work, then yes, you do have to answer to me.
" Ali, I know you love her but she's my wife. Whatever happens in our relationship is between her and I.
" I do love her, but I also know that she's in love with you. Which is why I do not want to see her hurting again. You were not here the last 5 months, I was. I saw how broken she was! You think she's this weak because of the pregnancy? No, she hadn't been eating properly. She barely slept. I won't let you break her again.
" Ali, you and I were friends. Do you really think I can do this?
" I've seen it happen, Neil. Forgive me if I find it hard to believe you.
"Then, I don't know what to tell you. Excuse me, I'm going to say goodbye to my wife, he said before he disappeared into the house.
Damn it. I needed to talk to Avni.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Avni's POV:
I was getting ready when Neil stormed into the room. I frowned. " Kuch hua hai kya?
"Ali, he replied moodily.
" What did he say?
"He was giving me a lecture about you, he huffed. I smiled. " Are you jealous of Ali? I asked as I moved closer to him.
"Should I be?
"Ali is my friend. My best friend and he knows me better than myself. Sometimes, he get overprotective but he's harmless.
I stopped infront of him and reached for his hands and pulled him up. " You have nothing to be worried about, I said softly, " I'm your wifey, aren't I?
" Woh to hai, he said with a crooked smile, now, give me a kiss like a good little wife before I head to work.
" Good little wife? Do you know me at all, Neil? I teased.
"Not like Ali, I guess, he huffed before turning his face away.
I grabbed his head and turned it back to me and kissed him softly on the lips. " You know me in a different way, I replied.
He smiled, " Tum kitni jaldi haar man leti ho.
I gasp. " You were kidding?
"Of course. I trust you. But thank you for the kiss, he replied as he wagged his eyebrows at me.
Shit. He got me.
"I have to go now. Bye, wifey, he said before he leaned forward and kissed me again; deeply this time.
My stomach fluttered and I wrapped my arms around his neck. I didn't want him to go.
As he started to pull away, " Don't go, I whimpered against his lips. " I have a meeting with the Commissioner, else I would have stayed.
"You'll come back right?
"I will be back.
"Promise me?
"I promise that I'll come back to you. I can come home for lunch if you want?
I put my head on his shoulder and hugged him as best as I could with my stomach getting in the way. He caressed my hair, " Avni, he said softly, his lips moving against my hair, " I won't leave you. Ever. I'll come back to you two.
" I love you, he said as he moved my head and stared into my eyes. I was worried and I'm sure he could see it. But, I blamed my hormones for making me so vulnerable.
When we walked out of my room, Neil let go of my hand. There were to be no hand holding or whispers of sweet nothings infront of anyone, except maybe Neela Ma.
I sighed. My life has been complicated since I was born. I didn't see why today would be any different. Neil met my eyes and it was like he knew what I was thinking. He nodded in encouragement and walked out of the house.
I watched his retreating back and felt the pang of his absence already.
"Avni, called Ali. I sighed I was expecting this conversation ever since Neil mentioned it. I turned around, " Haan Ali?
" What the hell is happening? I've been gone for 3 days and I come back and Neil is back in your life. You're so close?
" Ali,I can't explain this.
"Did you forget about Juhi? His ex- girlfriend? The one he told you he loved more than life?
" Ali, I know all of this. I know she exists. I know his mom still hates me. But, I can't forget all the important stuff.
"Important stuff? Kya?
"He's my husband. He's my baby's father. He wants to be involved in his life and I can't take that away from them. Ali, I know how it feels to not have a father and I do not wish them for my child.
"So he's only here for the baby?
I nodded. I hated lying to Ali, but I had to. We needed to get to the roots of this Jagoora mystery.
"Avni! he cried out in frustration. "Kya karehi ho yaar? If he's only here for his baby, then what the hell is this? he said as he pointed to the bruise on my neck.
" I love him, Ali.
" I know you do, and that's how I know you're going to get your heart broken. Avni, he chose Juhi. Did you forget this?
I felt the tears stinging my eyes and Ali sighed. " Sorry, he said, " Come here, as he pulled me into a hug, " I don't want to see your hurting again.
" I know Ali, but you have to trust me. "Can you do that? Can you trust that I know what I'm doing?
" I hope so, he said. " Okay, I'm going to get going. Nanno is alone at the cafe.
" Theek hai. Bye.
