He saw her run about the room. She was in a hurry to get dressed for the puja that Nani had kept for their marriage and their 'happy togetherness'. The thought itself made him scoff. He didn't know how long he would have to put up with Chandni's pretense. The latest being, playing the part of a happy bride who had married her childhood friend. The sincerity with which she played her part had the intensity to partly convince a cynic like him too, only that he knew her reality. And yet, there were moments he felt vulnerable to her show of love. A part of him secretly wanted to succumb to that affection that he yearned for all these years. Each time she smiled her brilliant smile at him or affectionately repeated one of her classic lines from childhood, he felt his heart sink. O treacherous heart! It still was affected by her. After all this time. After all that she was responsible for. It still wasn't as strongly willed as his logic and mind. But he will be damned if he listened to its whimsies. He would learn to steel it, no matter what a herculean task it might seem in her presence. There were promises he had made on their day of marriage and those were the promises he was determined to keep.
He stood to take a suit for himself when he noticed a piece of glass on the carpet. It was from the glass that he had shattered a while ago. Shilpa had probably not noticed this piece while cleaning the room. The next few seconds went in a flurry, as he saw Chandni rush past him with the glass piece being directly in her path. Acting on his reflexes, he pulled her by her hand towards him, before she could step on it.
She was taken aback momentarily before she registered the reason for his action by following his line of vision. When he looked back at her, her expression reflected gratitude, while her eyes shone with love. "You say that you hate me with every fibre of your being. You want to cause me pain, want to break me; and yet you protect me each time. How can I not believe that my Dev is still in there somewhere when your actions speak otherwise?" she reasoned with him.
His eyes held sarcasm as he laughed humourlessly, "You really believe I care for you, don't you? That I rush to your aid like some prince of your dreams." His countenance became serious, "Stop fooling yourself Chandni. Slip out of your delusions and face the reality. The man in front of you is Advay and you mean very little to him."
He left her arms and observed her smile slip but he held on to his resolve nonetheless. "Now, about the claim of caring for you that you repeatedly make, know one thing Chandni. I would not let anything or anyone else hurt you. Not even this piece of glass. That right is exclusively reserved for me and I will follow this promise to the hilt.
You say that we are meant to be together forever. Right you are! During the first act of our lives, you fooled naive Dev and he willingly followed you, believing in the happy moments you charmingly presented. While he basked in that happy bubble, you betrayed him and supported the very people who schemed against his family. Now, it is only fair that I return your favour. In this second act of our lives, we shall share my sorrow and pain. I will present to you what it means to feel betrayed and lonely. I will be the nemesis to your being like you were to mine. The moments of make-belief heaven are long gone sweetheart. Now you will burn with me in my personal hell." He ended in an eerily calm way.
She heard his deadly monologue, while her heart cried to see her lover in this state. His mistrust in her pained her and yet, she held her ground. For she was way stronger than he thought she'd be. He was completely wrong about her and she will make him see reason. He claimed that she had brought about this change in him and she took it as a challenge to bring him right back to who he was. And while the lover in her secretly yearned for justice, the friend in her could not leave him to wallow in his pain. His redemption would have to wait. It was time to get her friend back. She met his eyes calmly as she responded, "Sorrow or pain, darkness or light, I accept it all if it means sharing it with you. The one thing however that is unacceptable to me is leaving you. There will come a time Advay, when you will realise the truth. For that time I shall wait as your friend."
He heard her brief response and saw her leave the room. The impact of her words, behaviour and mere presence in the past few days were teasing his resolve. As he suffered with his conflicting thoughts, beliefs and emotions, he laughed sardonically accepting the bitter truth. She was more of a nemesis to him than he could ever be.
