As soon as Ayaan was fast asleep,Mahek reached for the nightstand and opened the drawer. Her old diary lay there. She drew it out and turned the pages. Her hand stopped on the page the day she left wild rose camp grounds.
Five years back ...
Cab stopped at Mahek's mama mami's house. "Go inside and try to act normal,I'll pay you a visit tomorrow." Sonal said as she stood there holding the cab door open. Blinking her tears away Mahek got out and handed her some cash. "Keep it,I'll pay for the cab don't worry,cover your hickey and go inside,your mami is glaring at us from the terrace. Fixing her dupatta around her neck,she grabbed her suitcase and went inside. She had not said a word since she left the camp grounds. "There you are! Finally my baccha is home!" Her mama cried in excitement. "Mama ji..." Tears filled her eyes when she touched his feet. "Jinda rah puttar!" He blessed her. "How was your trip bacchey?" "It was good." She swallowed the cries escaping her lips. "Mahek!" Beta aagayee tu?" Mami howled from the doorway. "Ji mami..." Mahek wanted to hug her and cry but she moved away. "Now that you are back I'm free from the kitchen." Mami sighed in relief. Mama glared angrily at her. "Uff ho Nandini! She just came home,please let her breathe!" Mami grimaced. "Tell your niece to stay at home and learn some housework ...her marriage is going to be fixed next week." Maheks eyes widened. "Mama ji,I don't want to get married...I want to study more." Mama caressed her head and opened his mouth to say something when mami intervened. "Studying is just an excuse,you found someone in the jungle right?" Tears rolled down Maheks cheeks and she ran upstairs to her room. Locking the door she fell on the bed and cried her heart out. "I will not marry anyone ...I just can't ...I still love you Shaurya .." she sobbed on her pillow and soon she dozed off.
In the middle of the night she woke up. She wished she had a cell phone so she could talk to Sonal and share her pain. She needed her friend. Her wicked mami never allowed her to keep a phone. Freshening up,she dressed and came downstairs. She cooked and cleaned the house for the rest of the night to keep her mind from wandering back to shaurya . At around 6am ,she was ready for work. When mami mama came out of their room,everything was done,from cooking to cleaning and washing. Before they could say anything,Mahek said she was going to the cafe,mama ji can take his time and come. Saying that she left. "Something's not right with her I just know." Said mami. Mama scolded her and left for the cafe without eating. "Arey eat and go!" Screamed mami. "You enjoy and feed the neighbours too!" Mama ji shouted back. That day Sonal came to meet Mahek at the cafe. She handed her a parcel. "What is this?" Asked Mahek. "Shaurya had given this for you when we were at the camp,he asked me to give it to you when you returned home." Her face lit up at the mention of Shaurya's name. "Meri Jaan open it I wanna see too!" Insisted Sonal. Mahek opened the parcel to find a cell phone inside! He had gifted her a phone without his phone number. Her countenance fell. "Cheer up Mahek! At least you can talk to me on the phone!" Mahek kept the phone hidden from mami and talked to Sonal whenever she needed to. She was missing Shaurya badly but she always felt his presence with her.
A month went by. Whenever mami brought a boy home for marriage proposal,mama ji would sent Mahek away for some work. This way,boys never got to meet Mahek. And later,mama ji would get scolding from evil mami. That month Mahek's period didn't come. Another month went by still no cycle. She was feeling changes in her body,she had lost her appetite and would eat very less. That night she called Sonal. "Sonal I missed my period yaar...and I'm really scared." "What are you saying Mahek? Oh god no! Accha sunn! Don't panic I'll take you to my family doctor tomorrow ...for now just go to bed and sleep,I'll come early in the morning." Mahek wiped her tears and laid down. "Can I be pregnant? what will happen if I am? How will I face mami? She will kill me if she comes to know." Thought Mahek.
Next day was Sunday,mama and mami were both at home. Mahek was in the kitchen when she felt dizzy. Her head spun and she fell. "Mahek beta!" Mama ran to her and helped her sit up. Mami sprinkled water on her and she half woke up. "Call the doctor Nandini!" Mama told her. Mami threw suspicious glares at Mahek and dialled the docs number. At the same time Sonal stepped in the house. She heard mami talking to the doc on the phone. "Oh God!" She rushed towards her friend. Both mama and Sonal helped her to her room. Lady doctor arrived in few minutes. Mama came out as the doc examined her. "Mahek is pregnant! Bring her to my clinic tomorrow i'll check her one more time." Tears rolled down Maheks cheeks as she touched her belly. "You bitch! How could you?" Mami's slap landed on Maheks cheeks. "Mami ji please! You can't hit her like this!" Sonal grabbed her hand. "You stay out of this samjhi?" Mami pushed Sonal away and grabbed Maheks hair. "This is why you went to the camp? Huh? Who is he? Naam bata mujhey!(tell me the name)! Mahek cried and tried to break free. "Mami...you are hurting me..." "Nandini!!!!" Mama's voice echoed in the room. "I'm warning you leave her!" Mami left her hair and glared angrily at mama. "This is all because of you! You have given her all the freedom in the world! Now suffer both of you!" She strode to the door and turned. "And remember,I don't want that bas***d to be born in my house!" Mahek hugged her mama and cried. She told him everything about Shaurya. "I love still love him mama,he left a part of him in my womb..I will take care of this baby in my womb and bring him or her in this world no matter what." She wept. Mama comforted her. "I'm with you bacchey!" "Thank you mama..." Just then the door flung open and mami strode in with two thugs. "Take her!" Mami ordered the goons. The guys dragged Mahek out of bed. "What's going on? Choro usey! (Leave her). Cried mama. "We are taking your lovely niece to get her baby aborted!" Saying that mami walked out of there. "No please leave me! Mama ji help me! Sonal please stop them!" Mahek cried and struggled but the guys held her captive. "I'm gonna call the cops!" Said Sonal. "No Sonal,I have a plan." Mama told her what his plan was.
Meanwhile,Mahek lay unconscious on a hospital bed. Mami paid the goons and they left. She was pacing the hallway in wait of the gynaecologist. Mama walked in the hallway holding his chest. "Nandini...call the doctor...haay Mera chest.." Mami saw him and ran towards him. "Kya huwa aap ko..." before mami could go on further,mama ji fell on the floor. Mami screamed for help. All the people and doctors crowded them as mama continued the drama of heart attack. Just then Sonal entered the ward and looked for Mahek. She found her finally. "Mahek uth! Mahek!" Sonal tapped on her cheeks. Mahek opened her eyes feebly. "My baby...my baby is ok na?" Sonal helped her up and hugged her tight. "Your baby is perfectly fine,lets go from here we don't have much time." Sonal helped her friend to escape the witch that day. She called a cab and kept Mahek hidden from all by-passers. "I have packed a bag for you,your diary and Shaurya's shirt are also in the bag." Mahek hugged her friend. "How will I repay you Sonal?" Sonal broke the hug. "You don't have to pay meri Jaan! I will make your lover boy pay and that to with interest." Mahek smiled in so many days. "And take this,your mama ji sent it for you." Mahek opened the little bag to find some cash and some jewelries which mama ji had bought for her wedding. She broke down. "Please Mahek stop crying...it's not good for the baby." Just then sonal's phone rang. It was mama ji asking for Mahek's well being. Sonal handed the phone to her. "Mahek beta...tu theek hai na? (You ok na). "I'm ok mama ji ..thank you for everything mama ji." "Go with Sonal and start a new life..my blessings are with you..take care of the baby and yourself...I'm putting the phone down before I'm caught by your cunning mami." "Apna khayal rakhna mama(take care of yourself) I'll come back soon." Mama hung up,drying her tears Mahek got in the cab with Sonal and the driver drove away towards Mumbai town. Sonal had found a job in a wealthy company,they have also given her a flat to live in and work. "You will stay with me and finish your cooking course alright? I don't need anything from you...just stay with me and take care of yourself and the baby growing in your womb." Sonal told her as soon as they entered the flat. "Thank you my friend...but I really need to see Shaurya." Sonal frowned. "For what?" "He needs to know about this baby." Sonal sat beside her. "What if he rejects both of you?" Mahek blinked her tears away. "I won't mind but he has to know about his baby." Sonal got up to make a herbal tea for both. "Ok then! I'll find out his info tomorrow at work,and then I'll take you to meet him after I come back from work,how's that?" Mahek nodded.
Next day Sonal left for work while Mahek was still sleeping. She had hired a maid named Meena to do the cooking and housework. Mahek had slept in whole day,Sonal had to call and wake her up. Meena made lunch while Mahek freshened up and got ready to meet Shaurya. Sonal came home with Shaurya's home address and his phone number. Maheks face lit up with joy. She quickly dialled his number. Her chest pounded in its rib cage as the phone rang. Someone picked up the phone. "Shaurya!" Not Shaurya but a girl replied from the other side. "This is Shaurya's fianc .." Maheks heart sank and the phone fell from her hand. Sonal picked it up and held the phone her ears. "This is Sonal,can I talk to shaurya please..it's urgent!" "Oh he's busy..you can leave a message i will pass it to him." The girl said. "Yeah...go to hell!" Fuming in anger Sonal tossed the phone away and looked at Mahek. With tears in her eyes she was caressing her belly. Sonal's heart wrenched seeing her like that. "Shaurya khanna! I will break your legs today!" She said in her heart. "Mahek get up and let's go! You can't sit here and cry for the rest of your life! We need to find out what's going on and look for a solution." Both friends got in a cab and left towards khanna mansion. They were stopped at the security gate. "We would like to see Shaurya khanna please." Said Mahek. "One minute ma'am." The security called inside and hung up. "Someone will be here shortly." Security told them. Mahek just wiped her sweat and paced the pathway in anticipation. "Who is it security?" Both girls were startled by a female's voice. "Ma'am,they came to see Shaurya." The tall skinny girl walked towards the girls. "What is it that you want?" "We would like to see Shaurya its very important." Sonal requested. "So you are the one that called before right? I told you Shaurya is busy with his engagement preparation,leave a message with me." Mahek couldn't believe her ears. "And who are you?" Asked Sonal. "I'm his wife to be!" Sonal felt like punching her face. "Sonal let's go...we are wasting our time and I don't feel ok." Mahek said while rubbing her tummy. "Just a minute Mahek!" She grabbed a wood lying near by. "I'll break his legs and come!" Sonal pushed the gates open and rushed inside. The girl and the security ran after her. Before she could step inside the house,security caught her and threw her out of the gate. Sonal was huffing in anger. "That was stupid move Sonal." Mahek told her. "I know! If we don't get a reply from him tonight,I won't let him see you ever again!" Saying that she text messaged Shaurya. Mahek did the same. Unfortunately Shaurya's phone was with the fiancee girl. She read the text and deleted it. Text messages kept coming and she kept on deleting them. Mahek tossed and turned in bed that night waiting for his call or message but it never came. "That's it Mahek! If he loved you or cared about this baby,he would have responded but he never did! It's time to move on and focus on this baby and your carrier." Sonal told her. "I guess you are right! I have to raise this baby alone." She said sadly.
