Baldev - A character explained

Today I noticed a lot of topics in the forum about how people are disappointed with Baldev, but for some reason I'm not. Maybe I'm reading too much into his character or maybe my hopes are still pinned on his dialogue: Ek baap ko pata bhi nahi tha ke uski ek beti bhi hai. But I just thought of sharing what I've understood of Baldev's character so far.

Baldev and Satrupa got married, it seems, due to parental pressure. My guess is (based on what's aired so far) that Baldev was a typical rich playboy who refused to settle down and had one too many affairs. One of these was Sudha, who he may have been serious about at some point enough to have a kid with her. After Narottam's birth and entry into Lal Mahal, Dadaji and Dadiji decided that it was time to get Baldev married before anything else happened. They chose Satrupa and hid the truth from her about Baldev's affairs. Satrupa tried to make the marriage work and obviously Baldev tried to some extent too for Satrupa to get pregnant twice.

Now during this period, at some point, Satrupa learned the truth about Narottam and Baldev's affairs and felt betrayed. Maybe she decided at that time or maybe she got married into the family for this reason only, but basically she decided that the royal steels had to be hers or her children's. Hence why she seems to care only about power, status, money, etc. Also during this time, Baldev realized that this marriage was never going to work because he had been disowned from the family due to Narottam and Satrupa had started to gain more attention than him.

Now think about this as a kid. If you are a kid and you aren't getting enough attention (or you perceive that you aren't getting enough attention), you're going to throw tantrums. You'll demand things in the stores, cry and wail over nothing, complain if your sibling is getting more attention than you, and basically hate anything that your sibling does or brings for you even if it is with the purest of intentions.

Translate the same to Baldev and Satrupa's relationship. Baldev has been disowned. He's been cast aside. And Satrupa gets more attention and respect from Dadaji and Dadiji than Baldev. She is treated more as their child than Baldev is. In Baldev's eyes that makes Satrupa that sibling who is getting more attention than he is. But he's a grown and mature adult. He's not going to throw babyish tantrums. But he will complain that Satrupa gets more attention and recognition. He will wail over small things that Satrupa or anyone tries to do. He will demand things like Satrupa leaving the house with her "illegitimate" child, even if it doesn't make sense. He will hate Anami because Satrupa brought her in even if Anami really is his child.

Now it is going to take time for Baldev to accept Anami. In psychology, there is a concept referred to as the 5 stages of grief. These can really apply to anything. They are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Baldev is going to go through all of these before he and Anami bond. He has already denied Anami. He is now in the anger stage. He will do everything and anything in this stage. Over time he will slowly start bargaining with Satrupa, like "leave this house and take this amount" or "stop bothering me and do whatever you want" and so on. Depression can often be considered a separate stage, but it often happens at the same time as many other stages. He's in the depressed stage right now. He misses Vatsalya, is denied his basic rights of being Vikram's child, has been used by Satrupa, lost Sudha, and so much more. But as he comes over this he will grow to love Anami and become attached to her.

I also feel that Anami will be accepted slowly by the family. First Dadi will accept her. Then Dada. Then Narottam or maybe Satrupa or maybe both together. Finally it will be Baldev at the end. Pujan and his family obviously will never be able to accept her into the family because it means handing the royal steels over to her.

Personally I'm really liking the way the characters are shaping up and I feel that the CVs are still on the right track and doing a great job with this show. I've been known to lose my attention in any unique daily within 2 to 3 weeks. The fact that I'm still watching and enjoying means the CVs must be doing something right.

Everything I was thinking you have put into words...In fact I quote it all and say ditto!! Yes, he is a grey shaded character but that's the beauty of this show ...the characters aren't perfect, they are the way real ppl are ... Disownment by his father must have been punching in his guts for years ... like a sore wound that refuses to heal...i have not disliked him even for a moment so far , in fact he touches something deep inside , something I can't pinpoint but something enough to just hug him once.

For those who does not understand Baldev just a question for them:

What would have Satrupa done if things were other way round? Would she have accepted that Anami is her daughter?

The only question that came out of today's episode was when Baldev says Us Jahil ko... I am just wondering would he have accepted her if she was some sophisticated young lady with all manners to be a princess?

A man's ego is at its lowest low. His father disowned him, his wife does not respect him, his only son whom he loved or for whom he was alive is no more and all of a sudden from a thin air there is a girl in this world who is supposed to be his daughter😲😲 . The worst thing that his own wife decided to hide that little detail as if it was not a flesh and blood but some toy that was hidden.

Grey, white, yellow, red ... I am not sure what he is I only know that this man is real. As real as possible. This is not a fairy tale its the story of life, the story of complication, the story of relationship which gets twisted and twirls in the whirlpool of power, deceit and selfish motive.

You are right like you my attention span too have some issue. CV's for sure are playing with my mind and that too me is due to the chakrakvyuh that is so intense. 👏

You have not only got under the skin of the character but also echoed my thoughts to a large extent. In the epi yesterday, Baldev shouts and confesses to Satrupa that he is not as strong as she is. And rightly so, he made hay while the sun shone, going ahead and having a child borne out of wedlock. But when the time came to step up for his responsibilities, he swayed until Satrupa, the stronger one in their relationship, came by and became an anchor in his life and his family.

But what did Baldev do, he pushed her away? Why? Because he could not harbour the guilt or let anyone troll over his big fat ego and also because he knew that acceptance was perhaps, a sign of the weak, which he mist definitely is.

it will be interesting to see Anami bridge the gap between him and Satrupa, something that Vatsalya had tried and something that Anami will make sure reaches it culmination in due time.

Yep, with you on the human and flawed and grey characters, one thing I absolutely condone on indian TV.

Agree with your analysis of Baldev ... it completely echoes my own thinking. Slowly the layers are being pulled apart one by one to reveal the truth of Baldev and Satrupa's marriage. Satrupa was deceived at the tender age of 17 when she got married ... Baldev today is an angry, embittered man, but he is only reaping the fruits of the seeds he sowed as a young man. Nothing makes a person so angry as to know he is in the wrong ... and Baldev is in that situation.

Dadaji has said more than once to Satrupa ... 'I never treated you as a daughter-in-law, but as a son' ... not a daughter, but a SON. Satrupa got the place that should have been Baldev's, the place that he lost due to his own misdeeds, and also because his wife was stronger and more prepared to take over that place. And he knows it. Hence his anger, the equivalent of temper tantrums ... as you so rightly pointed out.

He is not ready to accept Anami because he wants to lash out at Satrupa ... but added to that is his very real grief over Vatsalya's death, and an unconscious fear of getting attached to another child, and then losing her too, in case Satrupa is lying ... so better to avoid all attachment by insisting she is lying in the first place. Also a sense of disloyalty to Vatsalya ... how can he give the place of a dearly beloved son to a child he didn't even know he had?

So many emotions, so many conflicting feelings ... a very layered character ... and the actor is doing a great job of bring out all the layers the writers have written in.

I'm really enjoying this show ... its so well written ... all the characters have their own stories and the actors are doing a great job of bringing them out.Just hope the show stays free of trp pressures and they can tell their story the way they want to.

Baldev right now is a grieving father, a man who had lost his position in the house when he got disonwned by his father, a man who pretty much had nothing except for his son and that too he lost coz of cruel fate

He doesn't trust Satrupa coz as per Baldev Satrupa is a woman who is power hungry and he is right to an extent as well

He has lost his son and his father wanted him to adopt someone so that he could make him the heir instead and Baldev couldn't do anything about it

Time and again he is reminded that he is a failure...the only thing that didn't remind him that was his son who is no more

Now in such a situation Satrupa has brough a girl out of thin air whom she claims is his daughter

It is tough for him to accept this truth...it is tough for him accept that his wife could lie to him for 17 years, it is tough for him to accept that he has a daughter whom he was not even aware about, it is tough for him to trust Satrupa , tough to accept that Vatsalya is gone and his place as the heir will be taken by Anami which is rightly hers, tough to create a space in his heart for a another child...it is tough for him to let down his guard and allow someone to get attached to him.

What is easy is denial , denial that this girl is his daughter...what is easy is to blame Satrupa..what is easy is to build walls around himself so that he doesn't get hurt further.

He is grieving and is angry at the cruel fate...He is angry at himself and everyone else.

What he needs is time...Time to comprehend and time to accept that Vatsalya is gone and that Anami is his daughter.

Once he will accept this fact , he will be the most loving and protecting towards Anami and so will Anami be for him

Anami is the one who will mend Satrupa's and his relation...she is the one who will give back the place to her father in Lal Mahal which was his...he is going to bridge the distance between Baldev and his father

Anami is the one who is going to collect the broken pieces of Baldev's heart and mend them.

Both father and daughter will take steps slowly yet steadily towards each other

But we have a long way to go

Because if Baldev brought her back and Satrupa hadn't known about her, then given Baldev's past mistakes, everyone would have assumed Anami was another illegitimate child and Baldev would just get further sidelined. Satrupa would do everything in her power to destroy Anami even if she learnt that Anami was really her daughter. But the bigger thing is that Baldev would never have brought her back. He knows what his family is like and that he has been disowned and cast aside for Satrupa and Avdhoot. He is a secondary member of the family: there but not really acknowledged. His fate has become similar to Narottam's. If in this scenario he was the one who had known about Anami, then he would have done everything in his power to ensure that she never found out about Lal Mahal and that his family never found out about her.

Personally I feel that he's saying everything under the sun in his anger. Think about it. When you're angry at someone, like super pissed, you will yell nonsense and accuse them of stupid things. I've done it multiple times. That's why it's said anger is the worst emotion because you end up hurling abuses and words that you never meant.

I refuse to call him grey. I don't like these terms. Grey, white, black. It's like we're defining a person. We're stereotyping them. Oh this show is full of grey characters. No my dear CVs, actors, fans, viewers, etc. This show is full of real characters. Those who are just like you and me. Those who you can relate to. Those whose situations you can find yourself in and react the same way. That's how I see them.

You are right like you my attention span too have some issue. CV's for sure are playing with my mind and that too me is due to the chakrakvyuh that is so intense. 👏

The Precap and finally its Baldev whose gonna get to Anami next after Dadi

My guess was correct and I am glad the makers are adopting this strategy for warming Anami up with Lal Mahal inmates. Baldev is a going to be a strong contender to defend Satrupa and Anami's cause as and when Adhiraj strikes.
