... When Adiraj asked her that one pivotal question, "why did you send away your daughter and not your son?" Satrupa was about to answer in all seriousness, as though it was a perfectly logical question. Which of course it was, just that nobody had demanded that answer of her previously, just made assumptions, ascribed motives, and moved on. And Satrupa either never bothered to correct that assumption, never got around to, or was never given a hearing.

And then Anami interrupted her yet again, and the explanation never found a voice. Truth, lies, prevarication, suppressed... For the moment.

It got me wondering what she was about to disclose. Would it have been your run of the mill outraged denial that she loved her children equally. Something deeply complex. Or was there a simpler truth out there, something unbelievable in its simplicity?

I favour the simple one.

Children are born with core personalities that by and large remain the same even into adulthood. Satrupa would have known at her babies' first cry, which one of them was the stronger and more able to survive against the odds. So she kept the weaker child to watch over and tend to him.

The stronger one she gave away, with the exhortation to Damo to handle with care, nevertheless.

This makes sense if Satrupas decision was made purely as a mother, in the emotional tug of the moment, straight from the heart. And I would like to believe that. Give her the benefit of the doubt. Witness her pain after that first set-to with Anami.

If, however, there was an element of power play even at that sacred moment, then of course the decision would be complex... I can only guess.

Anami's interruption was just so... Timely!

By giving away Anami, Satrupa protected her - deliberately or inadvertently. Had she given away Vatsalya, probably she would have been still accused of protecting the boy at the cost of the girl from Laal Mahal ka Kaal. Satrupa had a tough call to make. Either way, she would be accused of preference for the boy.

I really wanted to hear Satrupa's answer to that question! Anami's entry moment had to be that, right?! 😆

I did not think she was about to say something more than I love them both. But now that you mention it - maybe.

The one and only explanation CVs can give so that we do not feel very bad about Satrupa is that she gave away the stronger one.

The complicated explanation could be that Vikram has a daughter too. And she was never ever considered as heir. Nor her kids. He believes only in male heirs and sons of male heirs. And that too only if they did not commit any major blunder. Satrupa was given a free hand as she gave him a heir he wanted. Maybe that is the deal he had with her while she was carrying. That could be the reason for the daughter being given away. And come to think of it - maybe Adhiraj is Baldev's sister's son. But then you cannot have the romantic angle. Adopted son maybe ?😆

I only saw the fb scene of Satrupa giving away her child and in that she had her eyes closed.
ATM, i would like to delude myslef that she didn't know whether she was giving away a son or a daughter.
She had to part with one of her babies to protect them, so she just did that.

The flashback scene showed Satrupa asking Damo to take care of her child after all she is her daughter. And when the child is given to Murari, Damo mentions had she not been a girl her fate would have been different.

All this gives us the impression that Satrupa gave away the girl child coz one of the children had to be sent away and having the boy with her meant having a heir.

Had she sent the boy and kept the girl then this battle for inheritance would have been fought long back as they might not allowed a girl child as a heir.

Hmmm...as of now I think POWER was the motivating factor ...The other woman had already given Baldev a boy ( though illegitimate but boy nevertheless) and that must have made Satrupa insecure hence she did what she did 😡

Yes that is the explanation that Guruji offered. He put the words in Satrupas mouth. She did not confirm or deny. It is possible that this is the explanation. Or then maybe not. It would be good to hear from Satrupa herself. 😃

Hi Bugsa,

Interesting post. Did not think much of that pause of an answer, but since you raised this point, will post my POV.

First and foremost we must understand Satrupa is no ordinary mother. She is a Maharani (that is how she was addressed when introducing her to Pandit and his family) and then the DIL of a royal dynasty. Now women with such titles and backgrounds are trained to think differently. Their thought process is far different from a normal mother. The roles and titles they hold come with huge responsibilities. Relationships take a backseat. May it be that of a mother, wife, daughter etc etc. Everything is secondary. Most important of all is to protect the throne and everything that comes with it.

So whatever was conspired between Guruji and Damo to give away her (Satrupa's) first born (son). How much truth was in that (it would save one of them from death?) can't be sure. Probably Guruji had some ulterior motive in that or not, we don't know.

But instead Satrupa CHOSE to give up her girl child, was probably for more than one reason. Son stays and becomes the heir apparent. Once he is 18, she could bring back her daughter. This way both get claim to their rights. Also choosing her daughter would not have given her that weightage with Vikram and the status and clout that she holds would have been non-existent. To reclaim that position back for her Son after he turns 18 would not be easy as we can see Avdoot would have been crowned before Vatsalya turned 18(Avdoot & Narr both are older than V). So choosing V over A made sense considering what could have happened if A was chosen.

But of course 17 years later she never ever thought her son would be gone and the daughter she gave up would turn out to be the exact opposite of what she hoped the girl would turn out to be (considering she grew up in a Pandit's household as calm and timid and docile). Instead Anami is an approaching Tsunami that is going to wash off all of their iniquities.
