Models do not get paid. You're talking about supermodels. Supermodels do get paid after years of walking and establishing themselves, but majority of their income does not come from walking the runway. The top most models make close to $100,000 YEARLY. That may seem like a lot to you, but its not. The millions reported on Forbes come from endorsements. Beginner and intermediate level models walk for the fame and recognition (of walking for a particular designer) and sometimes get paid a few hundred bucks. That's all.
When Karli Kloss started out, you think she got paid? Nope. She got paid in clothes.
I HIGHLY doubt Sonam is getting paid for walking the runway. Plus, Ralph and Russo are close friends of hers. It's considered a privilege to be the show stopper for the runway because everyones eyes are on the show stopper.
ETA: She doesn't get paid for Cannes. Cannes appearances are negotiated in their contracts when they sign on for the brand. They also have a budget for the clothes for such appearances and sometimes limitations as to which designer they can work with (which is why Elie Saab is the dominant designer for Cannes).
